Fast Fingers...

Desiree took a deep breath and delved in.
"I want to propose a sting operation to the Captain. I want to set up a private jewel exhibition with myself as the seller. It will put me right up front in the thick of things and I will have a prime opportunity to grab our lady."

"It will also put me right in the middle of danger if anything goes wrong," She thought to herself but did not vocalize it.

"I can do it, Marcus," She said urging him to agree,"But we have to do it soon. Hopefully in the next few days. Problem is-it would be before you were reinstated. But she is getting ready to move again-I can feel it! We just need to give her a definate target."

"I don't like it but I think that it is the best way to catch our lady. I wish that I could be there to back you up but if I was to showed up then Captain Harrison would really have my badge."

He sat back against the chair and looked outside again, thinking what he was going to do and said, "If there was a way that I could be your back up would you want me to be there. If not then say so but I know that I will be sitting up hoping not to get that call to say that you have been killed but the call from you saying that you're alright."

Did she want him there? The question rang in her ears over and over again. The thought of going this without him-her partner in every way-made her shiver but she knew that they had to act fast or, after the fiasco last week, they would loose all hope of getting their hands on her.

"Marcus," She said, looking down at the table and avoiding his eyes,"There is nothing I want more than to have you by my side in this thing. It is your baby and, quite frankly, having my partner by my side would make me feel alot better."

"I still have to run this past the Captain but I think he might go for it. Problem is IF you were to be able to be there and it blew up like last time there would be no way for you to get your badge back. I dont want you to sacrifice something that means so much to you on an idea that might not even work."

"Then we make it so tempting that she will be unable to pass it up. We have Captain Harrison ask that some of the more precious and well known jewels in the city taken out of circulation and then put it in the papers that there is another cat burglar out there, even better than The Devil. That way she will have to go after the bait, just so she can show everyone that she is the best cat burglar in the city. And then she will fall straight into your little trap."

Marcus then leaned forward and took one of Desiree's hands into his and said, "I want to be there though. If you can ask Captain Harrison politely and promise him that it will not end up like last week then I think he will go for it. I know that it will work because I know the one place that she will come in from and I will be watching that place like a hawk."

OOC

Hey there people, sorry it's been a while since I've posted, but been busy with RL stuff. You know how it is. This thread is moving at a million miles per hour isn't it? I'm having a little trouble keeping up, cos I really only have time for maybe one or two posts per day max. So you guys let me know what you want me to do. I can write myself out of the thread, or maybe any other alternatives?

OOC: Angelius and I have an idea for a sting operation. Would for you to join us. We both have many threads going these days so this one is gonna slow down I think. You might try to use this to get back into Mac's good graces.

huh... what, I think that I must be too tired. I am starting to see double now.

Nope...just my computer screwing up. I dont know what we are going to do with this thread...seems that we have lost the other half of our team.

OOC: You are right about that. I know that we are good writers and work well together but we can not do all four main parts as that would really fry my already warped brain.

LOL...agreed..sorry to see Marcus and Desiree go the way of the threads but I guess all must come to an end sometime.

I am not going to give up just yet. Red could write into this, I hope as this is nothing without The Devil.

OOC

Sorry peeps... I really don't have the time to carry this on. I WILL post occasionally if you need me to (cos seriously, I enjoyed writing with you guys too, and if circumstances were different, I'd continue.), but it might be better for me to write myself out, or if you guys can, find a replacement... Let me know k?

OOC: Let's see what this stirs up. Maybe someone out there would like to take up Razor's role, or they could create a new character, maybe another officer assigned to help with the sting.

IC:

The phone ringing beside her bed woke her up. Maybe it was Razor, calling to explain why he hadn't shown up last night.

"Hello?"

"I have information you want."

Mac sat straight up in bed. "Who is this?" It dawned on her then, it was her cell, the one used for her contacts.

"I have information you want, and you, my dear devil, have something I want. Meet me at midnight tonight, 54th and main, I'll be waiting."

They hung up before she could say another word. Maybe she was finally going to get somewhere, maybe justice was finally going to be done.

*************

Across town, a message was left on the answering machine of one Marcus Thompson.

"I know who the devil is. Tonight, midnight, 54th and main. Your girl will be there."

OOC: I don't quite know where I'm going with this, but it was the first thing that popped into my head.

