Isn't this insane? Those symphony crowds are getting pretty rough these days. My favorite quote is the last line. :D

Fight Erupts During Boston Pops Concert

A fight broke out at a season opener in Boston, but it wasn't the Bruins — it was the Boston Pops.

(CBS/AP) Concert-goers and even Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart were caught off-guard when a fight broke out on opening night at the usually sedate Symphony Hall in Boston, Mass.

Video of the fight on Wednesday night showed two men struggling in the balcony — one with his shirt pulled off — as several people stood around them.

CBS Station WBZ correspondent Joyce Kulhawik said one man objected to another man's talking. "A woman screamed, then suddenly it came to fisticuffs."

Witnesses said they heard a scream from the balcony, and the sound of chairs falling, then a second scream as the fight escalated.

At that point, Lockhart halted the performance while police intervened.

Boston police spokesman David Estrada said police officers on security detail at the hall escorted the men off the property, and no charges were filed. No injuries were reported, he said.

"It was an unfortunate incident, but thankfully this kind of behavior is truly out of the ordinary at a Boston Pops concert," the orchestra said in a statement. It referred calls to the Boston police department.

The performance launched the 122nd season of the Boston Pops.

The fight broke out during a medley of tunes from the movie musical "Gigi." Kulhawik noted, dryly, "It has that effect on some people."
I can only suppose the guy was flicking his lighter and shouting "FREEBIRD!!!" and someone took offense.

But imagining the Boston Pops DOING "Freebird".............. :D :D :D

I would have felt like punching someone if I had to listen to a Gigi medley.

Actually the whole thing was a terrible misunderstanding. This guy jumps up and screams, "It's supposed to be in France. right? Where are all the French horns?" One thing led to another and it got out of control.

We're there enough memorable (or otherwise) songs in "Gigi" to do a medley?

I can't even recall how the title song went. ;)

I do. Now that you mention it. :(

I dunno, it seems like a step back to the golden age of theatre, when people lived entire lives out in the stalls during the performances...

I know this is a light-hearted thread, but how scary is it that the younger man simply asked the guy to please be quiet (which you are supposed to be or you can be tossed), and the guy responded by swinging on him. The young man and his girlfriend wound up being tossed afterwards as well. With any luck, he'll be able to sue the idiot (since the police didn't bother to arrest him for assault and battery, even with hundreds of witnesses & video). How scary is our society getting?

what bothers me about things like this is LACK OF RESPECT. if you go read the cnn web page and see the stories lately, this isnt the only thing that has me wondering if evolution is turning on its backside.
for example, kids breaking teachers necks because of ipods being confiscated... *sigh*
civility seems to have gone by the wayside. its very disturbing for me to see just how much we dont care about or for the people we used to revere (sp, too tired to look it up) very disturbing that a brawl breaks out in a place thought of as upper crust(ish).

We just had a very infamous problem with a drunk cop (off duty) beating the hell out of a very small woman bartender because she told him she couldn't serve him anymore. The guy was huge and it's a miracle he didn't kill her. The whole thing was caught on security camera and was on YouTube, MSNBC, & Fox. I refused to watch it because I didn't think I could stomach it.

There was also the reporter who was severely beaten by a scumbag he was doing an expose on. The guy didn't care that it was broad daylight, or that a cameraman was standing right there, recording it, he just tried to take the reporter's head off (even biting him during the melee). Then he immediately claimed that the reporter had been harassing him and it pushed him over the edge...he just couldn't be held responsible for "snapping". His psycho wife got in more trouble than he did because she used her water bottle as a weapon. There needs to be a serious change in laws to get these people out of society (or at least make them think a little before they bully people). They can take an extra 1% out of my paycheck if it'll pay for a special jail that only houses these morons who think violence is a perfectly acceptable response.

I've seen both of those incidents on the news. its disturbing to say the least...

what about the little kids who are beating up homeless people? the kids are so damn young 10 and up. where do they learn this shit? who teaches them to disrepect human life like this? i don't understand treating anyone like this. its not just a freak incident either. things like this are happening everywhere now.

who is teaching our children compassion and respect, if not us? who is teaching them that its ok to be violent? im not down with any of this and find it increasingly easy to distance myself from it all.

In a society dedicated to getting its own way all the time, such behaviour isn't much of a surprise.
