Okay, just a few questions to get a feeling for peoples likes/dislikes. :)

How do you decide what story you're going to read? Is it largely based on category?

And if it is based mainly on category, which categories do you enjoy most?

Have there ever been any stories outside of the normal categories you look at that caught you off guard as being especially outstanding?

Are there any categories you would absolutely not read?

(Am I asking way too many questions? hehe)

Thanks, everyone. :)

Hi Bi, (Sorry couldn't resist.)

Usually I find stories to read by either their titles or by the authors.

There are some catagories I usually don't read, but if it's a story by an author I know of then I'll read it. Normaly I don't read the stories in the BDSM, Nonconsent/reluctance, or gay male catagories, but like I said it depends on the authors.

As far as a favorite catagory, I can't think of one.

Cat

Romance is my favourite. A lot more likely to find an actual story there.

Stay away from incest and gay male. Really not my thing.

Unlikely to read any other cats, I don't really like stroke.

But my usual choice is authours. If I like the authour, I'll probably read their story.

I don't read any fetish stuff, just b/c I always afraid I'm going to run into some one getting shit or peed on and bodily functions don't turn me on and actually disqust me a bit. But if an author I truly enjoyed wrote one and asked me to read it I would. I can admit to not reading many in the Erotic couplings cat b/c they all get a bit redundant after awhile. not that they are not good, just I need a break for a while. I am also not a big fan of first time. too innocent. but for the most part, I enjoy all the other categories . . oh, except for Transvestites and cross dressers not b/c they aren't good, just not my thing.

Thanks guys, great feedback so far. :)
It basically seems like its good to get a following, hehe, and then you can write about whatever and they'll read about whatever *laughs*.

I largely read stories based on voting scores (i.e. the little Red H). From there if I like one story I will tend to click through to other stories by the same author.
My personal favorite categories are Erotic Couplings and Group Sex. Loving Wives, BDSM and Anal are my next most read.
I've been impressed by the quality of the story in high rated stories in categories I don't typically read. Generally they don't arouse me, but I can enjoy the writing.

Exactly.

There are authors here I'll follow into any category and even when I've had some misgivings in the beginning, they've never let me down. Category doesn't mean shit if the writing or characters are no good and the same is true if they are.

I decide what story I'm going to read largely based on what category it's in and if it sounds like it will be to my liking.

Categories I like most are: Erotic Couplings, Reluctance/Non-Consent, Group Sex, Toys & Masturbation, Reviews & Essays, sometimes BDSM, Exhibitionism/Voyeurism, and Poetry (Erotic and Non-Erotic both).

I don't venture into other categories much at all.

Categories I don't read are Incest/Taboo, Fetish, Transexuals/Cross Dressers, Anal, Erotic Horror, Lesbian Sex, Mind Control, Sci-Fi and Fantasy, Mature, and I don't much venture into Loving Wives. Although I've written for the category, I usually don't care much for the typical stories in it (no offense to anyone).

The rest I could take or leave. Wow -- looking at my lists, I guess I'm kind of picky. But, then, everyone has their own individual kinks. ;)

That's my 2 centavos. ;)

I almost exclusively write Lesbian sex. Strangely, I rarely read anything in the cat. I think because I am afraid of subconciously stealing someone else's idea. There are some writers i will read in any cat and some writers in Les I follow.

there is no cat i won't read, if someone I know wrote the story. I'm not into gay (obviously), but I'll read anything Carson writes. Same with Shang.

About the only cat I avoid like the plague is Celebrities. Being pop culture challenged, I find the authors expect you to know everything about the characters, explain nothing and if you have never seen freinds (et al), it just makes no sense.

That's kinda comforting to here from everybody as I'm something of a category whore myself.

Well, let's see ... I've published in EC, Group, Lesbian, NonHuman, NonErotic, both erotic & non-erotic poetry, Romance, Letters, How To, Toys, Chain Stories, and Mind Control.

I'll read any category if the story's written by an author I admire. I don't do a whole lot of reading, otherwise -- although I do TRY to read at least one story by one "new" author each week. At those times, I tend to choose based on title & description -- while favoring Group, Lesbian, Toys, and EC categories.

Welcome to the AH! :rose:

i mimick what impster said largely.
i used to read about ten stories or so a week.. all from authors who asked me to read...but ive had to fall back since getting a job.
cats that i dont normally read are incest and gay...as stated above, i'll read anything if someone i know has written it.
fave cats, lesbian and humor, bdsm

I don't read anything I don't have to. I can't help but read like a writer, noticing all these tricks and devices and techniques. Sad but true.

Except for contest stories. That's when I check up on what everyone's up to these days. Even then, I'll usually give the author maybe a third of a page to prove to me that reading this story will be worth my while, less if I have evidence that it won't be worth it. (Second person, lots of exclamation points, bad paragraphing, awkward writing, various other backclick triggers I have.)

Like many others, there is not cat I won't read if I like the writer, but I don't usually go for the hardcore humiliation or gory stuff. There are also a limited number of authors that I would follow into the novella category just because of the time commitment involved.

When I read stories, I look for M/F with shades of N/C or reluctance, but there are other things I look for as well.

Thanks so much you guys. :)
Now, the question is, how do I become a favorite author? *laughs* I think I'll just keep plugging away because personally I think my stuff is fairly decent (obviously, if I didn't think it was, why would I post it? hehe). Its also nice to know that theres a range of tastes, so that dabbling in various categories wouldn't be harmful. :)

you're already one of mine, bi. :>

i favor loving wives, group sex and lesbian. i periodically venture into erotic couplings, too.

there is a paradox in popularity. If you want to get a strong readership quickly, you are better off concentrating on a single cat. Crossing genre's will lead to a wider appeal, but it will take more time to build a readership as some readers will not follow you to other cats.

Best of luck :)

Colly speaketh most wisely. Word. ;)

I prefer First Time, and Erotic Couplings, then maybe Romance.

I might read the others if the title captures me, but almost never Gay, Incest, Anal, BDSM. Just not what I'm in to.

I'm not likely to read a story that has Part X in the name, unless its a part 1. And I won't read a further part of a story that story unless it appears in the next day or two of the previous one. If you are going to publish a multi-chapter story, have them written and ready to go before submitting #1. And I'm guilty of not doing that--I have a sequel of one half way written, but that story will stand on its own.

And I'll often look at the length before I read it (committment problem), and may also read Public Comments, or see how my H's the writer has on other stories before I decide to read it.

My favourites are, in no particular order: Erotic Horror, BDSM and Non-consent/Reluctance. Sometimes Loving Wives can be hot, if it's written well. Actually, "if it's written well" goes for any category.

I like it hardcore.  :p

Oh, this reminds me about those polls we had almost two years ago. I'll go bump them for the fresh batch of AH posters.