OOC: Sounds good and I am so glad this thread isnt dying out...its a great one.

Please post quickly as I have a great idea about what is going to happen.

Desiree sat in Captain Harrison's office watching him go through the file that she had handed him when she had stepped into the office.

She sat on the edge of the seat, hands clasped in her lap and literally holding her breath as he looked up from the paperwork and straight at her. She tried to read his expression but couldnt. She swallowed hard and managed to say,"Well, Sir, what do you think?"

Sitting back in his chair, he rested his chin on his hand without his gaze leaving her questioning eyes. "I think that you have a very good basis for your theory. But you are asking for a lot of jems to be endangered if this sting of yours goes belly up. What happens if these jems are stolen just like those at the auction?"

Desiree knew she was going to have to get around that last part. "Captian," She said, feeling out her words,"I cant guarentee you anything but both of us know that this is the best lead we have had in this case and if we dont act on it we may never catch our lady. And...if it works than you are out of the hotseat with HQ."

Captain Harrison nodded slowly as he sat up to his desk again. "Ok, I'll give you that one Ashford. I'll make the arrangements but this better not be another night like Saturday. Or else I will have your badge laying in my desk next to your partner's."

Desiree took a deep breath. "Here goes," She thought. "About that Captain, I need you to reinstate Thompson so that he can be a part of this. He has been tracking The Devil since this case began and I think we can pull this off better with him there. No one knows The Devil better than him and I would feel better with him there."

The Captain looked as if he was about to explode at the suggestion but then he seemed to settle down and looked at Desiree suspiciously. "Tell me, Ashford," He said slowly, drawing out his words,"How is it that before Saturday, you and Thompson couldnt stand each other but now you two cant do enough for each other?"

Desiree swallowed hard. Oh oh...this did not look good. The Captain knew-somehow and now they were both looking at new partners if she didnt do something quick. "Captain," She said, trying to keep her voice steady,"Saturday night Thompson and I got as close to death as I ever want to be again. Facing a cop-hating maniac tends to give you a new perspective on things, thats all."

Captain Harrison continued to stare at her but the suspicion did not leave his eyes. Finally he nodded his head curtly. "Okay, Ashford. I'll accept that answer-for now. But just remember this, I expect proffessionalism from my cops and I better not see anything but that from the two of you-Understand?"

Desiree nodded quickly and stood up looking at Captain Harrison questioningly. "About Thompson, Sir." With a grunt, he opened his drawer and produced Marcus' badge and gun and placed them on the desk. As Desiree went to take them, he placed his hand on hers and looked straight into her eyes. "You tell that partner of yours that there had better be no more fuck ups, you hear? Next time it wont be just a suspension." And, with that, he released her hand and she scooped up the items and left quickly.

Grabbing up the phone, she placed a call to Marcus' cell phone. She had long ago stopped trying to reach him at his apartment. When he picked up, she didnt even give him a chance to answer but blurted out,"Put on your cop clothes, Partner, were back in business." She couldnt keep the grin from her voice but she didnt care.

Marcus got to his feet when he heard the news, he was back and he had Desiree to thank for it. He had to do something to let her know how happy he was. He rushed towards his bedroom and opened his wardrobe. After he pulled out his jeans, t-shirt and jacket and put them on. After he put on his boots he walked out of his apartment and locked the door behind him.

He then jumped into his car and drove at a leisurely pace and headed towards the police station. As soon as he entered the car park he saw Desiree standing there with a big smile and his badge and gun in her hands. As soon as he got out of his car he walked over to her, checked that there was nobody around and hugged her, picking her up off her feet.

"Thank you beautiful, or should I say partner again. So, tell me what has been happening while I have been away. Anything that I should know, like has Barton been trying any moves on you. Oh, and before I forget I have to go somewhere, alone- there is something that I have to do. I know that you are my partner but this I have to do by myself."

Desiree's grin widened when Marcus picked her up for a bear hug and she gave him a quick one back before struggling out of his arms.

Handing him his gun and badge, she layed down her conversation with the Captain as he checked them and put them away. She made sure she mentioned the warning he gave about not messing things up this time around.

"As for Barton," She said with a malicious grin,"If you see him limping around you'll know why." Then her face got serious.

