But is there any way to let a guy (who you're most likely a) tossing a salad for or b) handing fried chicken to) that you're interested?

Try coming up with a question about something besides your work. The car question earlier was good, asking how the weather (even if you can see it) is lame, but it will certainly send the message that you're interested in talking to him and not about something having to do with him being in your work place. If you show some of the self confidence you have around here you'll be fine!!
