European Tourism to the US in Jeopardy

This is what the UK is seeing. A British tourist crossing from US into Canada is imprisoned then deported for minor bureaucracy.
Expect a severe drop in UK tourism with immediate effect, followed by a Europe-wide slump.

A Welsh backpacker detained in the US has arrived back in the UK, her father has confirmed.

Becky Burke, 28, had been held in a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing centre for 19 days after being denied entry at the US-Canada border.

Her father Paul Burke, from Portskewett, Monmouthshire, told BBC Wales that his daughter had been reunited with family and friends at Heathrow Airport earlier.

Becky Burke was detained halfway through a "trip of a lifetime" backpacking across North America. The artist had spent time with a number of families helping with household chores in return for accommodation.

At the end of February, Ms Burke travelled to Seattle with plans to go to Vancouver in Canada to stay with another family. Paul Burke said his daughter was, however, denied entry by the Canadian authorities, who told her she needed to go back to the US, where she was then detained at the Northwest detention centre in Tacoma, Washington.

Speaking to the BBC from inside the ICE centre, Ms Burke described the conditions as "horrendous".

"Unfortunately, due to an incorrect visa, she was denied entry into Canada," said Ms Burke's father Paul Burke. "When she tried to return to the US she was refused re-entry and classified as an 'illegal alien'. Despite being a tourist with no criminal record she was handcuffed and taken to a detention facility in Tacoma, Washington.”

Mr Burke said of the conditions his daughter was being kept in last week: "Becky’s current conditions are deeply concerning. She is sharing a cell, surviving on a diet of cold rice, potatoes, and beans (she is vegan), and has limited access to phone calls. Visitors are restricted to speaking through a glass screen via telephone. All her possessions have been confiscated and she feels isolated and desperate to come home.” He added: "What was meant to be a life-changing four-month backpacking trip across North America has turned into a nightmare."

The German foreign ministry has updated its travel advice for Germans travelling to the US after three German nationals were denied entry and detained as they tried to enter.

"The Federal Foreign Office is aware of three cases in which German citizens were unable to enter the United States and were placed in deportation detention upon entry," a foreign ministry spokesperson said.


Among those detained was Fabian Schmidt, 34, a legal permanent US resident. According to US outlet WGBH, he was detained at an airport in Boston before being transferred to a detention facility in Rhode Island.

Schmidt's mother, Astrid Senior, claimed in an interview that her son was "violently interrogated" at the airport before being stripped naked and forced into a cold shower by two officials.

The two other nationals affected were Jessica Brösche, a 29-year-old tattoo artist from Berlin, and Lucas Sielaff, 25, from Saxony-Anhalt. Both have since been sent back to Germany.

Brösche had attempted to enter the US from Tijuana in Mexico while travelling with her friend, a US citizen.

According to the online fundraiser set up to fund her return, authorities originally told her she would be detained for several days, but that what ensued instead was an "alarming sequence of events" with Brösche transferred and kept at the Otay Mesa Detention centre for more than six weeks.

Brösche's friends alleged she was put in solitary confinement for nine days during her ordeal.

According to ABC 10News, San Diego CoreCivic, the company that owns the detention centre where Brösche was held, denied those claims.

Sielaff returned to Germany in early March after two weeks in detention his girlfriend, Lennon Tyler, told Swiss daily Tages-Anzeiger. He had entered the US on a tourist visa and visited Mexico for a short trip.

Its not flailing and most of the issues are caused by capitalism. Socialism saved them. I don't know if its really working for China but I don't hate China have success anyway. It has been great for American Agriculture which probably wouldn't exist without this.

Megacorps are a problem. But if you don't like socialism you don't have a choice on mega corps so I accept I can't win this battle.
