I don't usually comment on news stories like this. Generally, they're nothing more than sensationalized diversions from the real news (which often goes unreported). But this story has some very interesting aspects I just can't resist delving into.

First, the alleged "abductor" of Elizabeth Smart hasn't been charged with anything yet. That in itself is highly revealing. I also just saw a CNN news crawl saying she could have escaped, but didn't. Doesn't sound like an abduction, does it? Also, there's a news article on Netscape (and no doubt many other sites) where her dad claims she was "brainwashed" by her alleged "abductor."

From these little snippets, it is possible to piece together what is likely the real story. Elizabeth Smart's family is a repressive gang of Bible-thumping Mormon bigots and hypocrites, who made her life miserable. She ran away and took up with her "abductor," a drifter with whom she found love and happiness for the first time in her life. Now she is back in the clutches of her family, probably being subjected to all the torments of hell.

Good question. Last I heard, that one's still unsolved-- but her parents are the main suspects.

Whether they did it or not, I think pushing a little girl to act grown-up, thus depriving her of a normal childhood (as they obviously did), is very, very wrong.
