Favorite Robert Frost

"Nothing Gold Can Stay" (if that is the correct title was always a good one. He also wrote a poem about a stone wall that I have frequently enjoyed.

(Good call on "Birches", btw)

Mine is also "Nothing Gold Can Stay", I first saw it in "The Outsiders" by SE Hinton. Frost is a great poet.

One of mine...

ACQUAINTED WITH THE NIGHT
I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
O luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.

if you've spent any time in New England woods you can attest to the length of time an old granite wall will stick around...

Living in Vermont I've become quite fond of those old walls scattered throught the woods. Every morning I look across my field to the outline of just such an old wall.

This is my favorite by Frost

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

modest...too bad they're all covered with 3 feet of snow right now eh?

Yeah, I neglected to mention that because I am in denial.

Thanks lexie, the title totally escapes me.

Somehow, that poem always reminds me of the classics:

FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND

One night I dreamed I was walking
Along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints.
Other times there were one set of footprints.
This bothered me because I noticed that
During the low periods of my life when I was
Suffering from anguish, sorrow, or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints,
So I said to the Lord, "You promised me,
Lord, that if I followed You,
You would walk with me always.
But I noticed that during the most trying periods
Of my life there have only been
One set of prints in the sand.
Why, When I have needed You most,
You have not been there for me?"
The Lord replied,
"The times when you have seen only one set of footprints
Is when I carried you."

By Mary Stevenson

Actually, I shouldn't laugh. The Road Not Taken is the only Robert Frost poem that I can think of, at the moment. I might recognize others if I see them, though.
