Fictional URLs

I understand that this site doesn't want anyone advertising things within their stories. But why do I get a story rejected because it contains a completely fictional web reference. Since the website doesn't even exist, what's the problem. It seems to me that this restriction prevents the internet from even existing in our stories.

I need other opinions on this.

mcfbridge,

Try to contact Laurel (the webmistress) and explain that it is a fictional url.

The best way to contact her is through PM, not email. You can PM her by opening the stickies which are the first few threads in this forum, then clicking on the PM button on the post which Laurel has made.

It's possible that maybe a URL will show up in the story as a URL and foul something up or vice versa or something, quite apart from any advertising aspect.

Just typing w w w . and then any words makes it act like a link whether it is or not, and that is what isn't acceptable.

The parser or whatever it is recognises and surrounds the 3w with the url link in brackets thing

So instead of making it a URL just leave out the w w w .

Edited to seperate the Ws so that they aren't links.

URLs

Actually, I had thought of the www thing so my story didn't use the that part. I simply referred to something I called XGAMESHOW.COM., which, as I've indicated does not exist.

While I agree that you should be able to put fictional URL's in your story I can also understand that there is only so much time that can be devoted to approving submissions and checking URL's can take some of that time. I would suggest contacting someone before you even submit the story to make sure things are clear.

Also, new websites appear every day. What doesn't exist today, may very well be an official site tomorrw - a site that perhaps doesn't want to be linked to from Lit.

The editor doesn't really check to see if URLs are fictitious or not, particularly if they're pornographic. Resubmit with an explanation in the notes box, if you haven't already done so.

:)

They don't like putting links in stories. Links break all the time and 50,000+ pieces in the archive make it a pain to maintain. Links do not automatically show up in the story as a link, by the by. All stuff done to the story must be done with HTML which isn't, by the way, the same tags you use here, on the vBulletin.

Instructions

The second time I submitted the story I put in very specific instructions

These said first that the website mentioned in my story did not exist. Second that if such a website came into existence, I was in no way connected with it, and had no intention of advertising it or any other product with my story.

Feeling duly chastised.
