Wrong. The check is not cursory, it goes through NCIC which contains the criminal records of everyone who is convicted of a felony, any violent misdemeanor, has an order of protection against them, or any other legal action that would disqualify them from owning firearms.

That being said the system is not perfect. People enter the data and errors are made all the time. Sometimes information is not sent to the FBI on a timely manner. Other times people with similar names are confused in the system and denied a purchase.

Explain the gun show loopholes.

I agree he was a terrorist. I think his religion is what put him in a mindset that he had to do this to "go out" a jihadist instead of being an outed gay Muslim.

The guy had a history of obvious mental problems and anger issues. The gun show loophole is a misnomer.

Background checks are conducted by all licensed dealers for every sale of a firearm, new or used. It doesn't matter if the sale is at a gun show, in a store, or over the internet. The background check is required by law.

What they are really talking about at gun shows is that I can go in a gun show as a person (I don't have an FFL) and sell any weapon I legally own, to anyone I want, without doing a background check.

The same is true if I sell the same gun to a friend, neighbor, co worker, classmate, relative, or someone on craigslist.

The liberal media and anti gun politicians call it the gun show loophole to demonize gun shows and make it seem like the background check is not required at guns shows. This is misleading and a way for them to drum up support from people who are ignorant about the subject.

Only FFL (Federal Firearms License) holders (those who sell guns as a business) are required to do background checks. No individual who wants to sell a gun is required to do one anywhere. Be it a gun show, in their home, at their church, or in a McDonalds parking lot.

That's the gun show loophole. There has never been a mass shooting that was traced back to a private sale at a gun show.

Penalties for not conducting a background check include loss of the FFL, fines and jail time. No legitimate FFL holder will risk their livelihood by not doing a check. Look up how many FFL's are revoked for not doing background checks. Very few are, and mostly newer dealers who made a mistake.

I don't have to verify if someone has a DL or insurance if I sell them a car. Why should I have to run a background check to sell my gun to my dad or my son or my friend or anyone else?

What most folks appear to be arguing about is what influenced his conduct more: his religion or his apparent gay self-loathing. You could argue it either way, it doesn't make his victims any less dead.

Again, agreed. But he was involved in the gay community for years with no obvious issues requiring him to go all jihadi. He was a "regular". Pulse wasn't the only place he had gone either. Something happened to spark this all of a sudden. Someone spurned him, embarrassed him, or threatened to out him to people he couldn't live with knowing. What prompted it? Maybe the wife knows? Maybe a cleric found out and told him he had to do it for forgiveness? Something other than "homos bad" caused this event to occur.
