Entering the Wilderness

I don't know, babe...I think that you start thinking about those raucous seagulls and wistful sunsets, and before long, you'll be imagining a pair of tanned bodies entwined on the beach, the sand sticking to their wet skin as the fingers of the tide ebb and flow around them...
Have you met England's coast? :ROFLMAO: The only tanned people here emerge from sunbeds. All the rest are lobster-pink

Almost correct. The women are lobster or white but the men have great tans down to their necks, then they're kinda translucent. Hold an English person to the light and you can see all their veins.

Actually, the exception are builders who have great all-over tans but skin cancer.

Vest Tan is Best Tan! Suns Out Guns Out!

etc etc.

Obviously Irish, but I don't recognize it. My first Internet search hasn't found anything relevant yet, but I may have missed something.
Search for "Utica Club Beer" AND "Jonathan Winters"

It's an Upstate Thing

I usually feel either relieved and hopeful for the next story or burned out and frustrated. Either way I’m glad to have the story out of my head.

Malcolm X (now he was a long time ago) had this great tongue-in-cheek bit about how white people want to get darker. I believe he mentions a product that existed back than called Man-Tan. That was when he was in his most militant phase.

And, I believe, Michael Jackson appeared in adverts for a skin lotion called 'Ethnic Cleansing'.

Good try, except you made up yours while mine is real. And true, it does both ways, although light to dark is still more common than dark to light.

I'd noticed that many New Yorkers go in for that healthy, outdoor orange look.

You must not frequent the parts of New York that I know best. Almost everyone in my neighborhood is Black (which includes African-Americans, people from the West Indies - Jamaicans, Haitians. etc., - recent immigrants from Africa, and others); Latino, which includes everybody with ancestry from Mexico to Argentina; and what I would approximate as "Islamic," with connections to places from Morocco to Afghanistan.

That's only part of the complexity. In any case, their skin tone can be just about anything. Few of them have that healthy, outdoor orange look.
