Too bad. No one will ever know how the "dying girl's wish for a kitten" story turns out.... :D

“Gramma!” The teenager yelled, slamming the door as he ran through the house and into the kitchen.

“Slow down. What’s the hurry?”

“A five page paper due tomorrow in history… I forgot all about it.”

“Okay. Don’t panic. What’s the topic? Maybe I can help you,” his grandmother asked, handing him a brownie still warm from the oven.

“A famous person from the olden days. Way back in the 1960’s.”

“Sorry, I can’t help you there,” his grandmother, still wanted by the FBI for her activities forty years ago. “I led a boring life then. I never knew anyone famous.”

"You ever get scared, Sarge?" stammered the white faced Private, flinching as a shell whistled over the pitching landing craft as it slammed through the waves.

"Every time, son, every time," the grizzled four striper replied, checking the bolt and clip of his submachine gun. "Just remember your training and you'll be fine." With a roar of engines, the craft ground ashore and the ramp dropped.

Dug into the black sand, the platoon began exchanging fire with the defenders.

"What is this place, Sarge?" the Private hollered.

"Just another fuckin' island, kid," the Sergeant replied, "Some flyspeck called Iwo Jima."

“In a major civil rights victory, the United States Supreme Court hands down a unanimous decision in Brown versus Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. The historic decision, which brought an end to federal tolerance of racial segregation, specifically dealt with Linda Brown, a young African American girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school in Topeka, Kansas because of the color of her skin….”

“Did you catch that report? I was asleep.”

“Relax, Howard, it’s just the daily report of ‘What happened on this day in History’."

4/10 Herstory

He’d had a hell of a day. There’d been rioting and looting in town the night before, and he’d spent the day cleaning up and putting his store front back together.

Returning home, he found his daughter sitting at the kitchen table staring listlessly at the wall.

“What the hell are you doing home?”

“Did you hear what happened, Dad?”

“Yeah, I heard. They shoulda shot all those goddamn troublemakers.”

Tears welled in her eyes. “Do you realize what you’re saying? I was there.”

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

For some reason I had it without the reference. Nice.

5/10 History

“Man those sheets! Ready about!” The Commander stood helmside, braced against the heaving seas. The sails were full and firm, whitecaps blew, the spray glowed rainbows in the sunlight.

“Now! Now! Now!” he screamed, staring at the ship across his starboard bow.

The ship turned. Sails flapped, dumping wind, then snapped full and the ship surged forward.

Men scurried to make last second preparations. He shouted above the wind, “Steady on! Steady on! On…your…mark!”

The Commander white knuckled the stanchion as the ships met broadside, the sound deafening as cannons roared and wood and bone splintered.

The year was 1812.

"Leavin' tomorrow are ye'?" the old man muttered. "Bunch of dadburn foolishness. Runnin' off into the wilderness like that. There's injuns out there, boy and all sorts of wild animals. Dadburn foolishness I say."

"Don't worry, Grandpa, I'll have plenty of company," the young man laughed, "And I've been promoted to Corporal 'cause I volunteered."

"You young folks today," Grandpa said, scowling. " So restless. Never satisfied. Always lookin' to see what's over the next hill."

"We're gonna find the Northwest Passage, Grandpa," the young man replied. "Besides I trust Cap'n. Lewis and Cap'n. Clark."

I'll work on one a little later. Newbies? This is an easy way to start.

“One of these days I’m going to make it, I swear.”

She didn’t really say the words to anyone, since she was alone. It was more a promise to herself. A goal she wanted to complete this summer.

Flooring the powerful car, she tried again today. A half mile to see how fast she could go and still turn at the corner. So far she had made it at 105 top speed.

“Yeaaaa 117!! Alright!” She grinned and screamed into the wind at the numbers today, her best speed yet.

“I made history today!!! 117 !!”

She could taste freedom.

Oh, sorry. You violated the rules. You admitted it right there. You'll have to write the next three, too.

Hey, it was worth a shot. ;)

"You reckon it's gonna stop rainin' anytime soon, Walt?"

"Hard to say Fred. Lots more clouds up over the mountain, there."

'Rivers risin too, some folks already been flooded out. Lost some livestock I hear."

"Bound to stop soon. Some of the boys went upstream to look at the dam. They say it might overflow a bit."

"Did it before. Wasn't too much of a problem."

"What time you got there Fred?"

"Ten after three."

"I'm late for a meetin', see you later at the pool room."

“What’s this one for, Grampa?” The little boy pulled a ragged bit of ribbon and tarnished brass from the box on his lap.

“That one’s for being a good soldier.” The old man replied, smiling down at the four year old on his lap.

“Is that one of yours?”

“No, that one belonged to my father, your great-grandfather.”

“From the really big war, right?”

“Yes, that was World War II.”

“Is this one yours, then?” he asked, lifting another medal from the box.

“Yes, that’s mine. Vietnam.”

“Here’s a new one from daddy.”

“Grampa, what does this say?”

“Posthumously awarded.”
