Exercise

Interesting and very IMPORTANT topic, IMO.

There isn't a "one size fits all" solution. What I never thought that I would do, I'm doing and loving at 70. (No it isn't related to sex (another story).

In my opinion it is IMPORTANT that we exercise, throughout our lives.

water polo looks fun;

holy hell is it a lot of work. its been a very long time since i tried, it just a little.

Need to find a workout you like.

Crossfit, weights, cycle etc. Join a gym and go to the classes

As I see it you have 2 choices.

1) Surrender to obesity and lethargy. You'll have lots of company. Most Americans die from 'lifestyle' diseases which are the result of poor health choices. Poor diet and lack of exercise. Join the crowd! Be a couch potato, if that's what you want. Die young and fat. That's what you're choosing by default, when you choose not to eat well and be fit.

2) Change your attitude and your behavior. Make a concious choice to be fit and to eat healthy.

It's a simple as that. Now make your choice.

I've found that just going for walks is a great and easy way to get started. Try and find someone to go with you or get some great music. I started this past winter/spring with walking and now I'm back to running again (I haven't done that since before my 9 y/o was born) and also added in doing some light lifting for toning with a trainer, yoga and eating better (more veggies, no processed or fast food). I've lost about 15lbs and it hasn't seemed like much effort at all. My increased confidence and sex drive have been added bonuses. ;)

I'm qualified for fitness and nutrition and I'd be happy to help out anybody who has questions about it :)

The mr and I worked out a plan, he runs i blow. We also have a mow and blow policy....

It might sound silly but it worked for me and I actually love doing it everyday.

My son got me the Nintendo Wii for Christmas and it has boxing and tennis that is actually a very good cardio workout and it's fun to do plus you get to beat the hell out of something. LOL All that punching is really good for your abs.

Like the others have said here, find something you like to do and you'll do it without dreading it.
I too have taken up many things with Wii. Mostly the Wii dance stuff but many other activities also.

give some thought to eliminating sugar from your diet. doing that helped me drop 25 lbs.

ed

This helped me a ton. I cut carbs and sugar and have lost 60 pounds in the last year. Stevia took a while to get used to, but I don't mind it at all now.

Good luck. ;)

My question: will you come and run right in front of me...with your shirt off?

;)

I am a fitness instructor if anyone needs help and run weightloss support groups.

For working out you gotta find something you enjoy. Start with gym classes. They are great and will meet a lot of great people in them too.

Zombies, Run!

If you enjoy zombie fiction at all an have an android or iPhone I would suggest the Zombies, Run! app. It's almost like an audio book that you are the main character of. It makes you want to get out and run the next mission just to hear what happens next.
I've done the longest runs of my life using it. It's definately a bonus if you live near a cemetery and like to run when it's getting dark.

I always find it interesting when someone says they don't like to exercise. I think people often flashback to their elementary school phys ed classes and shudder at the idea of subjecting themselves to that voluntarily.

But, as others have said, it's about find what you like. Me, I was on the track team in h.s. and college. Loved the challenge of it and the shiny medals a trophies.

I still run competitively but now I add variety to keep myself engaged. Sometimes, I'm all about kettlebells, then I was into boxing and kickboxing. Recently, I started taking a class that utilizes a type of samurari sword.

So, it's about keeping it interesting and challenging yourself physically. The possibilities are just myriad, even outside the gym.

The Zombie Run app looks like it could be fun. However, I doubt I'll do more than watch the trailer video.

Im not particularly motivated by or fond of groups of people. Teams and the like are not my bag. I think those people have a disorder. (I do acknowledge that its me with the disorder, humans are social/team creatures)

Aeons ago, I could knock out 200 sit ups (not crunchs) in 2 minutes. I didnt enjoy or practice it, it just happened to be something I could do. I only did em for H.S. R.O.T.C.

I tried H.S. wrestling, lasted a little over a month. A month after that the pain went away. Holy hell those guys are in good shape.

10 years in the military (team exercise again), never found a way to 'like' or 'enjoy' it. A good year was 1 hour every six months dedicated to PT.

Now at nearly 40, 100 over my boot camp weight, a bad knee, low T (treating), functionally obsolete thyroid (treating), and a poor attitude (how do you treat that? idk.)... I dont think just 'deciding to do it' is gonna take root.

Trainers / coaches / assistants, my natural response is obscenity.

Trading sex for exercise, I got no T... Im always turning it down as it is. (a good problem to have)

Im holding out for a targeted stroke.

I hate exercise. It sucks. I don't understand how people can just go to the gym (which I affectionately call the gime) just to lift weights. Like, I get it if you go there to look good or feel good or to lose weight. But my god, to do there because it's fun???? I've never heard of such. Or never understood it.

