Facebook - the politics of unfriending

I am learning more and more as people post about current events that I have people as Facebook friends who I'd never be friends with anymore. A few are high school friends who are such religious wackos that we would not get along if they really knew me, and based on what they post I do not care to really know them. A few are former coworkers.

Deleting or unfriending them seems rude. I have unfriended a person in the past who sent me frantic messages wanting to know why I unfriended her. Geez, right?

Is this difficult for anyone else here?

This has me reflecting on something Matt Lauer said on the pilot episode of Kimmy Schmidt: "I'm always amazed at what women will do because they're afraid of being rude." Yeah.

I have zero friends because I insist on being me. And I unfriend or iggy idiots with no hesitation. Its so liberating to not fuss with imbeciles.

It's easy enough to unfollow someone without actually unfriending them. In this way if they're, say, an old high-school friend who you might see at reunion but you otherwise don't want to hear their latest pearls of wisdom about Obama or get their latest brilliant Christian facebook meme, you can still drop in on their feed.

Only time I think I've actually unfriended someone is when I go through my friends list and find people there I can't remember ever having met or spoken to before.

I rarely use Facebook. I keep in touch with my friends through calls or instant chats. I'm not interested in whose dog stopped pooping or who's changing their baby's diaper or who's leading a thug life. No, thank you.

I usually log in to show that I'm still alive. Other than that, I've grown off it.

This is the most retarded thing I've ever heard. Whoooooo gives a shit? If the person you are unfriending is upset, so what? The person is retarded, that's why you're unfriending them. So big deal if they're offended, right? You don't like them anyway. And you're not being mean to them. Sooooo, just unfriend them.

You can always do the "unfollow" thing where you don't see their stupid posts anymore.

I saw, grow a set of ovaries and just unfriend the fuckers. And stop being so damned greedy with the boobs.

I'm running into it now but with people I actually normally enjoy interacting with. The blatant racism is really hard for me to stomach so I think I need to just unfriend, not just unfollow. I'm starting to view it as a public service.

It's genuinely useful for keeping track of birthdays I otherwise would never remember, keeping up with the local events schedule and getting informed about people's deaths and marriages. I've also occasionally had old friends and exes use it to get in touch (or in other words FB has helped get me some action from time to time), and I have to use it for work, so I can't entirely ditch it. But of course 98% of what's on there is useless to me.

I had one former friend who kept forwarding these weird-ass misogynistic articles about that #GamerGate bullshit. Him I unfriended. Thankfully thus far he's the only one.

Yeah, that. But now I use my Smartphone's calender for the important dates. Almost all of my friends know that I don't use Facebook, so if it's a major news, they call/text me personally if I was important enough.

I have my personal number pasted on my profile. You want to get in touch, you call or text. Or wait for two months for me to log in and then get in touch.

Still, I don't think people need to ditch Facebook in its entirety. Functions like the ones you mentioned above are still indispensable. Yeah, 98% is just BS, but that 2% is what pulls me back.

I haven't been on FB in weeks. I never understand why people bother asking to be my friend, since I so rarely post and when I do it is usually angry and political. Perhaps they imagine that the true me they know is a front, and that my friendly, outgoing self will somehow emerge in the happy environs of the Facebook asylum. But if anything the fluffiness makes me more angry, not less.

I have something around 150 'friends', all of whom requested it. Perhaps they are masochists.

Wow.

What life must be like for anyone who gives a crap, let alone a thought...

...about such totally meaningless sh!t.

I appreciate the different perspectives here. I think, like wings suggests, that I do want to unfriend rather than unfollow. Something like making a point of it. I'm just avoiding the repercussions...which is silly, actually.

Fuck em!

IDK why people friend a bunch of people they don't like anyhow....I never understood that.

"Oh but I know that person!" Who cares? They are assholes...fuck em!

Charming.

I agree with the folks who said just u friend them if they're no longer friends. If someone even bothers to try and figure out who's in friended them......you've really done the right thing.

I'm generally very careful with whom I'll accept a friend request in the first place. Never a stranger, and almost always more than a casual acquaintance.

I'm also very tolerant of others views. I have friends with very strong political views that are the opposite of mine. I see them post stuff I completely disagree with, and I go off on them! Just kidding. I silently shake my head and judge them. That's all. Lol. Differing views are fine.

However, relentless requests for stupid games, and I will drop you after fair warning. I also stopped following someone who posted way to much and filled my feed with ridiculous crap. Not bad enough to unfriend, just stop following so she is not in my feed.

^^^^^friends all with dark skin who want to fuck his ass.

Generally I just blocked people I no longer wanted to communicate with via Facebook, but eventually it just became a site where people were either posting baby pictures or annoying articles, so I just deleted it altogether. I love not having to check on it.

This. Why'd you friend them in the first place?

I hate the old high school friend requests. I've deleted one chicks requests FOUR times! Finally I blocked her from seeing me or sending me that friending crap. How could someone not get a clue?

I unfollowed one close friend who I actually do like because every fucking day she posts about birds. WTF with all that bird shit?

And all the inspirational crap...the kids' grandma is still on unfollow. I don't have to read her but she still gets my wonderful updates. :D
