Fantastic article on book sales (ebooks too)

Well, OK, but this is pretty much a separate world from erotica ebooking. Fun to read, though.

And it brings to mind what was probably my biggest "save" in publishing consultation. Sara Gruen's first book contract (for Riding Lessons) was for a mass market approach. She was going to turn the deal down because they estimated that they would get more than half of the books they printed (only doing paperbacks) back and would pulp them. Beyond agonizing over her books being unread and pulped, she assumed this wasn't enough publisher interest in her book.

"Where are they distributing these books that they estimate they would be pulping more than half of them?" I asked.

"Oh, all of the Wal-Marts in the world," she answered. After the volume and exposure of that was "splained" to her, she took the deal, which bought her a horse farm and led to Water for Elephants.