With that said, I go to the gime about 3 times a week to play racquetball. It's excellent exercise and it keeps me from being a tub of goo. Plus, I totally kick arse. But for me a sport that is just a lot of fun is the only way to get me to exercise. I'm not going to pick up weights. Those fuckers are heavy. I'm not gonna do the treadie, as that's boring as fuck. But playing a game based on skill, precision and finesse? Count me in.

Is it totally out of the question to find a sport you like? Racquetball is nice because it's at most four people, more often just two.

Congratulations on finding a game you like to play.

my 'sport' of choice was skateboarding. so basically active standing :/ in a manner that is hard on the knees.

wouldnt mind biking, but were all hills and valleys here in appalachia, no bike lanes either.

Have you tried boxing? As someone who busted her knees, boxing isn't too hard on your knees. You definitely get your cardio pumping and it's soothing. It's also very solitary. Plus, let's face it, you get a lot of anger and frustration out :D

I did a bit of boxing and let me tell you, while at the time the only exercise I got was climbing the catwalks, I really did enjoy punching the bag with a good, competent trainer. It released so much frustration.

It also got me back on the exercise routine. Just a thought.

We are all different. I looked for the optimal exercise for years and never really found one that I wouldn't get bored with and quit. I've been doing one to two hours of "Trail Running" for more than a year now on the most aggressive and beautiful trails I can find. I have not even considered stopping. The most difficult part is taking a rest day off.

Here's the thing

If you don't enjoy it because you don't like the work, nothing outside of a near-death experience is going to help.

If you can find an activity or sport that doesn't feel like exercise, the way playing soccer isn't running on a treadmill for 40 minutes, you'll have some success.

There's nothing we can say or do to help.

It's on you, brother. Good luck!

1) Cut carbs. Way back. No junk food (it's okay to indulge on special occasions but this should be minimal) Only whole grains and not even much of those.
2) Boost volume of non-starchy veggies, fresh fruits, and lean/moderate-fat proteins. Eat a balance of those, as much as you want. They fill you up while carbs leave you hungry. For snacks, eat your favorite fresh fruits. Buy the good stuff, since you are denying yourself junk food. The best apples, fresh cherries, fresh pineapple, whatever you like.
3) lift weights 2-3 times a week. One set of a basic circuit is enough if you do each set to muscle exhaustion, and it takes about 20 minutes. muscle mass boosts metabolism and burns calories while resting.
4) for weight: diet and metabolism are more important than exercise, but exercise will speed up weight loss if you have a good diet. To make it more interesting, listen to music, get an audiobook, or choose a stationary exercise where you can watch a movie or TV show. Bringing a smartphone or tablet to a gym, coupled with a Netflix subscription, is what entertains me while on a bike or elliptical.

I hate it too, but found if I just add a little more movement in it helped. I park my car a little farther, I walk down to collect my mail instead of driving by...that kind of thing. I also heard not long ago that intense 5 min heart rate increases are very beneficial. When I watch tv, I jump on my stationary bike during the commercial. It isn't much, but it is better than nothing. I also agree with the wii..**** stuff.

Like someone said, make it fun. I can't exercise without music. I always have to have my iPhone with me with music playing. It can pump you up and give you extra motivation. Try to take the pain from exercising and try to turn it into something good. You know the saying, no pain no gain. If you're feeling a workout, you are doing yourself some good. I know lots of fitness websites tell you to jog a certain distance or for a certain amount of time to make a difference, but don't listen to those. You don't go from zero to one hundred. Make those things something to build up to. For now, just try and get a decent work out, for however long that takes. Like I said, if you are feeling a workout YOU ARE DOING YOURSELF GOOD, even if you aren't meeting some arbitrary target.

The other important thing is diet. Many people don't realize how drinking a lot of water is very good for your metabolism. Drink a ton of water, as it will help a ton. Obviously you want to avoid soft drinks and only endulge in them once in a while if you enjoy it. You also should try to avoid alcohol quite a bit. I don't know how much you drink, if any at all, but over drinking is very bad. I only drink once a week and I don't drink more than 2or 3 in one night.

I think I'm pretty fit and those are the big ones for me. Obviously there are more things you can do for your diet, but I have a high metabolism already, so I don't have to worry about that much. Maybe you will, but there are plenty of sources you can learn on that from.

Your first paragraph is worth gold. Follow SexyAlison's guidence and you will change your life. She has made it soooooo easy. It took me 70 years to come to similar conclusions. Take advantage of this advice.
