So, I decided I would like to be more creative. After researching various hobbies Poetry seems to be something I have the time for and possibly, with practice something I could get good at.

Not to mention my romantic interests would probably like it as well.
So I did a google search and got some basic info, but I feel like I need more.

Does anyone have a link or direction for me to march in?
Or is this sink or swim, jump in and find out territory?

Have you ever written a poem? If so, care to share? That would give some of us a better idea about where you are with poetry.
Oh, make sure to read lots of poems. That's certainly one way to learn more. :)

Thank you for the quick responce. No I have never written anything in my life that was not assigned by a teacher.

Wickedeve ~ I just did my first ever "Poem" in the free writing thread
WomanPariah ~ Thank you for the link.

Lots of good advice, so far.

Also, check the Welcome poets thread above — usually third thread from the top. Head to the 5th post. You'll find plenty of references to tap into and, as an addition, towards the bottom of that page a link to 300 on-line poetry journals.

You can also check on the Archival Review thread and read some of the better poetry here at Lit. Notice that few rhyme; there's more to poetry than just rhyming.

Write what you consider to be poetry. That's your start point. Read, read; write, write; practice, learn and grow. You may trip and stumble but you'll find that with persistence you will develop your own unique style.

Welcome. And don't be embarrassed about your poem in the passion thread. Everyone here writes poems, so we've all been there. You're off to a good start. Your poem has an honest feel to it, which is half the battle in my opinion.

If you really want to continue with poetry, my advice is to read a lot of it and write it every day. You'll be amazed by how fast you'll learn.

LeBroz suggested you read this thread. I agree. The forum rules are there, but also there are many links to poetry resources. And if you have any questions, just ask. There's lots of us here and we all love words and jabbering about poetry. You've definitely come to the right place.

Wow, you guys and gals are so different from any other forum I have been on. I actually feel welcome here. Many thanks again. I look forward to getting to know ya'll.

I'll add one tiny piece to the advice here so far, and my own welcome.

Don't sit down to "write poetry." Just write. Talk about everything, describe everything. Write secret letters to everyone you've ever known. Write prayers and petitions to ghosts and animals and mountains. Try every form you run across, just for grins. Get into all the challenges here and see what you can do. Try everything and fail in spectacular ways. Just make words, every day. In there, somewhere, you will find the seeds of poetry.

Good luck. And you're welcome to stop by the bistro. It's very friendly, and you can ask lots of questions. Poets LOVE to talk about the writing process. You'll get lots of new perspectives and methods and exercises.

well met,
bijou
