I have long believed that people can be defined by their favorite movie(s). The type of person you are is indicated by the entertainment you consume, usually. So I wanted to start a thread where people could discuss their favorite movies and why they love them and what others think those movies indicate about them.
So here is a list of my favorite movies and what I think they indicate about me.

Fight Club: Ok, this might must be because I am a 22 year old hetro male, but this movie is AMAZING! It does cry out to the inner animal in men and make us want to release all that pent up rage and frustration from living a very dull life. Plus a good mind fuck is always a way of clearing out the mental cob-webs.

Super Troopers: The BEST opening scene to a comedy ever. When the kid licks the glass of the troopers car and says "The snausberrys taste like snausberrys" I just about piss myself with laughter. This is a movie that you can just have on a background noise while doing other things and not be too distracted...plus its a simple comedy movie that isn't too heavy on the poop and fart jokes. A sophisticated gross-out comedy, if you will.

Shakespeare in Love It is a chick movie but damnit I love it! Look at my AV and Nick and you should understand.

So tell us what some of your favorite movies are...

Beavis and Butt-Head Do America : Truely one of the screen's greatest gems! Beavis is the funniest character since Homer Simpson and captures the essence of being a horny teenage boy. I can remember those days with shame and humor, now. Then...yeah, then they were pretty grim days when old issues of Playboy were like the Roseta Stone crossed with the Pentagon Papers!

I LOVE movies.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is one of my absolute favorites. I am a huge martial arts fan; to me, its a well choreographed dance. This movie was awesome!

Monsters, Inc. has become a recent favortie, I just saw it. And I loved it. It was funny and very touching and the animation was amazing. I'm a big kid at heart.

Swingers is another favortie. Some of the lines cracked me up...I just loved it.

Nothing to Lose is so funny...I just bought it on DVD. Tim Robbins is absolutely hysterical in it playing opposite Martin Lawrence. I cried I laughed so hard the first time I saw it.

Ok..thats only a small list of my favorite movies. Im sure I will be back! :D

I caught a movie recently on HBO that I had never seen before and now consider one of the funniest things to come out of the 80's. Let It Ride starring Richard Dryfuss, Jennifer Tilly, and Teri Garr is a wonderful little romp about a guy having a "very good day" at the track. The plot is funny with many little twists and turns and Dryfuss's inner monologues about money is something we have all done!

Too many others to list. Thanks for starting the thread, Yorick!

Thanks Waverly...The Last Seduction, excellent choice! No one gets naked or is as scarily sexy as Linda Finorintino...she was robbed of an Oscar Nomination that year. Another movie sort of along the same line as Seduction and Kissing Jessica Stien is Nina Takes A Lover staring Laura San Giacomo. Good comedy movie with a nice romantic undertone, and an urbane sense of humor.

Lawrence of arabia
Jaws
Zulu
Repoman
Mr Roberts
duck soup
Blazing saddles
To have and have not
the razors edge
caddyshack
casablanca
Where the buffalo roam
High noon

Finding Forester
Dead Poets Society
My Fair Lady
The Searchers
North to Alaska
101 Dalmations (the animated movie)
Head
Guys and Dolls

I"m sure there are a lot that I've forgotten, but that's a start.

Gigi and Guys and Dolls are two of my favorite musicals. I am very glad that both Moulin Rouge and Chicago have done so well at the box office and with award recognitions...mayble Hollywood will bring back the musical!

Hey--a few classic comedies that seem to have escaped notice:

The Blues Brothers
The Princess Bride (Rob Reiner)
This Is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner again!)
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension (I believe that's the full title)
Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (very au courant)
Catch-22 (ditto)
Grosse Point Blank (John Cusack!)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
High Fidelity (Cusack again)
A Fish Called Wanda (how could I forget?)

Maybe that's MORE than 'a few'...

Oh, and can I rant for a sec? THE SOUND OF MUSIC IS ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS. It may be a good quality film, but I find the dialogue, music and plot so damned annoying...

Maybe it's 'cuz I had to sit thru umpteen performances of it when I was in high school and play countless medleys of the music...

If you like Spinal Tap you have to see Waiting for Gufman and Best in Show, two films that have the same sort of Spinal Tap-esque attitude and are VERY funny.

Okay I believe one of the things we were supposed to do is explain why we picked the movies we did, so here goes.

Kennith Brannagh's Hamlet is as good as Shakespeare on film could hope to be. Unlike many other adaptations of Shakespear's work, this one is extreemly lively and if I dare say so, a brisk four hours. Just a beautiful film with a fantastic cast. If you've nevr seen any Shakespeare on film I highly reccomend this, it's a real trip.

2001: A Space Odyssey is my favourite piece of science fiction ever. I'm a HUGE Kubrick fan and I love all his work, but this is something that is so original I've honestly never seen anything else like it.

Apocalypse Now Redux isn't just the best war movie ever made, it's the best anti-war movie ever made. Guess which character George W. Bush reminds me of? I'll give you a hint: it's Colonel Kurtz. :)

Pulp Fiction is just everything cool put into a box. I love the dialougue in this film, it's probably my favourite screenplay ever. Samuel L. Jackson is just too cool. "Mine's the one that says 'Bad Motherfucker' on it."

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is everything a good martial arts film should be. It absolutly took my breath away the first time I saw it and I've been in love with it ever since. Good martial arts scenes should seem more like a dance than a fight, and that's excactly what this film accomplishes.

Braveheart. I've probably watched this two dozen times. I can't think of a single complaint I have about the film. Oh, and Sophie Marceau is the most beautiful woman in the world.

The Quest For The Holy Grail is just so stupid, yet so intelligent at the same time. It is absolutly impossible to make it through this film without laughing out loud. "I'm not dead!"

Memento is as creative a thriller as I can remember seeing. For those who haven't seen it the plot is this guy has no short term memory and he's trying to track down the man who killed his wife. Trust me, if you haven't seen this film, do it. It will blow your mind.

Other great films:
This is Spinal Tap "Are we doing Stonehenge tonight?"
Heat (De Niro + Pacino = goodness)
Lord Of The Rings, both parts so far
The Legend Of Drunken Master (Jackie Chan before Hollywood made him silly)
Love and Human Remains, a Canadian film by Denis Arcand. See it if you ever get the chance. There's a love story and a serial killer story going on at the same time, hence the title.
Last Night, another good Canadian movie by Don McKellar. A funny/dramatic look at what the average person would REALLY do if it was the last night on earth. I love it more every time I see it.
Crash by David Cronnenberg. Wildly controversial and full of adult themes. Not just adult as in sexual, but adult as in seriously disturbed. Nonetheless, an amazing film.

A few non-English language films

Les comperes, one of the classic French comedies
Like Water for Chocolate--talk about erotic!
Spirited Away--the recent Miyazaki anime masterpiece--I saw the dubbed version unfortunately, but the visuals and sound just left me gaping in awe when the movie finished. I couldn't get out of my seat for a while.
