Hell, the Underworld, Abyss, the realm of pain went by many names. And like any power structure, there were constant struggles for power within. It had always been this way since the beginning of time. The only constant that stayed the same was the overlord, The Prince of Lies.

However, this was not the current focus of the current tale. Bagnor was a lower class demon that would spend his time in tricking mortals into signing away their souls in exchange for anything they desired. He had fun seeing the many different ways he could trap them in the contracts, something he had never gotten tired of. However, lately he had gotten the urge to increase his standing with the ranks. This meant to try for something more challenging.

Angels were the enemy of demons, but also their favorite playtoy. Pretty much no angel had ever fallen for one of his contracts, but he always figured he just had to wait for the right opportunity to come along. He had no idea that he would be able to accomplish that little challenge to himself quite so soon.

-----

It was a quiet night that Bagnor chose to go soul searching. He didn't have any particular mortal in mind, since tonight was a lazy night for him. He had find a quiet place in Central Park, nestling his large bulk back against a large oak tree. His presence was masked by mask from the mortals who were enjoying their time in the park, mostly young couples. They did amuse him from time to time, as he often spent night just watching the silly creatures.

Malak or Mal as she preferred to be called stared after her charge in utter disbelief. Why was this her 1st mission? Aren't 1st missions supposed to be easy; a sort of transition to the real thing. Than why in everything holy was she given this little ... twerp. Yup, she did it. She thought of her charge as a twerp. Mal groaned. No, she's supposed to not ever think like that and ... "Gah!" Mal stomped her foot.

Mal was a warrior angel, but recently agreed to become a guardian angel. There wasn't anymore "warring" to be done and she had grown bored. But the world was running low on guardian angels and the mortals were losing their morals; so she agreed. Though technically this was her 1st mission she was over a few millennia years old and she should be able to handle one rambunctious, lying, cheating, stealing 16-year old.

Mal took a breath and changed into her human form; which was pretty much just folding her wings to her back. She sauntered into the park and saw her charge. "Kerry, what are you doing here in the park? I saw you across the street and came to say what's up..." Mal purposely trailed off as though she just realized Kerry was buying drugs.

"I thought you weren't going to do that shit anymore," Mal said slightly crossed, but mostly sad to Kerry. "You know how I feel about that. You make bad decisions when on that." And I need you to be clean and get on God's path, so I can be promoted to someone who really needs my help than a spoiled little brat. Mal kept her face neutral as she only thought the latter.

"Mal ..." Kerry said and she looked up at Mal with tears and shit love. "I knew you would show up. You always show up when I need you." Kerry smirked. "I will throw this shit on the ground and walk away if you ..." Kerry took a deep breath and Mal's heart pattered as she tried to think of anything to stop the inevitable. "If you love me."

"I do love you Kerry."

"No, like love love. It's not wrong. There's nothing wrong being gay. I love you and want us to be together forever. Why can't you love me," Kerry's voice caught and she was holding back tears. "Why doesn't anyone love me?"

No, I can't love you; because I'm an angel. I'm not allowed to have a physical relationship with any mortal. As soon as you are on the right path I will disappear and go to another person. This is why we can't be together. But Mal didn't say any of that. The mortals can't know she's an angel. Instead she closed her eyes and slowly opened them.

"Kerry, I just am not attracted to you like that please don't do this. There are lots of people who love you. You'll find your right soul." Mal looked around as though for help, but who?! She was supposed to be the help not the problem!

It wasn't long before Bagnor caught the scent of an angel near him. Well, there were many angels, the scent of rose and lavender to designate them as guardian angels. It didn't surprise him the park had it's share of angels here, mostly to watch over their charges to keep them from trouble. He smirked for a moment, knowing that pretty much most of them failed despite their best efforts. Even the most good-natured human had some flaw to get them into trouble of some sort.

No, the scent that he picked up was that of blood and steel. That scent was a very rare smell for an angel, one it had been years since he had smelled. He licked his lips for a moment and grinned. Perhaps it was time for the new hunt to begin.

