First Contact

As Rex was sitting from the toast and offer he felt his communicator vibrate, it was set on silent, so not to disturb the dinner. He withdrew it from a loose pocket in his Dancer dress pants. He looked at the display

Rex's joy at hearing of the promotion to Lance Corporal quickly evaporated to a saddened disapointment. He looked at Lieutentant Eiselmann with a look of true disappointment."Tell me lieutentant, while you are trying to read my mail, could you tell me, does the officers mess have an observation lounge?"

Commander Ian Cargill

Ian saw trouble brewing between his security chief and the merchant captain. Ian knew he couldn't defuse the situation (and implicitly trusting Lt. Eiselmann, Ian was going to follow his lead); but he might keep a few innocents out of the way.

"Captain Lionheart, I must commend you on your generosity to our newly promoted Lance Corporal. Mr. Townsend has set a bottle of brandy from the Windsorian System in the officer's mess. Lt. Eiselmann, if you will show Captain Lionheart the way, the rest of us will be there to join you shortly." Ian could tell that Lt. Eiselmann wanted to have a few private words with the Merchant Captain. This would give him that opportunity.

"Doctor, if you will remain here for a moment in the dining room, I shall rejoin you shortly. Corporal Janas, Petty Officer Fredrick, if you would kindly follow me to my Ready Room, please?"

John had listened to the Commanders annoucement of promotion for the private, and had felt a mix of happiness for the now Corporal Janas and a little annoyance that he hadn't at least been given a heads-up.

He truly didn't mind the Commander making the annoucement but it did change his command and he would have liked more of a heads up.

Then with the Corporal's annoucement of an after dinner celebration John had felt his mind move to the image of Janas, naked, legs open inviting him to fuck her and he struggled with it for long minutes it would take something major to move his attention away from that image now.....

John turned his face to the Captain, his face showed nothing of the anger that he felt

."Tell me lieutentant, while you are trying to read my mail, could you tell me, does the officers mess have an observation lounge?" he asked

"While I am trying to read a signal sent without station clearence with a rather complex encryption from a ships Captain who arrived unannounced carrying several items that are .....interesting, thus doing my job to protect this station , I will gladly tell you that the Officers Mess does have an Observation Lounge its also a secure part of the base that you are not cleared for yet unless the Commander wishes to allow you access to that area Captain Lionheart" then he smiled and of course the Commander did give permission, probably wisely suspecting that more words would flow

As he lead the way John was aware that this one was hiding a stackload of truths some no doubt dangerous but then John was more than he seemed more than his little badges meant.

He looked out at the space beyond and said "Oh yes and the compressors I almost forgot as I'm sure you are quite aware they can be jettisonned off your ship without compensation if a ship of any type docks lands or otherwise enters any base ,military or otherwise without prior written or otherwise transmitted request that includes base approval of the ships manifest prior to arrival and since you would not have been approved docking if you had transmitted that manifest without first jettisoning the compressors, they go ,you have 12 hours from now Captain Lionheart"

Ren looked at the Commander after being ordered to stay in the dining room, and wondered what was going to happen in the Commander's ready room.
He could smell trouble brewing...something about this Lionheat fellow had Lt. Eiselmann up in arms apparently, and after talking to the man, Ren could somewhat understand it...but there was something else going on here. He shrugged...it wasn't his concern at the moment.

"Yes, sir," The doctor replied, idly playing with his wine glass.

Commander Ian Cargill

As Commander Ian Cargill began leading the Corporal and the Petty Officer to his ready room, he decided he better make one last point with Merchant Captain Lionheart.

"Something to remember, Captain Lionheart, during your short time here. Since this little outpost is pretty much the only presence of Republican Law for twenty light years, you could say that I incorporate both the High and Low Law, so to speak. I have an amazingly wide latitude of powers, and you'd be amazed at the the literally volumes of regulations that are within my power to ignore; all I have to do is assert the interests of the Republic. And as head of the security of Starbase Tycho, Lt. Eiselmann enjoys my full and unconditional confidicence. So you may assume that not only does he speak for me, but he also enjoys the right to exercise a larger latitude of judgment than would be possible in the more populous systems of the Republic. Just something to consider, Captain Lionheart."

With that, Ian led the Corporal and the Petty Officer to the quiet of his ready room.

Lance Corporal Alexa Janas

The development that ensued her semi-official announcement was different from what she had had in mind. Obviously Rex and Lt. Eiselmann had progressed from safe-distance quarrels to the infight. From her end of the table Alexa hadn't been able to learn the reason for this escalation (and she had admittedly been too involved in the conversation with Sam) but it seemed to be something critical. She could read Lt. Eiselmann's tautness from his posture and knew that he wasn't too happy about something.

