So who was first to report his phone had a gay dating app? The stories of hidden romances seemed to blossom from there.

And why create this narrative? Who would benefit?

It is possible that Mateen might have had communications on cellphones or other electronic equipment that have not been recovered by investigators in the wake of the shooting.

i'd expect him to have used a different phone that he wiped then disposed of prior to the premeditated attack. it's not the sort of evidence he'd wish to come out given his claimed affiliations.

Some of those who have claimed to be in contact with Mateen before the shooting continue to insist that the gunman seen in the photos released after the shooting is the same man who visited the nightclub before the shooting.

Kevin West, 29, a Navy veteran and Pulse regular, said Mateen messaged him on Jack’d and also said he recognized him entering the club on the night of the shooting. After the attack, West turned his phone and app passwords over to police and FBI investigators. He said Mateen didn’t reveal his name, but he recognized him from the photo Mateen had posted on the app, which matched one of the gunman released after the shooting.

On Thursday, he dismissed federal investigators’ doubts.

“No one is lying about him being on there,” West said of the gay apps, adding that “once you have the app and delete your profile, it’s gone.”

West said the focus should be on keeping guns out of the hands of potentially violent people.

I actually took a screen shot on my phone of the the news explosion on the closeted gay rage angle because I knew I was looking at bullshit at the time.

It blew up very quickly; the media promoted that story wholeheartedly because that would mean we don't have to pay attention to the Islam angle.

I found it fascinating to be able to watch an obvious bullshit narrative brew and explode so quickly from start to finish. I also found it fascinating how so many people truly wanted to believe that the closeted gay rage angle was true. And in fact, I am sure that most people who believed it before will still believe it today and will come up with excuses for the lack of evidence, so score one for this bit of media manipulation.

Occam's razor.

The simplest explanation is most likely the correct one. Some gays either wanted to be in the limelight or genuinely thought from the picture that he was the same guy that they actually did meet or were approached by and made a mistake.

Fort Meade has everyone's communications backed up. There is no erasing anything. The FBI can and did follow his movements using cell phone tracking retroactively. They know where he was and where he was not for any window of time.

The FBI has no idea right now which restaurants I ate at this week and whose cell phone was within direct proximity of my cell phone at what time but only because there's no reason for them to look through the reams of data to figure that out on me. They did so for Mateen

Each person who claimed to have possibly interacted with Mateen has been eliminated. All are either lying or simply mistaken. Which is not at all unusual when you have any major event.

For him to have left absolutely no trace of any of these contacts would require for him to leave his cellphone behind every time he hooked up with or even communicated with someone else and go to a completely different location using a completely different burner phone which was always off when he was using the other phone.

Even if he had done all that there would be these huge gaps in the record. That would be noteworthy.

Cue Gimpy's conspiracy theory thread. Also see the article that Laurel linked as to why it is we all want to believe something that's not likely simply because it fits what we want to believe or makes us feel important because we've noticed something.

Even the article shows this tendency to cling to unlikely explanations. Suggesting the possibility of unlikely events with absolutely no evidence to suggest that such things happened is bad journalism.

When you are an Islamist, you are told to blend, to lie, and to violate Sharia in order not to draw attention to yourself. Especially when you consider the fact that her political views already make her stupid to 85% of the board (and it only gets worse when she opens her mouth) and spidey's political views (if he ever actually articulated them in some form other than a question) makes him smart according to 85% of the board.
