it hasn't got a name yet but anyone can tune into satellite broadcasts of US and NATO spy planes and receive the same pictures as Military Headquarters.

At the bottom of the screen there's information regarding the height, location and speed of the aircraft. And as the images are received in real time any war criminal or terrorist can check if there is a spy plane in the area before venturing out of doors.

The authorities at first said that the information was of low classiification, then they said it was a serious threat to our forces out there. But they still haven't rectified the problem.

Seems that information from the spy planes are being transmitted unnecrypted to a commercial satellite where it is beamed out all over Europe.

We've been watching, fascinated as lorries back into park bays, people walk down the street and I swear I saw bin Laden hiding behind a rock...

:D

I am.

The news broke here about a week ago and I expected someone on Lit to pick up on it. As I haven't seen anything here I can only assume the news has been suppressed or hidden on the back pages in the States.

Only last night the news programs showed us new images which had been beamed down yesterday.

Fascinating as they are (you can see allied troop movements going from street to street) they should have been stopped by now.

:)

This is indeed true, they even get the satellite feed in south america. the defense department should sell some advertising.

My god what idiioots(to borrow from Ren&Stimpy).

I haven't seen any of this and I spend a lot of time reading/watching news stuff. I guess if it was far enough back i would miss it but you would think someone would have seen it.

If you give it a 128 bit encryption it is unbreakable or it least it should be to just about everyone.

But the images are also being transmitted by a commercial satellite, then sent on via commercial channels. To make the information 100% safe wouldn't it have to be transmitted by a military one?

:)

You would think so.

128 bit is the standard commercial encryption. Some commercial satelites can do that but not all. Your browser probably uses 128 bit encryption if it is a newer one.

Everything is made by the lowest bidder.
The most qualified people for the job work in the civilian world.
Half of all research funds are diverted for classified stuff.

But that's okay. The biggest intel failure belonged to the Navy from 1969 to 1985. This will be taken care of quickly cause we know about it.

Even though the news only broke earlier this week, it did so because the Brit who first noticed these transmissions had already tried to tell the authorities about them.

I'm not sure but I think that was a couple of months ago.

When he received no co-operation from the military he made the information public.

Now of course it's big news...

The side scandal is why didn't the authorities immediately close down the commercial channels?

:)

I saw that as well has a couple of hacks into the computers lately. Which brings up something I have been talking about and comes from Charles R. Smith's columns and that is the Chinese and thier cyberwar efforts. Thier plans on Taiwan include a massive hack and an attempt to bring down the net and other computer networks, especially ones the military relies on.

The fact that we are using commercial satellites also points to the more than decade-long malaise towards the military and defense in a world where, due to victory, we have become the number one target.

The Chinese, on the other hand, are betting on space and directing tons of resources to the effort of not reaching space, but controlling space.

They are attempting the greatest flanking manuever in the history on mankind...

It is funny and I wonder if it was done on purpose. I've been watching the clips on a WEB site. They're recoding the stuff and putting it up as streaming video.

They're going to start encrypting it next week, but why bother?

What're the specs? Frequency, polarization, etc. What sat. is it coming from?

Basically, where can I see it?
