Hey all, I'm an old short-term poster and lurker, coming back for a little advice. This community is downright awesome for anything you need.

So here I am, looking for help again. :D:eek:

I've been dating an amazing woman for some months now, it's been the best relationship of my life, we're absolutely in love. I have a nice tax refund coming and would like to buy a ring for her, something kind of like a promise ring. I just have no clue how to figure her ring size. People have recommended snagging a ring to measure, but she only has a couple and she always wears them. She's also been steadily losing a decent amount of weight, which could affect ring size, especially since I don't plan to buy it for another month or so, I'm just starting to browse and get ideas now.

Anyone have a clever idea or method? Or is my best option to just ballpark it and resize after I give it to her?

Could you go shopping together, have something catch your eye in a jewelry store, and just try a bunch of things on "for fun" to throw her off track?

In addition to getting her ring size, you're likely to get a better idea of what she likes.

With the cost of everything increasing, it could be expensive to buy the wrong size.

You could also go try on silver jewelry, including rings, or something else that's completely unlike what you're going to buy her, and casually ask/note her size (or call ahead and have the salespeople working be sure to ask her for you, then tell you when she's looking away or you call later).

Make sure wherever you buy has a good return policy if you're planning on surprising her. Personally, I don't like to be completely surprised with jewelry at all. I'd much rather pick a few things out and have him make the final decision or decide together so I get something I really love. Hubby bought me some earrings I didn't love one year and I had to figure out a way to delicately tell him I wanted to exchange them for something else. It was a very uncomfortable situation. :( Thankfully, he took me shopping for all of my rings, and just the fact that he wanted to buy me a promise ring was surprise enough (I still love it so much that I'm still wearing it!). :)

if she takes off her rings when she showers that's your best bet. using a piece of paper while she sleeps is definitely more dicey. I don't think she'll be upset if you ballpark it. find a friend about her size and use her ring size if all else fails.

Try one of her rings on one of your fingers, then when you're at the jewellery store which ever ring fits on that finger is the size. Most stuff can be resized anyway but be sure to ask.

Wait until she takes her rings off for a dirty household task or something, then borrow one. You'll only need a day or just an hour or two of her worrying about where it's gone to go to a store and size it. Then you can 'find' it for her.

Or enlist a female relative or good friend of hers to go sleuthing for you. It'll be much more natural if a girlfriend ducks into a jewellery store to try random stuff on.

I'm not sure about promise ring etiquette. Do you wear a promise ring on a particular finger? If you don't know which finger she will wear the ring on you have a minor problem since fingers are not all the same size.
