Iowa Senator Joni Ernst is having a very bad year.
So bad, in fact, that she's said "fuck this" and will not run for re-election in 2026.
Formal announcement next week.
Her re-election fundraising campaign was clicking on all cylinders until she hit a very large "bump in the road" after Trump was elected.
She publicly mused that perhaps, just perhaps, an alcoholic Fox News weekend anchor wouldn't be the best choice for Secretary of Defense.
Magats, naturally, shit their collective britches, because WITH Ernst's vote, JD Vance breaks the tie as VP. WITHOUT Ernst's vote, Pete Kegsbreath would still be on Fox News Sunday.
Ernst rolled her eyes, pinched her nose and voted for Hegseth.
But MAGA, like Bob Seger's Rock and Roll, never forgets.
They immediately started whispering "primary her! primary her! She's not ONE OF US!" for her apostasy.
Then came strike two: at a townhall meeting in May, Ernst defended Medicaid cuts to white people. MAGA was upset, they thought they voted for a candidate to cut Medicaid from brown and black people only. "Medicaid cuts are gonna kill me! I'm gonna die!" one histrionic woman publicly wailed. Ernst just shrugged her shoulders and replied tone-deafeningly "Everybody is gonna die sometime".
THIS did not sit well with ANYONE in Iowa.
So Ernst doubled down, filmed a not-apology in a creepy as hell Iowa graveyard saying she was just doing what Jesus Christ wanted, to spread the "good news" of a heavenly reward ahead, facillitated and sped up by President Trump!
Her ratings plummeted to Trumpian levels.
Finally, the special election last week that flipped a +10 Trump district to a +7 Democratic pickup showed Ernst that the writing was on the wall.
So she is in the process of "Operation One Final Grift" and is expected to announce she is not running for re-election next Wednesday.
Good.
Fucking.