"Corporal Janas, Petty Officer Fredrick, if you would kindly follow me to my Ready Room, please?"

For the third time in minutes Alexa was utterly surprised. Things evolved really fast and really different from her first dinner at this table. She wondered what Commander Cargill wanted to tell them and so she stood up obediently and follwed the Commander to his Ready Room.

Now that they were alone Rex had to decide how he was going to handle telling the good Lieutentant the truth of why he was out here in the middle of no where. But he had not yet been authorized to do so, yet. He would give him a little to chew on, but definetly not the whole story, then Rex was not sure he had the whole story himself.
"You know Lieutenant, strangly I like you, you do a damn good job, But I have a mission, too. You are a large fish in a tiny ity bity micro world, I'm here to help you, I know you don't beleive that. But believe this Lieutenant if things happen the way some in the Republic high command think it might, 200 compressors will be laughted about from one end of the galaxy to the other, for you see Lieutentant that is the pond I swim in, the largest nastiest pond there is, open space. You were a pilot, a good one to be an ace! You may name your first born after me for the advise an about to give you , Lieutenant practice your marksmanship, get every one to practice, Remember the old Earth American Marines Sempre Fi, Sempre Fi." And with that Rex turned and headed to the observation lounge of the officers mess hall. Damn the Lance Corporal looked good...good enough to eat. Rex smiled at that thought.

Commander Ian Cargill

(OOC: I'm trying to strike a balance here of being the CO without being heavy handed in interfering with anyone's storylines. If I get out of line, please let me know!)

Ian led Lance Corporal Janas and Petty Officer Second Class Fredrick to his ready room. The ready room was a small conference room off of the Commander's office which served as both a private conference room for the Commander to hold discussions with senior officers, or as a inner sanctum of sorts. It was sparsely but tastefully decorated, with a view of the space outside."

"Corporal Janas, Petty Officer Fredrick, there are some matters that I need to discuss with Merchant Captain Lionheart and Lieutenant Eiselmann that are above your paygrade. If you two don't object, I am going to leave you two here for your after dinner drinks while I go meet the rest of my dinner guests in the officer's mess."

Ian pointed at a green switch by the door. "That is the lock to this room and, save for an emergency override, I am the only person on board who can override that lock under normal circumstances. I shall not be back until the beginning of the morning shift, eleven hours from now. Please clean up after yourselves." With that, Ian left the Corporal and the Petty Officer alone as headed to the officer's mess to join Lionheart and Eiselmann.

Before stopping at the officer's mess, though, Ian remembered he needed to have a short conversation with the doctor. Returning the dining room, Ian stood in front of the doctor.

"Doctor, as you are undoubtedly aware, personnel records can be embarrassingly complete. I have always tried to use discretion and good judgment when acting upon any information I have learned from these files. Let me say a few words, and then I shall not breach the matter again, unless you yourself bring it up. The past is the past. We learn from it, we let it guide us, but we do not let it dictate our future."

"You're going to be stationed on Starbase Tycho for awhile. We're a long way from anywhere, and that's a long time to be alone. My interpretation about the regulations concerning fraternization is that those personnel directly under you are off limits. Otherwise, feel free to strike up relationships with enlisted or officers. Just be careful with their feelings, and your own."

"Doctor, I'm afraid I'm going to have ask you not to attend after-dinner drinks in the officer's mess with myself, Lt. Eiselmann, and Merchant Captain Lionheart. I'm afraid events are going to unfold that it would best for you not to be in attendance of." With that, Ian left the Doctor in the dining room and joined Lt. Eiselmann and Merchant Captain Lionheart in the officer's mess. The three of them were alone.

"Lieutenant Eiselmann, is this a matter that I need to be in attendance of, or would you rather handle it on your own? Your call."

After Commander Cargil left the ready room, Sam looked at Cprl Janas. They smirked at one another. "I wonder what that's all about" Sam said. Sam noticed the bottle of Don Lyon that was the gift from Cpt. Lionheart on the side table. "Shall we?" he asked.

He watched Cprl Janas as she walked to the big comfortable leather sofa in the ready room as he went to get the bottle and a couple of glasses from the side table. He noticed she took off her shoes and sat in the middle of the sofa sideways with her arm on the back and her feet up under her she turned and smiled at Sam.

He opened the bottle and carried it with the glass and sat next to her, poured a couple of glasses. He set the bottle on the small table next to the sofa. He looked at Alexa and said, "A toast to CORPORAL Janas. May you live long and prosper." They both laughed at the old Star-Trk line that Mr Spok was known for.

