Okay, one more music poll.

Who made a bigger influence on the way rock music is shaped today? Elton or David Bowie?

I am curious.

I vote Elton. I will give reasons later.

David Bowie...

Elton John had a large influence on "soft" rock or pop, and that shouldn't be over looked, but Bowie had a stronger influence on mainstream rock and roll; he expanded on what rock could be.

Plus, how much of "Elton's" contribution to rock actually Bernie Taupin's(Or whatever his name is) He certainly hasn't been all that important since they stopped writing together.

Musically, I go for the bald poofter any time of the day.

Only Bowie song I like is ''Under Pressure'' and it's Fredie's. Bowie suck except ''Merry X-mas, Mr. Lorence'' and he wasn't the good part either.

Bowie!!!

How many times have you heard artist today say what was one of thier influences ... You will hear Bowie mentioned more times than Elton John.

He is a multi tallented artist. Singer, Song Writer, Actor & Painter. Ok ... only one movie was a major hit for him ... Who has not seen Labyrinth!

Note: his other movies ... Absolute Beginners; Basquiat; B.U.S.T.E.D.; A Dog's Tale; Hunger; Labyrinth; Last Temptation of Christ; The Man Who Fell to Earth; Merry X-mas Mr Lawerance; Mr Rice; Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me; Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders From Mars.

The ones that are in Italic's I have watched.

Bowie.

I own Elton John albums (yes, real albums) but not a one by Bowie. I voted Elton John. I still dislike Bowie, just like the last time this argument came up.

This wasn't about what you like or dislike, or what albums you own but about which has had a greater impact on rock n roll. Pay attention! ;)

I did. Obviously, anything I like and have paid money for has had more influence on rock n roll than something I don't listen to or own. :p

Yes, of course. It's just Cheyenne's World and we're all bit players.

Putting Cheyenne's fine and entirely logical rationale aside ;) , I'd say Bowie. Bowie was inventive and took risks.

Elton John didn't do anything challenging from a musical perspective. He was better known for his outfits and glasss than his music.

Well, it's about time you finally understood that. :p

also elton didnt write his own songs i mean he has a good voice but a voice doesn't make you influential

David Bowie, of course.

(another film left off the list above, The Linguini Incident with
Roseanne Arquette)

He also played The Elephant Man on Broadway.

This thread got me in the mood for some Bowie today... Hope the neighbors don't mind listening listening this morning too... Woohoo, Let's Dance @ 400 watts on a Sunday morning... :D

Just some random thoughts:

Bowie has had more influence on pushing musical boundaries, Elton John has has more influence on pop.

Taupin writes the lyrics, Elton John writes the music. They still work together occassionally.

Neither has had as much influence as many others - like Buddy Holly, Elvis, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, just about everybody who ever wrote anything for Motown, all the people who influenced the Motown folks, etc.

Elton John brought Ziggy Stardust a little closer to the mainstream.

When my parents brought an 8 track of Aladdin Sane back from a trip to England they told me to throw it out if it had a lot of drug references in it - what do you think my reaction to that was?

Bowie...

I like millieteases' 'random thought' (but thoughtful) summary, closely paralleling mine. :D

EJ (and Bernie Taupin) were hugely influential in developing and keeping (still) the limelight on Pop as a significant, important mainstream music genre.

But, I don't think EJ's and BT's direct influence on Rock 'n Roll can be considered as profound as Bowie's (as well as others too numerous to mention here).

No contest this thread--the question, therefore, was an easy one to answer for me.

Tommy VS Labyrinth

As much as I enjoyed seeing Tommy when it was first released back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and giving Elton John his due for his excellent performance in that film, Jim Henson's Labyrinth will always stand out in my mind with David Bowie's triumph as the Goblin King.....
