Lubrication lubrication lubrication.
Seriously, buy one of those giant gallon size containers of a good lubricant or boxes of vaseline and an anal plug, well rather a few of them in varying sizes, start off small and work up to slightly bigger around than he is.
This of course is before he gets home and shoves it in. I know he swears to go slow and everything, but guys for some strange reason have a problem with going slow when they are inserting mr. happy.
Now when you do decide to give up that part of you to him, use the plug before he gets to shoving, and use up half of the gallon of lube or a couple things of vaseline, on him and in you.
Granted I'm overstating the amount of lube you need, but best to have a ton around and of course to add more as needed.
The lube you use is of course up to you, though I would say stay away from water based, it wears out fast and you don't really make your own back there, the oil based apparently stains. Now the silicon based works great, but can't be used with some toys. Vaseline of course makes for a great lube for anal I guess, seems to be bought for that alot anyway.

In addition to all of that advice, I'd add clitoral stimulation and allowing you to control the movements while he stays still were what made for success after tons of failure (obviously trying until you find something that works is key, too, unless anal play/sex is just not your thing - some people just don't enjoy it, period, and that's fine, as well).
On the lube, once we tried silicone, we never looked back. A good lube is just as important as lots of lube, though gobs of silicone isn't necessary because it's ultra-slick and doesn't dry out. Shop around, but if there's a better deal than this , I can't find it (let me know if you do...I'm a sucker for the best bargains!). That bottle will last you a very long time, has tons of uses and will never go bad, either.
