I'm busy installing Chrome and Comodo security. Once that's done, I will customise all the other bits and install my tv receiver and antenna.
It's all pretty and white :D
Tomorrow I have to take it to my tech guys, along with my old one, and get them to transfer all the pictures etc that are trapped inside.

I have just tried to put a pic up, but because of lits stupid size rule, I have to go through multiple steps to resize every pic
At step 3 I accidentally deleted the pic.
Twice.
God, it shits me!

Psst...download a program called IrfanView simple resizing.

http://www.irfanview.com/ - Don't forget to download all the plugins, it's a separate download option.

Just resized this pic...easy as pie. :D

Yeah, I got that too. On my computer, not on my tablet.
I really need an easy photo editor for my tablet.

I just managed to install my tv interface and set it all up by my ownsome :D I am really proud of me, because I usually fuck it up badly somewhere when I'm trying to install 3rd party software

For like $6 you can get a USB adapter for your old hard drive and just transfer your stuff like it's a big thumb drive. Not sure if you pay your tech guys or not....

I had a thread about this.... and I've done some reading/research....
But for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to do this, or what the things are called that I need to be looking for. Also, do I have to pull the hard drive out of the old laptop? Coz if I have to do that, then I'm stuffed - the tech I spoke to about getting a 'case' had no idea what I meant

Here it is for $7.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812311004

Yes you'd have to remove the old hard drive. Unscrew the hatch and pop it out.

Is there a common name for that? And I guess the big thing is what attaches to the hard drive?
And will it attach directly, or do I need to get the case thingy (the case thing is the bit that makes people go blank when I'm asking about it at the tech store)?

Your hard drive has a SATA connection for data and a power cable. You just plug the adapter into both (the adapter will also plug into the wall). You're then left with a USB connection which you just plug into your new computer and it will immediately recognize it as just another hard drive in your computer. You can then navigate it just like a flash drive or whatever.

They make really huge flash drives now, cheap...

Wont help if her old laptop is broken. (not sure if it is or not).

As my days in computer consulting for banks and financials, I was always appalled at the lax indifference (outside of core, essential data) to the need for continual backup.

A flashdrive, or external hard-drive with a routine back-up plan is always a good idea.

Always.

My computer is not dead - my screen is. So I can turn it on but because I can't see anything, I can't do anything.
And I am pretty sure I can't connect the whole thing to my new computer as it is (whole). Apparently you need some pretty funky equipment and software to do that.

If what you say above is that easy, and all I need is that cable, then that might be a solution for me.

And for the record, I do a full backup every 12 weeks normally. In fact, I was powering up the old laptop to do just that when the screen failed catastrophically.

Have you tried plugging a monitor into it?

There are several ways for you to retrieve data from the hard drive in you old laptop.

1. You can use a double male USB cable that will let you transfer data between computers.

2. You can transfer the data via your local area network.

3. The simplest is to by a flash drive. they now have 32gb flash fairly cheap. Even a 4 or an 8 gb drive will work. Copy the stuff you want onto the flash drive and then copy it to your new laptop.

You can read about how this is done here.

I went to a different tech today, and he was just brilliant!
Took apart the old laptop to get the hd out, put it into a hd mount, transferred all my files and then reformatted the old hd to make it an external storage. And all for $30.
I am a happy chicken :D

Yep, there is that option too.

The best bit.... He took the time to show me exactly how he did it, from opening the old laptop to putting the connections together for the hd, everything!
So now I know how to do it if I ever need to :)
Oh, and I now have 320G external storage extra to use. Yay!

You sure he didn't make a second copy of your porn stash for himself when you weren't looking?

That's why I've learmed to do stuff like that on my own.

All my porn is on flashdrives.
I have techie teens in the house! Several times now, my eldest has managed to get into what I thought were password protected files
My flashdrives are stored in a wooden box where I keep my toys. When you open the lid of the box, you see several packs of feminine hygiene products - no way in hell would my boys look any further ;) These are teens who refuse to touch my underwear if I ask them to fold the laundry out of the dryer

So the old laptop didn't work at all? If it still worked I would have kept it around as a back-up or it would have become a file server on my LAN.

The laptop worked fine. It was the screen that was dead, and the cost to repair was close to what I paid for my new one so it wasn't worth it.
I've got the hd, so basically I still have my computer anyway. I've just finished taking all the stuff off and reformatting it, so now I have a 320G external storage :)

Edited to say: I meant to say I took all the stuff off my old 80G external. Silly me
So now I have a total of 400G external storage on top of the 500 hd in my new laptop,
