I know that when you start to get paid for writing about trademarked and copywritten characters the people that own them tend to get angry and start feeling very lawsuity.

So any place that would advertise paying authors for writing about these characters would probably get in trouble.

I'm not saying definetively that one does not exist but that would be a big obstacle I imagine.

There might be a site somewhere that offers money prizes for original fiction but for fan fiction it is extremely unlikely.

It is illegal, at least in the States, to make profit from fanfiction. Your best bet is to rewrite the story as original fiction and cut out all mention of other people's persons or characters or settings. Cannibalizing fanfiction is a good way to get a strong start on an original work.

Any suggestions on where to start. how does stuff like this:

"Salvation: Book 3 (X-Men: Mutant Empire) by Christopher Golden (Mass Market Paperback - Jul 1998 "

Get published if it's "illegal" to write? What I'm aiming for is HOW to I get to do this?

Things like that, the owner of the copyright usually approaches an author and asks them to take the project (that's how the Crow series is done). VERY OCCASIONALLY you can write to the publishers of those types of stories and ask if they are interested- query letter, etc, just like a regular submission for a publisher. But something like what's on Lit? Not a chance.