He shifted from his position beneath the tree and began whistling softly. It was a jaunty upbeat tune, but no mortal could hear it. He had decided to not make himself known tonight, keeping his presence masked as he roamed after that intriguing scent. It wasn't long before he tracked down the owner of the scent.

He didn't hear the first part of the argument, but he did catch the last part about the young human finding another. He found teenagers the most interesting with their wild mood swings and ideas, often very amusing. As he stood a few feet away, he wasn't visible to Kerry or able to be heard. But he was quite certain that Mel would be able to.

"Tsk tsk. Puppy love. Why must it be abused so?"

Kerry was now crying and getting hysterical. Mal was doing her best to calm her down when the smell of ash and brimstone hit her. Mal straightened a bit and decades of training almost had her spread her wings and take to the air to find the source and attack. She had to take a breath and calm herself. There were no more wars. Demons got smart and stopped attacking the angels and heaven to prey on something a bit easier to win at - mortals.

Angels and Demons couldn't make decisions for mortals, but they could influence them..The battle was constant for the souls of the mortals and with present day time the demons were winning as more and more angels either got tired, lost trust in humans, or weren't getting through to the humans. It seemed it was easier for humans to choose the dark path than to stay righteous.

Mal had missed something vital Kerry had said apparently when Kerry just stared at her as if waiting for an answer. Mal simply shook her head gently while that smell got stronger; though it wasn't overpowering. Then she heard the deep rumble of words and she looked around alarmed. That voice had to be talking about them. Kerry stopped short and looked scared, "Mal what is it?"

"Kerry go home now! I'll come to you later and we'll talk more." Kerry hesitated and then walked away. Mal didn't miss that Kerry pocketed the drugs. "Kerry..." Mal started, but Kerry flipped her the bird and continued walking.

Mal simply stared until Kerry was gone and she was relatively alone. The smell of ash and brimstone didn't dissipate, something she was afraid of. "Are you hear for me or the girl," Mal said in angelic latin. The demon would be able to understand her.

He gave a laugh for a moment at her question, grinning softly. He knew he could either say straight what he wanted, but there was no fun in that. Instead, he wanted to play with the angel before grabbing her.

"Why is that everyone seemed to think that us demons are only after humans or angels nowadays? For all you know, I am just out enjoying this evening watching the antics of angels trying to save these puny humans."

He was quiet for a few moments as he walked around her, taking in her figure. She was quite the prize to have. Guardian angels were a dime a dozen, but getting one of the warrior class was the better prize.

"Actually I was just seeing what sort of trouble was going on, and it seems I hit the jackpot. It looks like you aren't handling the transition well from the war, Mal, was it? I've been bored lately and thought I might give a little help to smooth things along."

He stopped for a moment before turning and walking away as if he was going to leave her.

"Unless you think you can steer through this puppy love this human has. Very tricky business I've heard."

(by the way what does your character look like in Human form or does he always look like the demon pictured above).

Mal's back straightened as she was finally able to hone in on the demon. She looked around, but the park was now eerily void of any mortals. Mal's eyes narrowed as he laughed at her. Mal wasn't going to take the bait. Of course the demon was after humans or to kill her kind. What else would they want?! Mal might have been a bit biased.

Mal sucked in a breath. She didn't recognize this demon, but he knew her. Mal whipped back her hair pride turning her spine to steel (1st mistake). After millennias of killing demons she knew she had a reputation and she smiled coldly. "What is your name, I don't know who you are," she said arrogantly (2nd mistake).

Mal waved the demon away. "Of course I can handle this. I do not need help from your kind. I'm not stupid to fall for your trap. Demon!"

Mal walked away heading towards Kerry's house. The only issue was she wasn't sure how she was going to handle this. She knew this wasn't love. Kerry loved her yes, but as a best friend and Kerry didn't know how to identify the intense emotion as other than romantic love. Puppy love can grow into romantic love and Mal had to make sure this didn't happen with Kerry or 1. she failed her mission and would be demoted, 2. Mal would never be able to take on another charge, 3. she would be banned from the mortal realm for up to an eternity and 4. this was the worst depending on how bad she could be stripped of her angel-hood, her wings taken, and forced to live as a mortal. A fate Mal could not bear. No she'll fix this. She had to.

