Kabul airport was hit by an explosion on Thursday, throwing evacuation efforts into more turmoil ahead of President Joe Biden's fast-approaching deadline for all U.S. forces to withdraw from the country.

“We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport,” Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said on Twitter.

"Casualties are unclear at this time. We will provide additional details when we can,” Kirby said.

Fox News reported shortly after the news broke of the explosion that reports indicate at least three American military members were injured in the attack. The attack also reportedly prompted rapid gunfire exchanges which may be ongoing at press time.

Journalists from the region have begun sharing images allegedly of the immediate aftermath of the explosion. Local reports indicate the explosion occurred in a densely populated part of the airport, potentially causing a large number of casualties.

The Afghan broadcaster 1TV News published photos of civilians using wheelbarrows to tend to the injured and people fleeing the scene covered in blood.

People have been killed and Marines have been wounded. There may be more Americans hurt. The plan was for the Turks to leave last because they are a Muslim force with responsibility to cover the American withdrawal. Turns out their pulling out now. The word from a Ranger working with people trying to get out is the fighters firing on the airport now are foreign fighters speaking Arabic and Chinese. He says the attack is highly coordinated and those fighters are directing their fire into the airfield and at refugees and Americans in the open. Admiral Kirby just announced a "number" of American casualties.
