Hello,

I am a new writer that is attempting to get published. Right now I am writing a lot of m/m fiction and enjoying the hell outta it. Plus I see that there is a HUGE ebook market for it which is great.

I also right Fanfic for fun because I enjoy the hell out of my subjects. (Duran Duran) I'm wondering, can a serious writer lose credibility if they write slash fiction?

I know that as a creator, you create for yourself first however, is fanfic specifically slash looked down upon these days.

The DDFic website used to be pretty hot, now the creator hasn't touched it in over a year. *sigh*

=( I still write it and I'm thinking of posting it on a blog like LiveJournal just so people can enjoy it and know that I'm psychotic!!! LOL

BTW, I'm 38 and married with two kids!

Yeah, the community that most appreciates fanfic is indeed, livejournal and the newer one called dreamwidth-- if you want to start a journal lemme know, and I'll give you an invite code.

The fanfic comunities are a lot of fun. :)

I see no need for the concern on losing credibility for anything you want to write. Just write under separate names.

I'm published and I still write fanfiction.

You can post it here under the Celeb category.
It just may not get a lot of reads or votes.

Cool

It's not a concern just a question. I will write what I want regardless of what people think. LOL

I just wondered if other serious writers do it and put it out for people to read?

I have posted a recent one I wrote on here, it is still pending because I just did it 3 days ago.

If you write fanfic may I ask about what? You know mine. =)

I also use the images of these men (in my head only of course) as one of my characters in my regular fiction.

Does anyone else do that?

I have old and new pics of some of my favorite male actors as well as Duran and write a story based on the pic.

LOL Psychotic indeed.

I might have a celebrity in mind when I write a character, but I don't write fanfic.

In my teens, I wrote fiction about what happened after the ending credits of "the Rocky Horror show" ;)

Since then I've written a bit of POTC fic, and read a lot more-- Jack Sparrow is a very cool archetype and I love seeing the different ways people re-write him.

Like SR71plt, I might have someone in mind when I write, but I don't write about that person. I know that celebs have placed themselves out there, and don't really have any cause to complain about their public's fantasies, but I just feel like it's disrespectful, if not to them, than to myself. Only once have I written celebfic that I just cannot "file the serial numbers off" of. I feel embarrassed that my writerly imagination went lacking on that one-- but the scenario is so odd and these two men were such singular persons...

But maybe I'll try to do so now. Because I still feel like I've invaded their privacy.

Back to masks. Or masques. Rhetorical question: Are you writing about the person or the persona?

Interesting

That is an interesting quote: "you feel like you've invaded their privacy."

Never thought of it that way. On the old DD Fic site, the owner claimed that the members actually knew about it and enjoyed that their fans had such creative imaginations.

That's what drew me into it.

Of course, I'm totally not into making myself part of the DD Slash fic, I only write it with them involved.

My latest idea will put me in but only as an observer. LOL

=)

I think it's more like you are letting them limit you. I don't like anything limiting me when I write (including my own preconceptions about where a story is going to go).

I think the personality/persona question is a good one. I've known a goodly number of international celebrities in various fields of endeavor, but I've met very few whose public persona was them backstage, in person.

So, which Rock Hudson would I write about, who, I can tell you, was pretty grab ass behind those cute scenes with Doris Day. (And Doris Day had a foul mouth, in her own dimension). :D

personality/persona... eh well, it's hard to say isn't it?

But when you are using someone's name, someone's description, someone's known history, someone's known friendships with other celebs-- plus their descriptions histories etc-- and then placing them in (for instance) a 60,000 word epic involving slavery, depilation, enemas, buggery, public whippping and blowjobs, and all the rest of the wonderful things a woman's imagination can wreak, all culminating in acceptance and embracing of slavery and yay for a master/slave HEA (Master also bearing a real person's name description etc.)...

That would be a line I personally don't want to cross. And the real names really got in the way of the very hot BDSM action IMO.

Mostly I ascribe it to lack of worldbuilding skills and a large dose of fannish entitlement.

It's all about the lust...

Links to old DD and more fanfic thoughts

The LJ website is this one:

http://community.livejournal.com/duran_stories/

The Main Duran FanFic is this one:

http://there.indyramp.com/

Both are no longer maintained, which sucks. Which is why I want to do my own.

I believe that as long as it is not personally hurting them its fair game. Of course I haven't put them in those situations you mentioned but...LOL

Mostly very loving situations romantic, sappy. LOL

The latest one involves two of them finding out that they always had feelings for one another after all these years while another has them involved in a sort of voyeur/exhibitionist scene. LOL

Yes I am a perv

The Lust

Yes it is.

Part of the reason I write Duran Fic is the lust I can create between them.

Of course the gents have always given us such beautiful pics to base our stories on...LOL ;P

Not only that, the lust that I feel for them! Woohoo...

Ok sorry went back to being a teen there...*sigh*
