First Time Drinking

Did you know the legal drinking age in Maine is 21? And i hope you're not providing alcohol to that 15 year old girl.

Here the legal age for alcohol is 15.

I’m Irish, I live on the south side of Chicago, and I’m already in AA at the ripe old age of 24. I might know what I’m talking about here..

Not all Irish are drunks! I hate stereotyping. I've been to a few countries and seen its pretty much the same as here. I've never been drunk. I like to have one glass of beer or something every now and then and I know a good few people who also don't drink or drink very little.

As for a first drink, they're all icky at first! I had an alcopop thing which tasted ok at first but after a few mouthfulls was disgusting. And beer is something you get used to so its also horrible at first.

Who said all Irish are drunks? And not all first drinks are icky. I will be the last one to stimulate someone to go and drink alcohol, nor will I be the one to say you one shouldn't. Like with so many thinks it's the same with alcohol: when taken with moderation there's nothing wrong about it.

About the taste and icky-ness? Alcohol in itself does have no taste really. But alcoholic drinks like Vodka, Gin and Whiskey, for example, may be tastes you have to get used to plus they are kinda strong. I think women tend to like liqours more and they are 'easier' (if you like) to drink, especially when mixed with a fruit juice for instance. They can almost taste like a sweet softdrink where you don't even notice there's alcohol in it. And that is the big trap there, with drinks like that.

OK - I'll add my piece. After about 8 years' cohabitation with alcohol, I have this to say:

"You get what you pay for."
Hm, I would disagree, as my most favorite alcohol I ever bought, was also one of the cheapest compared to amount and strength... But then, not that easily accessible to me right now.

Anyway, more in general on this topic - I am not sure of what to think of the idea, to plan your first drink. But that might just have to do with what someone is used to. I don't remember when I drank first, probably it was a glass of champagne my dad gave me on some New Years party, anyway, either way, I had had alcohol a long time before I got drunk for the first time. My suggestion is more, to start with maybe a glass of wine or something similar with a meal, that's all - just to try out the taste, not the getting drunk. If you like the taste, getting drunk will happen at some point anyway...

Someone would have to be providing it to both of them, since he's 18.

Wow. You guys are paranoid!

Just have fun! I'm 18. I don't drink very often. I sometimes go a liiiittle overboard. My advice: if you do get carried away, there should be someone responsible and in control to take care of you if you get sick.

Ok, ok. I know this isn't the most responsible advice, but I say have fun while you're young!!!

And go leave a bar, drive, and smash in a tree. Yeah, have fun while you're young.

Um, when you are drinking, you need to be the one responsible and in control. If you need someone to take care of you, you have gone way to far! :nana:

Wouldn't mind having that for a drinking age in the US. Of course, I'd also prefer a driving age limit of 18 at that point, just to give the drinkers a chance to grow up. Having a license at 15,or 16 and a drinking age at 21 means that most drivers don't learn how to not drink and drive.

If Daniam reads these postings I hope he takes some of the advice.
an underage DUI in Vermont is an automatic loss of license to drive if you are a resident, an an automatic suspension of privilages to drive in Vermont if you are not a resident. I've had to help remove a few to many people from vehicles after drunken driving incidents.

Thank you! I am glad someone finally noticed! :nana:

Be LEGAL about it. If you're both not of legal age to drink, forget it!

Be SAFE about it. Don't even think about crackin the seal on whatever you choose to consume until you have arrived at your evening's destination. If you're planning on having something with a meal at a restaurant (cocktail, wine with dinner, appertif), then choose one of those ONLY, and neither one of you get behind the wheel until at least 30-45 minutes AFTER you've finished drinking, or have alternate transportation arrangements

You can see that many opinions exist on what the best "first drink" is. It's all about taste, and no two people are alike. Beer, wine, and hard liquor can be "fabulous" or "terrible" depending on who you talk to. If you're wanting still one more opinion, I'd say go with a mixed drink that uses a mixer that you already enjoy (screwdriver if you like orange juice, rum and coke if you like coke, bloody mary if you like tomato juice, etc). If you're at a bar when you do this, ask your cocktail waiter/waitress for a suggestion, and tip him/her generously for their suggestion! and... if this is the case, only have ONE drink in the bar (see above)

Come back and post and let us know how it goes!
