What's the best BDSM book you've ever read? Literature, Instructional, or otherwise?

I always liked the first book of the Sleeping Beauty Trilogy. The other two just sort of lag on though...

I haven't read many BDSM books so I will be interested in the opinions in this thread as well. I have read the Sleeping Beauty Trilogy and I have to agree that the first book is the best of the three, but I wasn't that impressed with the overall feel of the story. :)

I have a book I really like called Travels With a Whip. It's about a big city girl going on vacation in the mountains and finding out the resort she signed up for isn't exactly what she was expecting. It has it's campy moments (but then most books do) but I enjoyed it and the campy moments are just plain cute.

Captivation

by Natasha Rostova.

One of the first real "erotica" books I ever read. It's light on bondage, but high on D/s... The lead male is VERY dominant, and the lead female is also quite dominant... but learns to submit to both her inner slut and the male who captured her.

The author is very good. This book actually manages to have tons of sex scenes AND a good plot.

I'll be sure to look into the books mentioned above. One can never read too much erotica.

What about your favorite BDSM movie?

Other than a very dog earred copy of an erotic paperback (still have it in a dresser draw around here somewhere) which i stumbled upon in my mid-teens while browsing through the racks at a local Barnes & Noble called the Oyster Pearl (anonymous author) .....

Story of O
&
Screw the Roses Send me the Thorns.

Favorite BDSM Movies:

Nine and a Half Weeks
&
The Secretary

The Kushiel's series

Excellant novels! I would have listed them myself but I didn't really classify them in my head as BDSM novels despite what Phedre is. Definatly worth reading more than once and never loaning to anyone you don't implicitly trust to return them.

You know, I didn't love Story Of O... I just read it recently and it was my first BDSM book. I have a few more that I will have to try out.

Yea, Story of O had too much heavy whipping for me, which I'm not really into.

sorry

Really? I think they are very strongly BDSM...even more so than the extremely cliche` Beauty series and Story of O. Both were entertaining reads, but had no depth whatsoever (in my opinion). The Kushiels captures the depth of submission and BDSM in a way I don't think the other "BDSM" novels I have read even set a toe on. I think that's why I like them so much. More mental BDSM and less "oh, beat me raw and fuck my brains out Master Lordship!"-y.

O.k. the last line made me laugh. You're right they are strongly on the BDSM side; I think I didn't classify them that way in my own mind because that's not what they are about. Granted I don't think you're going to find a bigger masochist anywhere than Phedre but while that was central to her personality and the book it wasn't what the book was really about. Plus I also tend to classify my books by which section of the bookstore I found them in and I found them in the fantasy section.

If I'm honest though my favorite part of those books isn't the BDSM aspects (though they're great fun) it's the irony involved in Phedre and Joscelin's relationship. That was definatly clever on Carey's part.

Edited to add: For those that read what Serijules and I said and went "huh?" we're talking about the Kushiel's Legacy trilogy by Jaqueline Carey. Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Chosen, and Kushiel's Avatar.

I have issues with cliche` dramatic BDSM...can you tell? LOL

Anyhow...you are right, there is a lot more to the books than the BDSM aspect, but that's exactly what makes them real to me, although they are of course very much fantasy based. Overall, they are a good mix of everything, which is what makes them work I think.

lol Yeah I can see the issues and sympathize with them most of the time. A lot of BDSM geard books overly dramaticize their characters as if BDSM is the be all and end all of their existence and go a bit over the top.

A very good mix of everything. Carey is an excellant author. I wouldn't mind her writing a book or two about Imri as I can't help but wonder how he turns out. She leaves a lot of question floating at the end of the third book I hope she chooses to continue writing.
