As a child growing up, my uncles used to take me all the time to the A&W Restaurants in Minnesota. We would go and get hot dogs, fries and Root Beer Floats. Then afterwards goto the Drive In movies with fresh Root Beer and Popcorn.....anyone ever been to one? Or have a similar thing that you used to do like that? A&W Restaurants are in decline and what a shame, the stuff you get in the can is not the same as straight out of the tap.......those were the days.......

Dog and Suds

Never been to an A&W but in Indiana I found a wonderful little chain called "Dog & Suds" that served hot dogs and root beer in a car-hop type setting. We braved snow to get root beer some nights. They also sold root beer in 3 liter bottles, but it's not the same.

Now I'm back in FL and I'd kill for a good draft of suds ;-)

Yes, I did. I am still a sucker for a good root beer float, and have been known to drive all the way to Yucaipa to get one. A little trip of about 60 miles, one way . . .

Oh, yeah

Yes, we have an A&W here. Only one in the state. Still has car hops, usually on rollerblades. Those car window trays, the frosty mugs for rootbeer. Fantastic onion rings.

Only bad thing is, it's only open in the summer.

They also have one day a week where you go in your vintage car, and get a free meal. It's sponsored by a local oldies radio station.

It is a very popular restaurant here, and we feel lucky to have it.

Oh I would love to be able to be near one.......

I would love to be able to drive 60 miles one way for a good ole Root Beer float from an A&W and some hot dogs and fresh root beer. Love that stuff, the cans they sell in the store just are not the same. I love the hops and all on rollerblades/skates and the car window trays......maybe it is just the essence of the era......

We have Sonic, in NC, which is the same type idea, but not the same at all. The last time I went to a real A&W was whilst last visiting my uncles in Minnesota two years ago....as soon as I got off the plane I said "To the A&W we are going right?" and they complied........made my trip all the better. I even brought a jug of the stuff home on the return plane flight.

MP, don't know what they have in Florida. Surely they have something? Maybe there is and you just have not found it.

The A&W in my home town was THE place to hang out. Well one of two -- The Sportsman Cafe had indoor seating and a jukebox.

Do the one's in Minnesota offer "Swampwater" or is that concoction unique to A&W locations in the pacific Northwest?

Swampwater must be a concoction only offered in the Pacific Northwest.........what is it WH?

Half A&W root beer, half A&W Orange soda. Served in a frosty mug so cold that it forms slush on the sides of the mug. When you stir the slush away from the sides of the mug, it forms streamers of "slime" that make look like it could have been dipped straight from the swamp out back.

Looks disgusting, tastes great!

Sounds good to me, I never pay attention to the Menu board though, I get the same thing almost every time I get a chance to goto A&W Root Beer

You know, I don't remember whether it was ever on the menu. It was just the 'in thing' to order when I was in high school. (back in the dark ages)

As a kid....

I grew up in the East end of London and near by was a pie and mash shop, but not any old pie and mash shop, "THE" best pie and mash shop in the world. I would go on a saturday with my sister's and have pie, mash and liquor ( a type of green sauce not alcohol ) and my sister would have jellied eel's.
We moved when I was nine years old to another part of London where the pie and mash shop's sucked, when at seventeen I got my full motorcycle licence one of the first thing's I did was ride over to my old home turf and have some, the shop is over a hundred years old and they have pictures taken from about 1903 that show the shop open for action.

I know this is not the same as hotdogs and root beer but ask most Londoner's about pie and mash shop's and they will either love them or hate them there's no half way.

This summer when I goto Minnesota for a visit (cousins wedding) I will try one.........thanks for the turn on to something "new and different" WH.

I still goto Columbia SC alot just to get a taste of some good ole fashioned BBQ, I just love this little place down there that has quite become a good place to eat. So I can relate to what you are saying OUTSIDER. And that was the intent of the thread. Maybe not exactly the same thing, i.e. root beer and hot dogs, but the same type thing.

I would kill for an A&W Root Beer Float and Hot dog right now, I think I am having DT's. I am so looking forward to going there this summer and eating/drinking to my hearts content of Root Beer and Hot Dogs....

Oh, No. The Devil's brew (aka Swampwater) was for AFTER the dancing. A little something to provide the energy replenishment needed to recover from the exertion of dancing and fortify one's self for the 'parking' to come.

Had one till recently

They closed it down, I have no clue why. It was a 5 minutes walk for me to get my Rootbeer.. sucks :(

The good ole days...yes, I remember the A&W...we had one right down the street from here for the longest time...now it's a car lot. Go figure!

I was wondering how long it would take you to respond Sammyjo, that is too bad. Arghhhhh....

Passionnee, I feel your pain. We used to have a "A&W" in the mall at least but it closed........even though it was not the same, it was at least close.

Speaking of parking....

I don't suppose anyone knows if the Varsity in Atlanta is still open??

Man...what I'd give for slice of peach pie....

Where is Juliangel when you need her? *Juliangel where art thou?*

Come on over for a visit and we'll gorge on rootbeer and coney dogs...

We have a A&W type place here in town. It started as a regular A&W car hop style restaurant, then they began adding new things to the menu, like Spanish Dogs (coney dog with a better sauce) and homemade root beer. Just recently they opened a real indoor restaurant with tables and all to use during the winter, but they still have the regular car hops during the summer cause eating in your car is just better, somehow.

A&W, Yes we had one in our town for about four years.

I loved the large frosted mugs of rootbeer. I don't remember
anything about a swamp drink.

However as i had my mind between my girlfriend's legs all
the time back in those days anything is possible. I've got a grin on my face now.!

Yes I have been to one and we actually have one not too far from us. Thanks for the dinner idea.

Anyone want a doggy bag?

sorry to go a little off the subject but as your nearly all Americans on this thread and board for that matter can you tell me how rare are drive in cinema's in the US these day's.
I've always wanted to go to one but we've never had them here in the UK.
