Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me.

Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me.

Leave the men where they lay
They'll never see another day
Lost my soul, lost my dream
You can't take the sky from me.

I feel the black reaching out
I hear its song without a doubt
I still hear and I still see
That you can't take the sky from me.

Lost my love, lost my land
Lost the last place I could stand
There's no place I can be
Since I've found Serenity

And you can't take the sky from me.

So, my idea for this RP is the offspring of the characters from the show and movie embark on their own adventures. In some of the Firefly graphic novels, it is shown that Wash impregnated Zoe before he died, and while the child is a daughter, I am changing it to a son for this story -- the boy that grows up to be the character that I will play -- Kylar Washburne.

I would like people to play the offspring of Malcolm Reynolds/Inara Serra, Simon Tam/Kaylee Frye, River Tam/???, Jayne Cobb/???, or make custom characters. I'm thinking we place the story 25 or 30 years after the movie, somewhere between 2543 and 2548. In that time, there was another civil war after tensions built up over the Miranda incident. People began to protest and speak out against the Parliament, and the situation grew gradually worse over the years before war broke out again in 2522. This time, more people supported Independence, leveling the playing field, but also making the war long and drawn out.

There was all-out war from 2522 until 2529, until a cease-fire was issued and both sides signed the Treaty of Persephone, which split the system in two and made Persephone the capital of the new "Republic of Independent Worlds." Each planet in the Republic would send an ambassador to Persephone to sit on the Security Council to discuss and pass certain System Laws, but outside of those laws each planet had its own government.

Seven years later, in 2536, the Anglo-Sino Alliance unleashed an army of new cyborg warriors to try and conquer the whole system once again. Kylar Washburne was seventeen at the time and received his mother's permission to enlist in the Republic Army. He eventually found himself among the ranks of the Special Forces Unit, nicknamed "Browncoats," becoming a Sergeant like his Uncle Mal.

In 2541, after five long years of war, the Republic was on the verge of defeat, but a team of engineers managed to reprogram the cyborgs to attack their creators, and by 2543 the Alliance had been utterly destroyed. The Republic maintained Persephone as its capital, and the former-Alliance planets elected ambassadors to sit on the Council.

After three civil wars, the Verse finally had a prolonged period of peace. Sure, there were Alliance remnant groups that attacked periodically and crime was still rampant in certain areas, but the system avoided large scale wars for quite some time.

After returning home to Persephone after the war, Kylar took a job at a junkyard and was overjoyed when he discovered an old Firefly-class transport ship that was barely in one piece -- the only other Firefly he had ever seen was the Serenity, the ship he was born on, but it had been destroyed years ago when he was still a young boy.

After scraping up enough money to buy the ship and rent a garage, Kylar and his mother Zoe spent many months rebuilding the vessel to working condition. Unfortunately, she never lived to see it fly -- she took ill and passed away.

At the start of the RP, I'm thinking all our characters come together for Zoe's funeral and then Kylar convinces them to join his crew or something. The setup of the ship would be very similar to Serenity, though I'm thinking they name this ship Warlock, which was Kylar's nickname in the war, due to his seemingly magical ability to not die when his team thought for sure he was a goner.

So, anyone interested?

Here is the map for Warlock; just like Serenity.

Name: Alexa "Wash" Tam
Age: December 7, 2521
Occupation: pilot
Home planet: Persephone
Parents: Simon Tam and Kaylee Frye
Nicknamed after Hoban "Wash" Washburne
Bio: like Kylar, Wash was born on Serenity, before it blew. When her parents retired, they made their home on Persephone, the planet where her parents met. At an early age, she was an accomplished pilot, earning her nickname of Wash from Zoe herself. She liked to be near her uncle Jayne, who taught her the less honorable life. At fifteen, when war broke out, she enrolled into the same flight school as her namesake, and was the top of her class. After the war was over, she had served on three ships as their pilot and made her mark on history. She enjoys guns preferring marksmanship over hand to hand, and she is not above to using a weapon when necessary, whether it be gun or knife, most of which were gifted to her by Jayne.
Appearance: petite, black hair, blue eyes, pale skin, toned. Usually clad in a flight suit.

Kylar Washburne

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o178/TheJeffinator/jesse-williams_zpsd0ceca3b.jpg

Born: March 22nd, 2519
Homeworld: None, born Vesselside (aboard Serenity)
Occupation: Soldier (former), engineer, smuggler/mercenary

Biography

A few weeks after Hoban Washburne died on Mr. Universe's moon, River Tam happily informed Zoe that she was pregnant with Wash's son, having sensed the young mind growing. The boy was born aboard Serenity and Kylar's earliest memories were running around the ship playing with River and Kaylee and, eventually, Kaylee's daughter Alexa. As the other kids were born to the crew, they formed a close-knit group of friends and gathered each morning for lessons in math, science, history, and language arts from "Professor River," as they called her.

