Emigration !!!!!!

Bull!

In the midwest the Brits are treated very well. I have friends who began as nannies and stayed on. I think it's the accent, since we lack one totally (unless speaking slowly and sparsely can be considered an accent).

Where I live, we even tolorate the French since they were some of the first here and half of the state bears French or Indian names.

We even welcome the Mexicans.

Did I mention the sizeable Chinese community?

And Arabic/Muslim?

You must have us mistaken for the deep south or something.

I live in the state that started the civil war (tee hee)!

The nice thing about Kansas City is that it's centrally located to the rest of the US so there is a relative ease of visiting the whole thing. It also has an international airport.

I would recommend that they relocate to a suburb of a metropolitan area that has an international airport.

Ask them what sort of climate and scenery they want to live with. KC is great, but it's flat, brown most of the year, and it's best landscape feature is a large, muddy, brown river that's slowly filling with silt.

The other bad thing about KC is that AJ lives about an hour or two from it, depending on where he wallows in his liquor.

What do they like to do in their spare time? What sort of outdoor things do they enjoy? What sort of indoor things do they like? How much do the like fine dining? Kick off your shoes and make yourself at home cuisine? Operas, symphonies, museums? Hiking? Fishing? Hunting? Yes, in America you can own guns and keep them at your house even. How do they feel about traffic and inherent problems with it? Do they prefer to commute to work in public transportation? What kind of scenery do they want? We have all different kinds here. Canada is full of beautiful and varied scenery. It's no fun to live in Pheonix if you hate the desert. Likewise moving to Portland or Seattle when all you want to do is get away from London's fog is a bad idea. Do they want to pursue higher education for themselves? What kind of social climate and school do they want their children to be in? Which country, of the ones they're looking at, has the easiest return home for the holidays rates and travel? How alien do they want their new culture to feel to them? Canada feels more homey to Brits, I would think, since it's whole governmental system is so similar, but you'd have to ask a Brit.

Another clue, there are American military bases in England. Theres one in Cheltenham that a friend of mine will be heading to in about a month. It's a Navy base. There they can get to know a lot of Americans and some non-American sailors from all over the country. That's one of the best ways to actually learn about Americans other than taking a trip.

KM you've given me a whole lotta info there woman.....I think the best thing I can do is direct my sis to view this thread again and have a good think about it, but my sis is a smart cookie and I know she doesn't rush her decision's and if she's talking now about emigration she's had a long long loooong think about all it involves first.

I think she'll use the info we give her here wisely, after all it's not just her but her hubby and two daughters so I know she ain't gonna do nothing without looking twice.

KC is not flat and brown

It is hilly, green for all the usual seasons and where two major rivers meet along with several minor rivers. Johnson County is one of the most affluent counties in the nation. Now out where KM is, it does start to turn brown. But it's the end of November, we still have had no hard freeze, my grass is green, the mums are blooming, and we still have dandelions in the yard.

AJ out.

I think their really after the midsize town thing, they'v lived their whole lives in London which is a huge place and as crowded as buggery so I think part of the change their looking for is to get away from large cities, don't forget the other thing they were thinking about if they couldn't go out of the country was to move out into the UK countryside and take slower way of life up.

I don't like bumping my own threads like this all the time but I really want to catch the weekday evening crew....so...sorry :)
