Fake Accents

I'm actually getting to the point where I can pick out a Tennessee vs. Mississippi vs. Georgia accent.... and I've never been to any of those places. :D

Sorry, but I had to say it.....
I love the concept that there is an 'American Accent.' How many states are there? Or even how many regions?
It's like saying there's one accent for all of Europe and one for all of the UK and one for all of Asia (with it's half a million different languages). I've seen how offended British people get when mistaken for Australians, and that's oceans away.
I know damn well there's 50 bizilion different accents just in London...As there are different accents between Philly, Pittsburg, and Northern Back country PA. (Sorry, lived there and don't have enough experiance to use the state I now live it.)

I remember the first movie in which I ever saw Gary Oldman. he played an attorney in a film called 'Criminal Law' which also stared Kevin Bacon.

A couple of years later, I found out Oldman is English. I had no idea. he had managed to sound completely American, and more than that, New England American, in 'Criminal Law.'

That's a hell of a movie, by the way ;)

On the other side of the coin, there are a few American actors that are excellent when it comes to faking accents. Johnny Depp and Robert Downey, Jr., to name a couple.

But I have to admit . . . even without it being a run-of-the-mill Hollywood sap story film, 'Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves,' was completely ruined by Costner's deplorable attempts to sound English.

Apologies if any of my comments echoed anything previously stated. It's too late to read through the whole thread :D

When I lived in London, my wife (who was a Brit) would sometimes have to translate for me between the irish, the Cockneys, the West Enders, and so forth, even though we all, technically, spoke English.

Don't ask me how many times I was asked 'do you have a horse?' once Cherry or I told them I was from Texas . . .

Dear lord, just think of the Welsh. No one understands them, even the people from a couple miles away in other parts of the UK. ;)
(Sorry Zade, but you know it's true.)

Wales really should be it's own country. I never felt more conspicuous as an American.

If I remember rightly, you didn't seem to have any problems

It is. We have our own government, culture, traditions and language that bears NO relation to English. Is it any wonder we sound a little different?

No one from overseas ever 'gets' that Wales isn't just an extension of England.

A western PA accent is very distinctive. It's almost identical to a West Virginia accent. I have been told many times that I have a Philadelphia accent.

Well I understood my sister's baby talk better than our own mother too.

Besides, anything you say is sexy.

I stand -- or sit, as the case may be -- suitably chastised. We only went there once, and Cherry and I never talked about the incident ;)

If you hadn't written the second line I swear to God I would have landed one on you for that.

Sensitive topic, guys. Let it drop. :rose:

I love Zade's accent and she is perfectly comprehensible... think she may have anglicised her accent a wee bit for my sake though...

I think they get rather heavy with the long I sound too. (Says the girl from the Carolinas)

True, stretched long 'I' is primarily something I associate with Carolina almost exclusively. Really put the drawn out in their drawl. *smile* I loved the fact that my college football team had three syllables to their name. (Go Bay-yer-sss!)

Hey Cardiff has one of the best stadiums in the world - The Millenium Stadium and I was so close to visiting that place to witness the classic F.A. Cup final last year.

Besides, what's that gotta do with accents? Actors do what they're told and yes, sometimes its good and sometimes its bad. But does that mean they're offending us? Hell no! To those who find it offensive, please put yourselves in the actors' shoes. They need to make a living.

Tom Hanks, in the movie called 'The Terminal', faked an accent and he was really good. I don't think anyone got offended with that.