By the time River had started teaching the kids, she had improved considerably from her former days of mental anguish. She still had occasional episodes and required daily injections of multiple medications, but for the most part remained lucid and stable.

During the second civil war, the Serenity mostly stayed out of the fight for the sake of the children. Haven -- the former home of Shepherd Derrial Book -- became one of the major hubs for refugees and supporters of Independence. Most of the jobs Serenity took during this time was transport of supplies to the Browncoats or refugees to a safe zone. However, in the final days of the war -- when Kylar was ten years old -- the kids were left behind with River, Kaylee, and Inara on Haven. Mal, Zoe, Jayne, and Simon took up a highly dangerous mission to deliver emergency medical supplies to a military unit deep in the war zone, a move which helped earn them a victory but also saw Serenity shot out of the sky.

The crew survived the destruction of the ship and were hailed as war heroes in the new "Republic of Independent Worlds." Soon the whole gang gathered together on Persephone, their new capital. From there, each followed their chosen paths in life in the absence of Serenity. The Republic Security Council built a new military academy and appointed Zoe as the Commandant and chief instructor, thus making Kylar's teenage years rather stress-free thanks to his mother's new-found wealth.

Things changed when Kylar was seventeen and war broke out again. He received his mother's permission to enlist in the Republic Army, spent three months training at the Academy, and then shipped out as a Private. Within the first two years of the war, he had earned himself a place among the elite special forces group known as the "Browncoats," also making it to the rank of Corporal.

Five years into the war, when Kylar was twenty-two, he earned the rank of Sergeant and commanded his own four-man team. They piloted many covert missions in the following two years, until the war finally ended and the Alliance suffered a major defeat.

After seven long years of war, Kylar returned to Persephone and took a much-needed vacation. After a few months of relaxation and enjoying his twenty-fifth birthday, he took a job at a junkyard and discovered an old beat up Firefly-class transport ship. He was delighted when his mother bought it for him as a birthday gift and rented a garage, where they spent the next year fixing it up. They named the ship "Warlock," a nickname Kylar had earned from his team in the war.

In early 2545, Zoe caught the very rare "Phantom Fever," and died shortly after Kylar's twenty-sixth birthday. He loaded up Warlock to take his mom to Mr. Universe's Moon so she could be buried next to her husband. He sent out a message to the extended family from the old Serenity crew and asked if they wanted to accompany him to lay Zoe to rest.

Okay, so we have the son of Wash and Zoe, the daughter of Simon and Kaylee, and there should be a profile coming soon for an apprentice of Inara. If no one else joins, I am considering making a second guy and having him possibly be the son of Mal and Inara. Also, if we could include images for all characters for better visualization, that would be good :).

Bump!

Really hope you get good writers for this thread, Jeff. I studied some Whedon through college and have always been an avid fan. Needless to say, I'm very excited to see this thread progress. It'll be interesting to see if it brings any fellow Browncoats out of the woodwork.

Good luck!

Thanks! Other than Kylar and Alexa/Wash, I have received PMs with requests to play a companion who is mentored by Inara and a son of Jayne. So we'll see if they post their character bios here or not. What about you, Serpy? You want to play? Oh, and I always shorten usernames and give nicknames, lol.

Jeff... You don't know how tempting an offer that is!

The last communal thread I was in was great, we had some fantastic writers, but sadly a lot of them kind of petered out. Same with the threads I did one-on-one, so I kind of quit roleplaying all together. Now I just read and at the moment there's very few threads I bother reading at all as the standards of quality are just, well, let's just say I have very high standards.

But trust me, I will be following yours closely, can't wait to see your other writers that you've got lined up.

I just finished re-watching Firefly for about the fortieth time this week :) I keep buying the box set and giving it away. Did the same thing with my copy of 'World War Z', must have bought that book about fifteen times or more... Damn my soft heart!

Yeah, I understand that. Half of my writers for my Young Justice RP vanished too. This has been the fate of almost all my RPs -- people always drift off and due to my constantly shifting attention, if an RP is isn't moving along fast enough for a few weeks, I tend to lose interest and move on to a new idea or reinvent old ideas.

hmmm I'm interested in this as well and would love to read the thread as it progresses. Good Luck!!!

I PMed Reina with my disapproval of the union of River and the Operative, saying it is an unrealistic turn of events for the characters and setting, but what do you guys think? If I allow it, I have to edit the backstory to remove references of River teaching the kids. What is everyone's opinion?

