Don't worry, participation in this thread does not require getting your teeth knocked out by Edward Norton. It's just a spot to talk about MMA stuff - so I can stop hijacking other threads. any other fight related rambling is welcome, too.

I don't think it will be a big thread but oh well.

So, to answer your question, Mister Sir, "Is Silva the baddest man in the UFC?"

Fuck yeah.

My question is, who will/can beat him???

If he ever decided to move up to heavyweight, Fedor could beat him. Aside from that, nobody. When he retires, it will be a sad day for the spot but a glorious day for the other middleweights.

True, true. He is a joy to watch, so fluid. I love watching the competitors just before the fight, they're body language says so much. Silva always looks freakishly calm.

I kind of figured he'd wipe the floor with Griffin.

What about BJ Penn? Any word on his match?

Spoilers for the spoiler-averse: Penn and KenFlo went to the fourth round before BJ tapped him out with a rear naked choke. Good match, I really thought Kenny was in with a shot considering how strong his first round was.

Oh man, can't wait to see it! Penn was so disappointing in his last showing, (well, he was just too freaking heavy), glad to hear he's back in form.

UFC sucks, they only allow the Americanized.

Emelianenko is at the top of the food chain.

I've never watched a Silva match. I should probably hit Youtube...

I like to watch the women beat the shit out of each other. I like the men too but it just hasn't been on tv much lately or I didn't know about it. Well, fuck, I don't get showtime anymore.

You should. You really should.

Sometimes his fights start out kind of slow. He backs away, very D. But he's just setting the other guy up, making him make a move, allowing himself the opportunity to strike. And when he strikes...wham! Not a millisecond of hesitation. It's fucking poetry.

I was asked by some one once if I had met the people I was with in fight club.

I thought she was talking about some sort of wrestling thing....I had no idea she ment in the bdsm scene.

Sorry this just reminded me of that.

Anderson Silva, or Wanderlei Silva? I'm going to assume Anderson, as he's the one moving around weight classes.

I couldn't find any actual fight vids on youtube (probably banned for copyright reasons), but saw a lot of clips. His knees and other trapping range work is just fucking brutal. Wow. The guy's brilliant with those knees. I never could get the hips moving fast enough to really be comfortable doing kneework like that, so it is doubly impressive. His handwork is tight as hell too. I didn't get to see enough of his groundfighting to get an impression, but what I saw looked competent.

UFC is a bit more striker friendly than it used to be. Timed rounds do that.

Absolutely Anderson. I like the Axe Murderer well enough, but he's on the downturn of his career now.

Yeah, they needed the timed rounds, I think.

I knew you'd like Silva, wait until you see a full match!

You know who I don't like? Rampage Jackson. That man bugs the shit out of me for some reason.

One of the women I worked with was a world champion kick boxer for years. She then moved into MMA and I think she would have rocked but was diagnosed with Crohns disease and that kind of ended that. She was built like a brick shit house, which was great for kickboxing but really held her back in stunts.

Her whole family does martial arts, her brother is one of the biggest, scariest men I know.

He's a cocky bastard, isn't he? I actually think that's a good thing for the sport, there need to be more genuine heels like Lesnar.

Please. Fedor's head and shoulders above everyone else, but his competition is so underwhelming it's untrue.

I disagree. Him not being overwhelmed is no commentary on his completion.

He's an Olympic champ and belt defender for how many years now? Plus he was in pride which eat UFC for breakfast.

I can imagine it would be impressive.

As to timed rounds, I'm still conflicted on the topic. It provides for more fiery action, sure, as the fighters can burst hard for a coupla minutes and then rest safe for a few. BUT it also allows for the sort of game theory crap that allows for bad fighting decisions. While I had my complaints about the original UFC matches, I'm not really sure I like timed rounds either.

To an extent, I'd like a mid-ground. Competitive Sombo has a fantastic idea. If the competitors are judged to be too "passive" by the ring judge, or a sideline judge, they can be stopped, and restarted standing. That bullshit Gracie pulled in staying int he guard for 12 minutes straight would not fly, as it was passive as hell, and dull. *

Still, rounds make for better entertainment, and that is kind of the point.

* - I've been tied up in the guard like that. It was interminable, frustrating, exhausting, and boring as shit. The reason it was allowed to happen was that the whole point was exhaustion training. It started with 100 thai kicks to the heavy bag, then 100 full power crosses, then 100 crunches, and 50 push-ups. Some time during the push-ups (near the end of course), your partner attacks from above.

It SUCKED.

Not only are you flippin tired, you now have your attacker on your back with your face in the mat. The attacking party has been sitting there resting the whole time your doing bag work and such, so he's fresh. Fortunately, his instructions are just to tie you up and frustrate you. Yours are to go for submission.

To be honest, I hated it and loved it at the same time. We did it in "The Shed" which was a large shed padded with thick mats. No AC, no fans, and it was usually about 95F+ or so outside (thus vastly hotter inside). The last time I did it, I did a circuit, then played attacker for a circuit. Then, because I was stupidly mouthy, got to do another circuit. At the end, I laid there content to just breath for a solid ten minutes.

Anyway, my partner put me in the guard on that second circuit for 12-15 minutes easy. I kept goading him, trying to get him to do something, and generally cursing his bastard family line. His response? "Fuck you, I'm tired. Beat my ass so we can rest."

Our instructor? He went and got some iced tea, talked to his wife for a bit, talked on the phone, and made many "Gee, it's a little hot out here," comments, the rat bastard. He was a good guy, and I still miss him, RIP

My kinda thing.

Yummy.

But not artistic. At least not in the 'fluid and graceful combat' style, anyway.

Whatever this site was, it was taking forever to load and I'm already at 80% of my bandwidth for this month.

Brief, written description?

ahso, I was wondering what this had to do with sex.

Pffft. Thugs do nothing for me. This guys was scary in a, "Wow, I wouldn't want to piss him off", kind of way. I'm not sure he could form complete sentences, either. He may have just grunted and pointed.

However, I do have some thrilling combat fantasies. No doubt about that.

Naked women doing submission wrestling. The loser bottoms for the winner.

That sounds fucking grueling...in a cool way. Wish I could yammer, gotta go meet a friend. More later.
