"We'll try it tonight and if it doesn't work, we'll think of something," he said. "Go be with Keth, you look like you need him."

Al'ika smiled and slightly shook her head. Edioz seemed to know her better than even her brothers. Kissing Edioz's cheek and hugging Fate, she walked back home. Changing into a shift, she curled up with Keth, nuzzling into him.

"Yes, I'm back," Al'ika said, kissing his cheek. "I had just wanted to let Edioz I was home safe and sound." Her lower lip trembled, remembering the rats, but she shrugged it off.

Al'ika told him the story, her voice cracking at some parts, shaking with fear at the mere mention of the rats. She cried throughout the story, her sobs getting louder and louder until she got to where she escaped and was back in Keth's arms. The big hidden tears that dared to come out yesterday were now in abundance, letting them fall, not caring who heard.

Keth listened through all of it, getting angry at the use of the goblin device. He held her as she broke down and said, "Tell Keth what you need, pretty human."

Al'ika couldn't speak, she was crying too hard. She clung to Keth fiercely, though, not wanting him to leave, fearing he would leave, for any reason. She had made the small venture to Edioz's alone, but that was different. It was a trip she always made.

Now, though, she didn't want him to leave her for any reason.

As she clung to him like a lifeboat, Keth sat there comforting her. She didn't want him to go, and he wouldn't dream of it for anything in the world.

Finally, after a long time of crying, Al'ika was calm enough to ask Keth to get her something light for her to eat. She felt like she wanted to throw up, but she knew she needed to eat.

Al'ika ate slowly, trying to calm her stomach and herself down. She dunked her bread in her soup multiple times to get it nice and moist.

When she finished eating, she curled up on his lap.

Al'ika finally spoke up. Her voice was very quiet, and had an element of fear. "Pretty human going to be okay?" she asked.

Al'ika nuzzled into her lover, feeling safe and sleepy, and it wasn't long before she fell asleep, a slightly possessive hand grabbing onto his.

When she fell asleep, Keth went about doing chores around the house, making sure to be within eaeshot if she woke up.

Al'ika was dreaming. She was ten years old again, running with Flish and Issak. It was a race. Whoever reached the barn loft first won. She wanted to win. She was already slightly ahead of the two boys.

"You're getting beaten by a girl!" she teased, laughing joyously. Victory was close, she could taste it!

But soon she was falling, and she landed in a pit of cold water.

"Issak? Flish?" she called up, trying to climb her way out. Something was crawling on her barefoot and she froze, thinking it was a spider. She loathed spiders.

She looked down and saw a rat. It was as big as her tiny foot, and she kicked it off. But more were coming. She kept fighting them, until they started biting. She started screaming then, not being able to see Issak and Flish peering down, not hearing them call for help.

It was a couple hours later before Jorr Natherson pulled her up from the pit, bitten, scared, and crying. . .

Those beady red eyes. . .

She woke up violently, throwing a pillow across her house without thinking, her eyes wide in terror. Her skin was damp with sweat, and she felt like she had just run forty miles away from Ashglow.

Al'ika clung to Keth, weeping. She had practically forgotten about her fear of rats until the box and Flish brought it up. She had deliberately buried it, so she could be stronger, so she could do dungeons and the like without being. . .

Well, without being a girl.

Her whole body shook with fear and tears, but eventually she calmed down, whimpering softly.

Keth cam back and smiled, seeing her sleep without tossing and turning for the first time since she had been home.

Al'ika woke up after a few hours, and she blinked a few times as her home came into view, her eyes seeking out Keth. Finding him in the kitchen, she smiled and remained in bed. It was warm and comforting for her.
