Al'ika pouted and sighed. "I'll be ready in a bit," she said. She got a few things and smirked to herself, finding a book that Jester hadn't confiscated, and tucked it into her bag. "Let's go," she said finally, teetering a little.

Flish took her over and the heat of the forge washed over them when they entered. Edioz walked her over to a chair and conversed with Flish for a bit until he had to leave.

Al'ika curled up in the chair, and when Flish came over to say good bye she kissed his cheek. "Thanks, Flish," I say.

"No problem," he said. "I'm just glad I didn't do it in a cave this time." he headed out and Edioz returned to his forge, telling her to ask if she needed anything.

Al'ika noticed his sly grin and pouted. "I am going to be SO bored!" she groaned, crossing her arms. "What do you do in bed?!"

"I tried to tell you last time but you didn't want to hear it," he joked. "I'll take breaks and play chess with you if that will help."

"Please, or I'll go insane. And Edioz? I'm pretty sure sex is off the table too. Jester doesn't want me to do anything 'strenuous'." Al'ika rolled her eyes.

"Of course," he said, setting up the board. "Besides, you're like a niece to me." He made himself white and took the first move before going to hammer some more.

Al'ika thought about her first move and made it and waited for him to return, her fingers itching to play with her fireball.

Edioz sat back down and saw that she had opened the same way she used to when he taught her. "I hope you've got some new tricks," he said, countering it.

"A few," Al'ika admitted, countering his move. "Father used to play with me, when he wasn't drunk," she added. "Towards the end, at least."

Edioz made a move with his knight she hadn't seen him use before. "That's good," he said. "You two needed the bonding time"

"I still hated him," Al'ika confessed, frowning in thought. She moved her bishop closer to his knight. "Wasn't there for me. Maybe that's why I took up adventuring. To get away from him."

"Why he left me?" she asked, covering her own piece. "He left because he didn't want to deal with me anymore. I think that was the summer after I left Flish."

"No, when we were kids," he said, "His father was so bad, he was barred from the tavern on a weekly basis."

"We often learn from our parents," Al'ika noted dryly. "Except I never had my mother. Just Father. He never talked about her." She shrugged.

"He wouldn't, after what happened," he said. "Orcs took her soon after you turned two and the only time he saw her after that was when she died in his arms."

Al'ika blinked, and a tear left her eye. "I have no memory of her," she said softly. "Even Jep and Issak have memories of their mother. Flish doesn't, but that's understandable, I suppose, considering who his father is. . ." Another tear left her eye.

"It's OK," Edioz said, handing her a handkerchief. "You're old enough now to know the story. "It should also explain a bit more about your father. He thought you looked so much like her it hurt."

Al'ika held the sketch and looked at her mother for the first time. She did look a lot like her, she realized, and she gently traced the woman's cheek. "No wonder people said I didn't look like Father," she whispered.
