Spoken word events are popping up all over, but the erotic poetry venues seem a little harder to find. If anyone knows of any erotic poetry slams, open mics, what have you, and they're in the NYC area, "spit" it out and let me know!

Come on; there's got to be a poetry event out there...holler back, somebody!

If there is one...

I can't find it. I googled New York City and poetry slam, trying to find this info and came up empty handed. In fact, I can't find info about "erotic" poetry slams anywhere, though I've no doubt that erotic poetry is heard at these events.

You might want to try talking to someone from the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in NYC. If anyone can answer your query, it's them.

Good luck and happy slamming

Thanks, Angeline! If that doesn't help, maybe I'll just have to create my own event...!

Interesting

My experience in Las Vegas has been you can do erotic poetry at open mike poetry readings, and those poems generally are pretty popular with the crowd, but I don't know of any events devoted just to erotic poetry. At one coffeehouse (now closed), we did once have an "offensive" poetry night, which was fun.

Offensive poetry?! What kind of poetry is that? Can any poetry really be offensive?

Good question. I don't consider any poetry "offensive," although of course there is some poetry I don't like. The impetus for the event was one local poet read a poem entitled "America Stop Niggering Me to Death," which some people found offensive. In fact, he was stopped half-way through reading the poem, and the reading shut down! The poem was actually anti-racist, but used the word "nigger" repeatedly, so some people misunderstood it and thought it was racist.

I agree. I've read a lot of shitty poetry (not trying to say that none of my poems aren't) but I don't think I've ever found any poetry to be offensive. As for the poem you describe, it's a shame that no one let the poet speak his piece in its entirety. Personally, I think that poetry is an artistic expression, therefore it cannot be "wrong". How can someone's creative expression be judged objectively? I don't think it can. But then we get ourselves into the controversy about freedom of expression:rolleyes: And it's still early in the evening, damnit!:)