He smirked for a moment, stopping as she yelled at him for his name. He chuckled and looked back over his shoulder at her.

"My name...you don't deserve my name right now."

He laughed for a moment as she claimed to be able to handle this problem all on her own. It had seen something like this with other guardians, just another recurring problem. He didn't go far, but did turn around to watch her walk away. He chuckled as he spoke, though she was far enough away she wouldn't hear him.

"You'll come back to me soon enough. Begging just a tiny bit for help."

He hmmed for a moment as he tapped his chin with a claw for a moment. She was a worthy prize and not one to let get away. He needed to make it not so obvious that he was after her, just enough distance to follow after her.

He smiled for a moment before shifting into a more reasonable human looking form before heading in the same direction. He just happened to know of a nice little bar in the same direction, close to the same townhouses that the angel was heading towards.

Mal was done with the demon. Probably some low-level not even worth the steel on her blade out just harassing mortals. He probably plants stupid suggestions in their ears and the weak might fall prey to his idiocracy, but not her. No, Mal was a battle hard war angel. Mal sighed no, she's a guardian angel now.

Mal pushed the demon out of her mind as she tried to figure out humans. They have changed so much and yet not at all at the same time. She still didn't understand their emotions or how their minds could be so easily swayed and yet at the same time so stubborn. They didn't make sense. Mal sniffed and shook her head. She couldn't get that damn demon scent out of her nose. She swear she could still smell him.

Mal stopped at a pretty house and stared at it. A little girl came to the window and waved. Mal waved back and the little girl smiled before making a face at her. Mal's eyes misted. The girl giggled and then her head turned as though she was talking to someone off to her left. She pointed towards Mal. Mal ducked behind a tree and glanced at the window to see a man look frantically out the window. He rushed away from the window and Mal was already walking down the street where conveniently a bus had just stopped. She was getting on it when she heard, "Shylah-" but then he cut himself off from saying her full name.

The bus pulled off and Mal saw the little girl standing next to her father as he looked around staring after the woman his daughter claimed to have seen. They never glanced at the bus as it passed. Mal slumped down ... all angels were Malaks. It literally meant meant Angel, so if an angel gave you their name it would be Malak Lucifer (for example before he fallen) or Malak Michael, but only Mal went by Mal. She had only given her name to one person.

Mal closed her eyes as the bus continued out of the good part of town and into the more shadier side. She had to focus on her charge. What was she going to do?

Since he was invisible to the mortals, there was really no reason for him to walk all the way to the bar. He had walked to the open gates of the park when he decided to move along a little more quickly to his destination by flying. It would have been easier to just teleport there, but it was a nice night out. He really didn't have any true place to be.

He actually just hovered along the ground rather than actually flying. He had to play a little dodge the pedestrians and cars, but he was enjoying himself. It wasn't long before he caught up with the bus that Mal was on, although he didn't know that as her scent was masked inside the vehicle. He soon passed it as the bus made it's final stop of the night just a couple of blocks from the bar he was going into.

The bar was a little hole in the wall biker bar, but it was currently empty minus the barkeep. Shifting back to visible, the demon stood outside the doorway before pushing open the door. The bar owner looked up from reading his newspaper behind the counter, taking a moment to see who had walked in. He gave a little grin seeing Bagnor, or Mark as he had made humans refer to him while he was in human form.

"I'll have your usual in a moment."

Bagnor smiled as he sat down at the bar. "Sounds good. The place seems a little empty, slow night?"

The bar owner nodded for a moment as he made the white russian for Bagnor, who decided to step outside for a moment.

"I'll be back in a moment. Just need a bit of a smoke."

The demon moved back outside, standing beneath the streetlight at the corner of the block a few feet from the bar. As he lit a cigarette, he noticed that the bus was still sitting at the last stop of the night. He did find it odd that the driver was still there, since it usually didn't stay long. He smiled a little as the wind shifted in his direction, carrying the familiar scent of the angel he had hounded earlier. It made him wonder exactly what brought an angel to the seedier part of the city.
