FALSE WITNESS by Dorothy Uhnak. 1981

I don't know whether to rate the book 1 star or 5 stars.

You wont find books like this today, because it gets in the pants of racial and sexual politics up to its elbow.

The story is simple: A seriously popular black tv star a la Oprah gets carved up inside her high security apartment by a white male. What he did was grisly.

While the world loves her she antagonizes the hell outta white people, and Jews particularly. Its fair to say she's black Muslim tho she aint picky about the men she sleeps with. She and the detective investigating the attack are old enemies. The detective is Jewish. But the star don't like blacks much, either.

The lead surgeon who puits her back together is the best. He's also Jewish. And the minute the star comes outta her coma she accuse the surgeon of chopping her up.

I haven't read the end so I don't know how it ends.

But the sexual/racial politics is raw and real. Every minority has a pity party, and all of them are hostile and treacherous.

Cant we all just get along!

I finished reading this book. The story is inexplicable, and the ending isn't a lot different from the beginning. The whole thing reminds me of a kaleidoscope where every bit of it stays the same but the entire construct changes when the tube is rotated. Viewpoints matter a lot.

I still cant rate it. Parts of it are sublime, parts of it made me wanna burn the book. The characters are as endearing and repulsive as all of us are.

My favorite part exposes ethnic groups and political groups as evil forces who play nice people for fools. My belief.

The book starts bad and ends bad. But what do you expect when people are so fucked up.
