i was going to ask this later tonite.. and last night.. but i keep forgetting to... so i'll ask it now

why does bottled water have an expiration date on it? if it's water, shouldnt it be good forever?

*sits and ponders this question* I have absolutely no idea. I never even noticed an expiration date on bottled water. I'd probably drink it even if it was expired.

It's "good" forever, it just isn't fresh.

Water goes stale. Icky icky stale water.

That's why I like my wine, thank you very much! *waves*

Hello Willing!

*hugs back* Indeed it has!

Hope everything's going good for you. No more sleepless nights now that your Expired Water Q is answered, I hope. ;)

nope... not really anymore sleepless nights... but i'd say that's cuz of how i've been welcoming some of the newbies.. dont know if you were around when i started doing that... but Morden, Texan, and Gleam all got welcomed in rather nice ways :p

Hey willing.....have enough in you to welcome one more newbie?

sure do... but you have to keep your virgin status till later this evening... i'll be back around 9 cdt tonite to welcome someone... maybe two someones tonite :p

as for now... i have to go.. someone needs the phone around here... so i'll see y'all later

Sounds good to me. Thats what I like.....a girl with goals.

If you notice they also have a nutritional profile. I can understand the expiration date (sort of) but a nutritional profile? That is stupid!

The reason is fairly simple - and it deals with commerce.

The FDA regulates the quality and safety of bottled water and has neither set nor suggested any limitation to the shelf life of bottled water.

Most bottled water containers that you find at the grocery store bear a two-year expiration date. This just acts as a lot number and is for stock rotation purposes (FIFO - first in first out)

It does not mean the product is substandard or 'bad' after that date. Bottled water is good indefinitely if stored appropriately (meaning unopened in a cool, dry place away from odors and toxic substances) and refrigerated after opening.

Of course this depends on the bottling operation as well - as long as there were no contaminants at the filling stage, and the seal is not tampered with, then the contents remain safe.

And if it doesn't specify a natural spring, lake or other source it probably IS tap water with a fancy 'designer' label and all you are paying for is the brand name.

Lil, the reason for the nutritional info is because, since it is considered a 'food product' is it subject to regulatory laws which include labeling. Even though there is usually nothing in plain water that could be considered an allergen, several companies are marketing 'flavored waters' or beverages that contain added ingredients, some of which could pose problems for people.

Where I live, it is not uncommon for the tapwater to have a certain "texture" at times.

Here, bottled water is the rule rather than the exception. (End of the line and the pipes are constantly being "worked on" The city comes and dumps the fire hydrant every 3 or 4 months a few houses down--it takes about 2 hours each time to flush the sludge out. It is interresting to see the color variations in that spew. Makes me thirsty and aching to see the Ozarka guy.)

...stagnant water?...

Noooo, I make a point of avoiding that kind of thing. :D

When I was stationed in the UK, however, we used nothing but bottled water. I wouldn't even brush my teeth with water from the tap.

I was down in Mexico for Spring Break this year. Everyone told me not to drink the water, but I did. I was fine, except the airline lost my luggage on the way back...boy was that a pain.

Wine...

Hello Willing!

I agree with Licci. Wine is the way to go. But for some reason, where I live, they say to drink like 4 glasses a day of water... figures. :)

Funny...

...the travel guides in Spain suggest not drinking the water in America or eating fresh fruit or vegetables. (Ditto for the UK except they also add that you should have private health insurance because the medical care is considered sub-standard)
