Authors, groupies, trolls, alts! Listen up!

It's been suggested that this place needs to smarten up, quit the bickering and focus on the Authorly stuff again. And while I can't do much about the bickering, I thought that we could at least bicker about writing for a while.

So without further ado, here is the Author's Hangout Unofficial Q&D Erotic Flash Fiction Competition, 2008 edition.

(Before the mutterings of "who the fuck is this newbie?" drowns out all else, this is Liar's one and only alt. I did this hullabaloo once before back in -06, and needed a separate PM box for it.)

There will be deadlines, there will be guidelines, there will be rules and there will be rewards. Mostly glory and bragging rights for the winner, but probably also some kind of material thingy. I have some ideas about that and will get back to you when I know more.

But basically, here is the deal:

1. A theme is picked. By me. But I'm open for suggestions.

2. When the competition starts, I announce the theme.

3. You write a really frickin' short story based on the theme. 500 words maximum. Last time it was suggested that a minimum would be good too, so it wasn't obvious who wrote which story. So, minimum is 300 words.

4. You PM it to Quick-n-Dirty before the agreed upon deadline.

5. I collect the entries, and arrange for voting. Entries are kept anonymous.

6. We vote. Someone wins. Woo.

7. Cake and puppies for all.

Got it? Now, all I need to start this is to know that some of you will actually make the effort and, you know, write me a little something.

So can I get a Hell Yeah? Or preferrably a whole bunch. Or else, I'll go back to bitching about politics and stuff.

/Liar (in drag)

Sounds like fun, but before committing, I would ask a couple questions:

1. What is the general area of the theme? If it is something within BDSM, I wouldn't have anything to say. If it is within some genre I enjoy, that would be different.

2. What is the turnaround time? If the deadline is in, say 12 hours, I'm out. If it is a week, no problem.

Stuff like that. Thanks!......Carney

Good questions

1. I imagine it's like with the official Lit compos, like Nude Day or so. Can be anything from bdsm to romance, or both. Theme will be something general that can be applied to most Lit categories, like "life in the 50's", "a rainy day" or something like that. Choose your own genre other than that, as long as it's within regular Lit guidelines. So no kids, dogs or rape-core. Otherwise up to you.

2. Yeah, more like a week or a couple of days than a few hours. Don't wanna scare people away.

I might, depending on the topic, my work schedule, and whether my brain is working at the time--but I don't fall into any of the poll choices, so I'll just register a "perhaps," with the note that it sounds like a good idea.

Put me in Coach! I'm one of the few that keeps the FlashFic thread alive, so 500 words is like a novel to me. :D

I'll get the word out in case someone doesn't read this or thinks it's Spam. ;)

Hey, if this is gonna really be flash fiction, I think it should be even tighter. Say... 100 words? :D

Where have you been when the FlashFic thread sinks periodically into the depths, o' maid with the captivating eyes.

Erm, hiding from the idea. I really can't imagine writing a whole story with a beginning, middle and end in 100 words but I'm willing to try. :D

Dammit, can't sleep. Let's see what's goin on here.

Why such a small number? Only 500 words... sheesh
That's the whole point of flash fiction, the challenge of making something that short good.

Myeah, we could try that next. Or have several "weight classes". 20-50, 100-200, 300-500 words.

500 turned out to be a good limit last time. Didn't scare the long-writers away (but they had to work to reep it short) and the flash writers and even a poet or two joined in.

Sounds good. Trust me, it isn't that difficult. It's just a matter of whittling away the extraneous vowels, consonants, verbs, adverbs and punctuation until viola' , a FlashFic emerges. :D

I guess it would prolly be a good idea for me to work my way down. The shortest I've really done is a 1,000, maybe 750. 500 might be a good next step.

Hey, I knew somebody named Viola!

Count me among the interested as well. I think it would be a good challenge and any kind of competition I'm good to go. I'll be waiting to hear details.

I'm interested. I do the 100 word Flash Fic's so 500 should be easier. ;)

I'm in.

Suggestion for prizes: The other day, when I bought a pair of rolling writer pens, there was a third pen in the package that was approximately 2/3 the length of the full-sized pens. Wouldn't it be cool to get those sub-sized pens printed with the LIT logo, and give them out to the winners? I mean, for a flashfic contest, the prizes should be considerably smaller than normal.
