I'm getting two. On Sunday. For free. I spoke to a woman who lives around here whose little boy has two ferrets that he isn't taking care of properly. He just started middle school and he's too caught up with school and activities and so they're giving these two babies away. Pumpkin and Bandit. Besides some of the ferret basics, what else should I know?

Btw...the babies are de-scented and come with cage, toys, litter, litter box, food, etc.

DO NOT FEED THEM MARSHALLS DIET...some people will swear by it but if you look it up online it is kinda lower on the "proper" nutrition scale...i feed mine Ultra-Blend Select 8 in1 it is great food or the best one, but higher in price is 8 in 1 Ultimate. Helps with the oder of their poop and keeps their coats from getting too oily, hence fewer baths.

I have a few good links that i used Trinique...i'll dig them up and you can look through them...

now i gotta post pics of mine...

if you have any direct questions feel free to ask me...i've had ferrets for many years...had 3 critters one lived for 8 years, one lived for 6 years, one lived for 5 years...now i have my new two one is 2 years old and the other is just hitting a year old... :p

FERRETS ARE AWESOME!!! :nana:

thanks kiten...i'll make sure i get the right food lol

my sister in law loves ferrets...she had Millie right up until the poor thing was blind and balding she was so old.

i'm so thrilled. i love the little guys, and they're so personable, too.

Five days, two hours, and two minutes until I bring the babies home!!

ferrets can go down very small holes. so you should check your walls, esp where they meet the floors, inside low cupboards which have holes in the back. certain heating/air vent covers have holes that are too large. i'm guessing, but i'd say a ferret can go through an 1.5 in hole, if not a 1 in one. (as to babies, or younguns, even smaller!).

Reclining chairs (Lazy-Boys) are one of the biggest killers of ferrets believe it or not. This obviously applies mostly to the 'run of the house' varity as oppose to the ones that are kept in chages. They climb up inside to take a nap and someones comes along to watch TV, flips the lever and...

Also, if memory serves (and it may not) chocolate is also a major no-no for ferrets.

If you have a female and you are not breeding her, please be sure she is spayed, or get her spayed. I had a pair of females years ago and I lost one to sustained estruus.

From the Ferret FAQ page:

Heat Periods

Female ferrets are seasonally polyestrus, which means they can come into heat more than once during the breeding season (March through August). They are also induced ovulators, which means ovulation occurs after copulation. The onset of heat is recognized by swelling of the external genitalia. If a ferret in heat does not engage in copulation, she will remain in heat for up to 160 days. If she is bred, the swelling of the external genitalia usually regresses to normal within 2-3 weeks after copulation.

Sustained sexual heat is dangerous and life-threatening because it usually results in bone marrow suppression. This results in severe anemia and decreases in the number of circulating white blood cells. Because of this likelihood, any female ferret not intended for breeding should be sterilized (spayed or ovariohysterectomized) at 6-8 months of age. Female ferrets in heat can be taken out of heat within about 3 weeks by injection of a specific hormone after the first 10 days of heat. Once out of heat, they can be spayed before they come back into heat (usually 40-50 days after administration of the hormone).

You may also want to put babylatches on cupboards that you don't want them into. They won't eat a lot of dried macaroni, but they will play with it and you'll find it EVERYFRICKENWHERE, months after the episode. They're insatiably curious, and one of mine just had to taste everything she found. That's another reason to keep the under the sink cabinets locked if possible.

I don't want to rain on your parade but, in some places, it is illegal to keep ferrets in your house. You should check on that before accepting them.