Mind if I join?

Hey. I'm a friend of celestialdragon's. She told me about this and said you could use some more players. Super interested! Just wanted to make sure I was welcome aboard first...since I just registered today... Lol.

Sure! Male or female?

Male. Got an OC & backstory ready as well. Of course, if you want to change a few things to fit the story better, that's fine. I think everything's within your continuity, but I could be wrong. I'll post it in a reply quick...

Name: Jesse “The Wolf” Connors
Age: 18
Appearance:
5’ 9”, 155 lbs, blue eyes, shoulder-length black hair (sometimes, but not usually, in a ponytail), non-bulky athletic build. Usually wears blue jeans, a black t-shirt, and a grey camouflage jacket.
Description:
Bastard son of Jayne Cobb. Grew up with his mom, Tessa Connors, on (either richer part of a poor planet or poorer part of a rich planet that rebelled after Miranda incident) and had a close relationship with her. As a child, dreamed of joining the war, but it ended before he could join. At the age of 15, joined an underground mixed-martial-arts cage-fighting club and eventually made a name for himself in it as “The Wolf,” or “Wolf” as people referred to him directly. At age 17, dropped out of school and began dealing and smuggling drugs and weapons while still fighting on the side whenever he could. Nine months after he started, his mother was diagnosed with (insert name of made-up terminal illness), and he left his cohorts in crime to return home and take care of her. After her death, two weeks after his eighteenth birthday, he returned to the fighting arena full-time to vent his grief and frustration. After five months, left on a journey to find his father. After eventually finding him (and exchanging a few punches), goes along with Jayne and accompanies him at Zoey’s funeral. Very competitive and a great gaming tactician. Will never back down from a challenge, and takes losing very close to heart. Owns an assortment of guns and knives and is always packing one or two weapons up his sleeve, but prefers to fight hand-to-hand. Can be cool and calculating during a fight, but still tends to act recklessly, making bold, risky moves. Cracks cheesy and sarcastic jokes regularly (Like ALL Joss Whedon characters, am I right?), but still acts angry and moody. He refuses to admit it, but after a few weeks of being in the company of the new crew, he eventually sees them as the extended family he never got to know. In his spare time, is always training, cleaning his weapons, playing games, or abusing alcohol and/or marijuana. Substance addiction developed shortly after he joined the gang, and after his mother’s death has been trying to slowly wean himself off it. Lives by his own moral code. Developed excellent cooking skills from growing up with his mother.

Awesome characters, guys, but I am a bit curious why Joseph was born on an Alliance world in the same year the second Civil War broke out, lol. Also, since I'm assuming Inara is his mother and I have already received a PM a while back for a character that is her apprentice, I told her to PM you so you guys can make sure you're on the right page with your back-stories or whatever.

Also, I'm assuming Joseph is a medical prodigy since he was still a young child when he attended medical school? Kylar was ten years old when the second war ended, and seventeen when the third one began. He was twenty-five around the time the third war ended, and at the start of this RP, he is twenty-seven. He was born in 2519, which means Joseph is three years younger than Kylar and is thus around twenty-four years of age, which means he was about seven years old when the second war ended and fourteen when the third war began. Which means Joseph was a preteen advanced medical student.

Thank you Jeff for allowing my odd little character.

Name: Mike, short for Mikaela
Born: September 22, 2527
Homeworld: None

Mike comes across as very gentle, reserved, shy and quiet. She has a subtle accent that becomes more clipped and pronounced when she gets upset or excited. She moves with a fluid grace that disguises impressive speed and precision, but fails to hide the fact that she is a little jumpy. She arrives at the funeral uninvited, introduces herself as an old friend of Kylar's, from the war, and is all too happy to let the past stay undiscussed.

Once she relaxes a bit around the rest of the crew she is a willingly helpful jack of all trades, knowledgable in a surprising number of areas from the galley to the engine room to knowing her way around a number of places in the 'Verse, though sometimes she is more comfortable offering information for the others to follow up on than going back to places herself. After a while on the ship, it isn't difficult to learn that she's comfortable around guns and a competent hand to hand fighter - happy to spar with and learn from the more experienced fighters on the ship. She is a masterful knife fighter and practices her particular form religiously, but doesn't invite violence or seem to revel in it.

She will almost never be seen to disagree with Kylar, and never in public.

My character has someone to spar with? ...SWEEEEEET!!

As far as characters, how much longer do you think before this thing gets started? Do we need anymore people?

I PMed the girl who is playing Inara's apprentice, but she hasn't replied yet. Regardless, I think we have enough to get rolling so I am going to work on the intro post in the morning when I get home from work.
