I think it's great for opening discussions. Discussions about BDSM, about erotica, about the sexuality of women and mothers becoming mainstream and not just relegated to "mommy porn", about our expectations of fiction in general. I'm very optimistic about the effect it'll have on our culture in broadening our viewpoints and getting people curious and talking.
As for quality... meh, didn't like it. I read about how the two main actors hated each other, to the point where they literally could not conceal it during interviews and I could feel that lack of chemistry on the screen.
Thank you! Just what I'm looking for! I too am optimistic about the change that we're facing...a new sexual revolution, maybe? I don't know. And you're so correct regarding the chemistry...I saw NONE. He was a horrible Christian Grey.
It was pretty tame and I read the first book and I was writing raunchier fanfiction when I graduated high school. But baby steps. This is the first of it's type being shoved into the spotlight and I kind of like the way it's challenging our perceptions of erotica and porn as being solely for men, or when it is for women, it's "cute",
, "mom/grandma sure loves her trashy romances". It's liberating already and the good and bad hype has gotten it a lot of attention for the genre itself. Either from cocky fools who think that's easy, aspiring authors realizing they can write their sexual fantasies down and people will read them and enjoy them, or people like me, who didn't think it was that great and set out to make something better quality.
Either way, all of those things are good, getting people writing and reading.
I loved the group of people (mostly women) in the theatre that actually sat around chatting about the movie. Never have I seen that before. There were a few men there, with their women, of course, and they seemed to enjoy sitting in a theatre full of women who were chomping at the bit to see this on the big screen. No Oscars for this movie, but the entertainment factor both online and in reality is amazingly fun to watch unfold.
Ha! I didn't stay in the theater after it was over but my friends and I talked about it at length. I truly believe all the negative reactions about manipulation and "abuse" are reactions to the fact that people have to now imagine their mothers with a glass a dildo between their thighs and this book(or another, even dirtier book) clasped in their free hand. There are so many worse examples of glorified abusive relationships out there. The only reason people are mad about this one is because it's getting their momma hot and they don't want her to want Christian Grey. They want to protect her from that. Just my two cents, from listening to and reading multiple articles about it.
It didn't measure up to the hype but it did make conversation with the neighbors afterward interesting so I agree that it is opening dialogue. The actors seriously had NO chemistry, an essential element, totally missing. *shrug* meh
Actually, I think using actors who hated each other to film a romantic film with sex and kink in it, is the right baby step to take. Kind of testing the waters with this, middle school, preteen dance - "At least nine inches between you!" BDSM is kind of scary to some people and they do see it as abuse, even with all of the rituals and rules put into place. Gotta broach it softly, get the curiosity flowing, get the feeling of "hey, this isn't so bad! Look, nobody died!"![]()
I am so sick of hearing about this fucking movie. Anyone would think there'd never been a film involving BDSM or even sex before.
