Everytime We Say Goodbye -Ella Fitzgerald

Everytime we say goodbye, I die a little,
Everytime we say goodbye, I wonder why a little,
Why the Gods above me, who must be in the know.
Think so little of me, they allow you to go.
When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to
minor,
Everytime we say goodbye.

When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to
minor,
Everytime we say goodbye.

Her beautiful voice just soothes something in my soul.

Peggy Lee (requiescat in Pace) :
"I bought a Dress to Please you.... I wore it yesterday..."

And highly contemporary, Norah Jones "I don't know why (I didn't come)"

On the Jazz side, (Big Bands) it is pretty hard to beat "Tuxedo Junction".

At Last - Etta James

At last
my love has come along
my lonely days over
and life is like a song

At last
the skies above are blue
well my heart was wrapped up in clover
the night I looked at you

I found a dream
that I could speak to
a dream that I could call my own
I found a thrill
to press my cheek to
a thrill that I have never known

well

You smile
you smile
oh and then the spell was cast
and here we are in heaven
for you are mine at last

I found a dream
that I could speak to
a dream that I
could call my own
I found a thrill
to press my cheek to
a thrill that I have never known

well

You smile
you smile
oh and then the spell was cast
and here we are in heaven
for you are mine at last

ooo yea
you are mine
you are mine
at last
at last
at last
at last

This has to be one of the best songs ever.

I'll be sure to do that KS, lol you're too cute.

Norah Jones rocks, April.

The Nearness Of You and Cold Cold Heart are amazing as well. :)

I Want Some Sugar In My Bowl - Nina Simone

I want some sugar in my bowl
I want a little sweetness
down in my soul
I could stand some lovin' Oh so bad
Feel so lonely and I feel so sad
I want a little steam on my clothes
Maybe I could fix things up so they'll go
Whatsa matter Daddy
Come on, save my soul
Drop a little sugar in my bowl
I ain't foolin'
Drop a little sugar in my bowl
Well I want a little sugar in my bowl
Well I want a little sweetness down in my soul
You been acting strangely I've been told
Move me daddy
I want some sugar in my bowl
I want a little steam on my clothes
Maybe I can fix things up so they'll go
Whatsa matter Daddy
Come on save my soul
Drop a little sugar in my bowl
I ain't foolin
Drop some sugar- yeah- in my bowl.

Now you have an idea why I say sugar a lot, KS ;-)

Dream A Little Dream Of Me - Louis Armstrong

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Birds singin' in the sycamore trees
Dream a little dream of me

Say nighty-night and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longin' to linger till dawn dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

(instrumental break)

Stars shining up above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Birds singin' in the sycamore trees
Dream a little dream of me

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

Yes, dream a little dream of me

*sigh*

What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The colours of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shakin' hands, sayin' "How do you do?"
They're really saying "I love you"

I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll ever know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Oh yeah

...Don't say goodbye...we've only just met and have not even flirted yet...

...Early Tom Waits is amazing stuff...

Re: Re: Every Time We Say Goodbye

..Dream a little dream and wonderful world are great songs...

My Baby Just Cares - Nina Simone

My baby don't care for shows
My baby don't care for clothes
My baby just cares for me
My baby don't care for cars and races
My baby don't care for high-tone places

Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Lana Turner's smile
Is somethin' he can't see
My baby don't care who knows
My baby just cares for me

Baby, my baby don't care for shows
And he don't even care for clothes
He cares for me
My baby don't care
For cars and races
My baby don't care for
He don't care for high-tone places

Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Liberace's smile
Is something he can't see
Is something he can't see
I wonder what's wrong with baby
My baby just cares for
My baby just cares for
My baby just cares for me

She's just wonderful.....

Great selections. I saw Ella about twenty years ago, absolutely wonderful. I love "American Standards" of the '30s, '40s and '50s. Just about anything by the Gershwins is S'wonderful. And can't not mention Lady Day herself, Billie Holiday.

Shoot The Moon - Norah Jones

The summer days are gone too soon
You shoot the moon
And miss completely
And now you're left to face the gloom
The empty room that once smelled sweetly
Of all the flowers you plucked if only
You knew the reason
Why you had to each be lonely
Was it just the season?

Now the fall is here again
You can't begin to give in
It's all over

When the snows come rolling through
You're rolling too with some new lover
Will you think of times you've told me
That you knew the reason
Why we had to each be lonely
It was just the season

Come Away With Me - Norah Jones

Come away with me in the night
Come away with me
And I will write you a song

Come away with me on a bus
Come away where they can't tempt us
With their lies

I want to walk with you
On a cloudy day
In fields where the yellow grass grows knee-high
So won't you try to come

Come away with me and we'll kiss
On a mountaintop
Come away with me
And I'll never stop loving you

And I want to wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof
While I'm safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night
Come away with me

Emi that's cheating.

Oh, please--not to belittle that great tune, but I have not heard many big band cuts that even approach Benny Goodman's rendition of 'Sing Sing Sing' at Carnegie Hall!

Anyone know the lyrics to 'I've Got the World on a String?'

As it so happens, yes!

How could this thread exist without me showing up somewhere? ;)

"I've got the world on a string
Sitting on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life - I'm in love
I've got a song that I sing
I can make the rain go
Any time I move my finger
Lucky me, can't you see - I'm in love

Life's a wonderful thing
As long as I hold the string
I'd be a silly so-and-so
If I should ever let her go

[Repeat Chorus]"

This is the Sinatra cut.

Thanks!

The only rendition I have is by the Duke Ellington Orchestra--no vocals! Nice tune.

For female jazz singers, I have to go with Ella, Diana Krall, and Norah Jones (and I'm proud to have been either the first or second person to mention her on the GB!). Susan Tedeschi gets my vote for female blues singers, but the veterans like Bonnie Raitt and Koko Taylor always win big with me.

Among the male jazz singers, no one tops Sinatra. He's up there by a mile and a half. He's also my go-to music when I just need to find my center again.

I've tried very hard to model my singing style (in jazz at least) after Sinatra and David Clayton Thomas - one for sheer style and ease and the other for focus and power. The Etta James performance os "At Last", though, gets my vote for the most goose-bump raising performance I've ever heard.

Instrumental stuff is different for me. I don't have one favorite and you can hand me nearly any of the classic big bands and I'll be amazingly happy but you could also toss in Maynard Ferguson or Buddy Rich to those artists. I agree also that the Benny performance of "Sing, Sing, Sing" may be the finest swing tune I've ever heard or played. It is solid energy and intensity from beginning to end.

Go this very minute to www.secondspin.com and order any of the Frank Sinatra Greatest Hits collections with that song on it. You will not regret doing so for a single second.

Go now. We'll wait. This is important!!