Sam and Alexa sat and talked about the old Star-Trek shows while they sipped on their drinks. Sam was starting to feel warm and possibly a little light headed. He stood up and slipped his dress blue jacket off "May I take your jacket too?" he asked Alexa. She leaned forward and took her jacket off and handed to to Sam. When she removed her jacket, Sam couldn'thelp but notice the lace of her bra through the almost sheer white top Alexa had on. There must have been a slight draft in the room also as he could see her nipples start to stiffen. This caused Sam to start to stiffen a little also. When the Commander had come in to speak with him again, Ren found himself somewhat embarressed.

Apparently, they not only had records detailing the end of his relationship with his wife, but they had kept an ete on him since he had been here as well. He knew he hadn't exactly been friendly. Hell, he could admit it...he'd been anti-social...but he wasn't aware that high command was keeping tabs on his personal life.

It wasn't exactly as if he was against the idea of being with a woman. Actually, the idea was somewhat pleasant. He had also noticed Janas, thinking she was an attractive lady...but he doubted that he could have brought himself to go beyond only noticing. He couldn't handle the emotional aspects that usually accompanied being with a woman right now...the pain was still too fresh...still too real. The best he could handle would be a purely physical arrangement, and that wasn't something most women were particularly agreeable to, in his past experience.

He sighed, and finished his wine...apparently, the meeting was over. He got up, and headed back to the infirmary, where he was in his element.

John watched as Lionheart moved away , he senced a lot of truth in what he had been told and he knew that mostly because he had seen this chap mask truth.

Funny thing about the captain statement is that it mirrored statements made during the ages ,just as the shit was about to hit the fan as for the saying John had his own military saying he liked to recall in times like this...

Then the commander arrived "I think Sir that the captain is not here just because he has Pineapples to sell" John considered all he knew , all he had been told and all he suspected "I think our friend here believes I'll need more than that single fighter you approved for consideration"

John out at space and wondered ..."I don't trust him entirely , he's willing to use those around him to forward his own aims, but at this moment in time I don't know just what he wants .." John paused for a moment " ..I believe you should be cautous in dealing with him until we find out more about his real reasons for being here"

Ian scratched his chin as he considered what his security chief had to say.

"Lieutenant, it doesn't matter if I put in for one or one hundred fighters. We couldn't get anything out here in less than six months. And I'm very familiar with the scenarios that a number of military theorists, yourself included, subscribe to. I happen to agree. I believe it's not a matter of if we'll meet intelligent life, but when. And I don't know what the alien intelligence will be like when we meet them. Nobody does. They might be peaceful, belligerent, or somewhere in between. I for one want to be ready for any possibility."

Ian sighed. "But the fleet doesn't have the resources to fight hypotheticals. We have all our resources tied up fighting would-be dictators and insurgents on Human Worlds. I had to do some fancy talking just to get you one fighter."

"Lt. Eiselmann, Starbase Tycho is not a perimeter fort. We're a trading post on the frontier of the Republic. We're here to provide a platform for scientific observations and experiments, and to act as a supply depot for those survey ships mapping the space beyond the borders of the Terran Republic. For the present, all the action is going on inside the Republic, not out there." Ian made a gesture toward the view outside.

"I've been thinking about Captain Lionheart, and from your suspicions, I can only come up with one of two conclusions. Either he is a scoundrel and a rogue, and his cargo is destined to end up in the hands of internal enemies of the Republic. Why he would come out here, though? We're almost a year's round trip from the nearest system."

"Perhaps he does represent some faction within the defense ministry that feels Humanity's first contact with an alien race is imminent, and that this Starbase is going to be where it happens. If that were true, Lieutenant, they wouldn't have sent a disreputable Merchant Captain with a ship full of questionable cargo out here to handle the matter."

Ian scowled as he continued. "Do you know why I'm in charge of Starbase Tycho, Lieutenant. Because of my qualifications. Half the station is scientific personnel. As a physicist, I can identify and relate to them. I'm also an engineer by training. Anything that needs to be replaced will take almost half a year to reach us. I know how to make due, to make patch repairs, not only for us, but for the fleet survey ships that pass through here. And I'm an administrator. I know how to keep things flowing in a non-combat area. If this were about to become the first point of contact with an alien race, I wouldn't be here. I don't take that as negative reflection on my abilities. But I am aware of what my talents are and are not."

"And I have to tell you, Lieutenant, one of my talents is spotting bullshit. And that is exactly what our Captain Lionheart is a purveyor of: 100%, unmitigaged farm grade bullshit. I am not sure exactly what his game is, but I do know that if he is indeed representing some faction of the Defense Ministry, which I doubt, he is pursuing a policy that runs contrary to that of the duly elected government of the Republic. But whatever his game is, I think we need to put him on ice until we get more than cryptic answers."

Ian punched a communication console in the wall.

"DOCKING BAY!!"

