Dear authors,

First, I'm fairly new here. Second, I thought I'd try telling a story.

I'm working on my first submission and it's going to be longer than I thought.

True story's take an evolution of time, at least for me.

I don't want to do chapters, what I do want is pages.

Is there a particular format in doing so?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Sailbad

What do you mean by "I don't want to do chapters, what I do want is pages"??

The pages you see in some Lit submissions are created by the system based on the size of the posted story. It's automatic and I don't think an author has any control over it.

If you want to create a page break of some kind in your story, you can do that by skipping down a space or two, using some kind of line character that's read by txt like ~~~ and then skipping a couple more spaces. I did this on my last submission and it worked pretty well. One thing though, don't extend the line out to the end of your page, it won't wrap properly and will ruin your formatting.

You'd have to outguess the algorithm that decides where the page breaks go. Good luck! I've tried to guess where page breaks would come in my stuff, and I've never come very close. Better stick to chapters.

Ps. Instead of formal chapter headings I've used:

_______________________________________

to make a break between parts of a story.

Mathgirl mentioned the algorithm used by Lit to break the stories up. Rather than recount it from memory (as I will no doubt distort fact from reality), here's a thread that discusses the 'algorithm'.

Ye olde algorithm thread

If you can sift through the bickering, you'll find some pretty useful numbers to help you guesstimate how you might go about formating your chapters. Should you were to try it that way - might I suggest leaving a note for Laurel to help retain your desired format? She might go the extra distance to assist in the presentation of your work.

Good luck!

When I say pages, I mean the format where at the bottom of the page you see the next sequential page i.e. 1, 2, 3.

If you number your pages and the computer makes page breaks, too, I think you'll end up with a mess.

What about the preview option on the submit page? It makes your story look just as it will when posted. I've never used it for my stories that are more than one page, but I imagine that it *might* be possible to use this option, see where your pages will break and then make a couple of changes. I don't know for sure though.

I thank you for your input on how to post.

I'm pretty sure I have the gist of it.

"About Mary," was started almost a month ago. It's basically a true story. Some names and states have been changed, but that's it.

Time limitations hamper me a bit. It will take me a bit of time to finish. I'm on the sixth page of "word" and not even close. The more I write, the more I remember. I edit and edit again.

You've put in a bit of your time for me. I hope I don't dissapoint you.
