Fascinating AH phenomenon

....at least to me. How often I can agree with a fellow Litster here and totally disagree with him or her on a separate issue. This despite most AHers have distinct political philosophies (including). Truly an example of the individuality and free-thinking of most, if not all, Litizens, that we can spar or debate one moment and be completely in agreement the next.

The main thing, of course, is that we generally keep it somewhat friendly and respectful. A few flare-ups here and there, some occasionally flaming, but mostly civil
discourse. Certainly more civil than one finds in normal political debate. Another factor in my "Immodest Proposal" satire thread, albeit subconsciously. I truly think higher of people here (for the most part) than I do of most politicians. Says a lot of you guys and a lot against the pols.

So, seriously, I wish to say that I am proud of this site and fully plan to stick around for a long time.

I think we are usually closer than we believe, no matter what the issue... sometimes I think it's usually just a matter of perspective...

the thing about Ent, at least from where I'm sitting, is that I believe she is someone who can fight earnestly with you across a table on a subject for an hour then get up and give you a kiss...if she respects you she would never let a simple difference of opinion affect how she feels about you...

PAST one of those days, actually... Sev, you know what we talked about in PM some time back? It's gotten worse. And i've got yet another medical malfunction to add to the mix.

Bel - You're wrong! i'll sit and drink coffee and fight all night with somebody until it becomes absolutely ridiculous and we get the giggles. THEN get up and give em a smooch and be done with it.

Argueing is a way of venting for me. It's exceedingly difficult to let feelings show, so arguement is a way to let off steam. Or bang my head against the proverbial brick wall. Whichever. But it's mostly done in good humor and for the fun of it.

that is a good sign of that people are getting away from that "i am from this group so i must think like this and this and this" or "whoever believes in this must also believe in that", but rather form opinions on each matter by itself. because the world isn't that simple, that just one prescribed worldview could explain it... (now i just wish i would have the time to read enough about everything so i could form an informed opinion on everything. but well. wasting too much time on the internet to be able to do that, hehe)

We are pretty good, in that our debates never turn into flame wars. Actually, that is very good.

But here's my problem with discussion board discourse in general when it turns to political or philosophical issues. One of the few correct things the late John Kenneth Galbraith ever said was this:

"In the choice between changing one's mind and proving there's no need to do so, most people get busy on the proof."

That applies to this place, in spades! I know I'm usually as guilty as most, most of the time. However, I (almost) always apply the presumption of good will to my adversaries here, which forces me to at least try to understand the rationale for their views, requiring me to actually "engage" their ideas. When both sides in a debate do this interesting things sometime happen. I fear that doesn't happen very often here, though.