"Here, sir!"

"Secure the Merchant Ship. If that ship so much as blinks an LED, send an electromagnetic pulse through it and fry every memory circuit it has."

"Aye, sir."

"Lt. Eiselmann, I want Captain Lionheart in the brig. Give him a thorough search before putting him in there. And when I mean thorough, I want him walking bow-legged for a week. And then let him stew. Nobody says anything to him for four hours. Anything you want spaced in his ship, it's spaced. If he squawks, quotes regulations, anything, advise him that I am working under Republican Emergency Order 3002-A concerning counterinsurgency efforts. As of this moment, Captain Lionheart will be considered a member or a sympathesizer of an insurgency group working actively against the interests of the Republic and, as such, has no rights nor any appeals in the eyes of the Republic."

John smiled to himself "Sir " was all he said , infact he agreed with virtually everything the commander had said , the only reservation he had over the orders was that Lionheart might very well become less likely to reveal the true reasons for his arrival....and ....what if that last little speech of his had been right.

Still he would be more comfortable with the Captain in the brig and not wandering around.

John moved to the comminications console hmself.

"Cancel Captain Rex Lionheart's security pass, get Ramsey, Chang and Henare to meet me in the ob lounge in the officers deck" John looked at the commander and drew out his sidearm....he believed that Loinheart would not put up a struggle and also believed that even if he did , he would be capable of subduing him but it was always better to have too many personnel then not enough....lord knew he'd had not enough too many times.

Getting to the observation lounge he saw Lionheart and as he entered the three other security personnel entered "Captain Lionheart you are under arrest as per the Commanders orders" his weapon pointed at the mans head as Ramsey and Chang moved to cuff him while Henare provided additional cover

Rex looked at the security officers and the Lieutenant."Ok, you caught me...the Don was only 250 a bottle not 500 credits." No one here laughs at my jokes here. Off to the brig again, Rex smirked. Is this the twentith or twentyfisrt time. Well I hope it was not as bad as Eagle, those racist scum rape everyone. "Don't bother with the Triorizene Lieutenant I'm imune, and while you are dragging me to the brig and ransacking my ship, yes I know, you have orders." Rex let ot a sigh, and thought'once more in to the breach,good men,once more into the breach'.
Rex knew they would stripped and searched that was SOP,nothing new threre. Rex wondered would his target get here while he was in the brig and if so would he open the gateway, if he did, I'll be far safer in the brig, saddly if Zebra eleven was right it would not matter, this trip will be a wash. It doesn't matter now, cover or not. They found a way of turning the cavalry into Icabar Crain, for without my ship I am truly headless one. Time to exercise the mind this could be a long spell. Rex rose up and placed his left foot flat a against the brig wall, his restraints had been removed after the search and he was naked in his cell, he thrusted his hand outward as far as they would go and opened his palms. Took a deep breath and held it, closed his eyes and start his chant he had learned as a child and as he did he slowly brought the flats of his palms together, and rested. Sam shifted his position on the sofa. He pulled one leg up and sat sideways with his arm on the back of the sofa, his foot resting against his other leg. This position had two purposes, one so he could look at Alexa without having to tun his head, and two it helped hide the small bulge in his pants that had formed with him thinking about what he'd like to do to her.

John looked at the captains ship , intently , those compressors and CEM's had to go, However the CEM's should never have bene in the Captains procession in the first place ....unless.....unless that last little speech of his had been almost as truthful as John suspected it to be, but even if that could expect how he had the modules in his procession it didn't explain why.

Unless of course it was simply a cover for the real purpose behind this trip out here which would tie in with the little speech.

But why all the other bullshit? If John was in the good Captains shoes he would have found a more plausible reason for being here and been a hell of a lot less showy.....and most likely not in the brig.

The stations ship tech came over "Its clean now has an interesting ICP but we loaded the Federation over-ride codes and its all good to go, navigational bouys on board as well" the young man looked from John to the ship then back again.

"Its looks pretty a standard right but not so this little baby was designed to kick arse..there's enough weaponary on this baby to class her as a mini Battle Frigate....he's set up to give any pirates a severe and final surprise"

"Don't think he's too worried about pirates" John replied

"Yeah.......well the keys are in the ignition so to speak, have a nice flight sir"

A few minutes later the outer docking doors opened and John took the ship out.

A light minute later he brought the drive down to a crusing speed.....the compressors had been placed very carefully into a single pod....this was the tricky bit.......

If all was good then the navigational bouys would warn shipping...not that there was any but no ships captain wanted to travel thru what was effectively a minefield...even if that minefield was temporary...if it went badly well he hoped this ship had some quick legs.

The pod opened and the compressors poured out as John moved the ship forward.....an explosion expected......