"Marcus," She said slowly,"I'm not gonna ask where or why. I'm gonna trust you to know what you are doing. But you had better come back to me safe or you will wish you were back dealing with Earl-got it?"

"Besides, I've got a few things to do in order to set this operation up. But I mean what I say. I want you back safe."

"Hey you know we well enought beautiful. I will return to you safe and sound after I have finished with this little business of mine. Now, let's go up there," Marcus said as he walked towards the elevator.

As soon as the elevator stopped and the doors opened Marcus saw Barton walk by and look at the two of them with a stare that could have killed them on the spot. He looked at Desiree and whispered, "When we are alone I want you to tell me what he did to you to make you do that to him."

He then saw Captain Harrison walk out of his office and walked over to him, a large smile on his face. As soon as he was standing in front of the captian he said, "I can't say thank you enough. I was beginning to go stir crazy after the first day."

"Don't thank me," Captain Harrison said. "Thank your partner, she almost begged me to get you reinstated. In fact I want you to come into my office and tell me what exactly has been happening between the two of you."

The two of them then went into Captain Harrison's office but before the captain closed the door he looked at Desiree and said, "Ashford, tell everyone that I am not to be disturbed- for anything."

Desiree bit her lip. "Damn," She muttered under her breath as the door closed on them. The cat was going to be out of the bag and she was headed towards a new partner. She watched the door, her heart pounding in her chest. How could she be so stupid. She knew she couldnt play the part of the impartial partner and now she had messed it up.

"Having partner trouble again," Came a familiar voice at her elbow and she shut her eyes and tried to wish him away.

"Barton, didnt you learn the last time you started this?." She said, not looking at him. She tried to ignore him until she felt his fingers running up and down her arm.

"Hey, if the Captain gives you another partner I could always apply for the part. We could have fun...lots of fun."

That did it. Whirling around to face the scumbag, she glared at him and hissed out,"And what makes you think that Thompson and I arnt going to be partners anymore?"

A grin split his face but he wouldnt say anything further about it but simply walked away wistling a tune. God, but she felt like running after him and breaking his neck.

Turning back, she stared at the door hard as if by staring at it she might be able to see through it and know what was going on.

"We have become friends Captain. Very good friends, we found out that we actually got along out of work and that is why we seem so close."

"So, you are telling me that you two are friends and that is it. You seem awfully chummy to be friends," Captain Harrison said. "Tell me, are you two a couple because if you are then I in good conscience can not allow you to stay as partners."

"No, we are not a couple. We have just become good friends and as a result better partners, that is what almost killed and going on suspension does for you captain, it gives you a lot of time to think and I thought about what I could do to make Desiree and myself work well together."

Captain Harrison got to his feet and walked to the door, opening it. He looked at Marcus with a smile and said, "Okay, I believe you. I don't want to break up the best team that I have. Now go and help Ashford plan this sting operation and remind her what will happen if she screws this up."

Marcus got to his feet and walked to the door, "You are a nice guy Captain," he said as he walked out. As soon as he walked out of the office he saw Desiree standing there and said, "Oh hi there partner."

He then walked over to his desk and sat down at it; picked up the file that Desiree had made up and began to read it. As he started to read it Desiree walked up to him and whispered something in his ear.

Desiree stood up after whispering for Marcus to meet her at the cafe. It was about lunch time, she was hungry and very curious about what had gone on behind the Captian's closed doors.

Picking up her purse, she walked out the door, took the elevator and was in her car. All the way to the cafe she couldnt help but wonder what Marcus had said to Captain Harrison. Though it couldnt have been bad or else they would already be getting aquainted with their new partners.

She pulled into the car lot and parked. In the cafe, she sat down in a booth at the back and waited for Marcus to show up.

As Marcus pulled out of the carpark he thought of what he was going to do or say when he met Desiree in the cafe. He drove his car out onto the street then and merging with the traffic drove in the direction of the cafe.

When he got to the cafe carpark the first thing that he saw was Desiree sitting at the booth near the window looking out at the carpark. As soon as Marcus parked the car, got out and locked it she waved at him which he returned.

As soon as he got into the cafe he walked over to the booth, sat down and then leaned forward, kissing her on the cheek. After he got his coffee he leaned forward and said, "So, what did you need to tell me beautiful that you couldn't tell me in the precinct."
