Elie Wiesel has died.

"Whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation, take sides."

"Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."

Brilliant man.

"Elie Wiesel, writer, survivor of Auschwitz and Nobel Peace Prize winner, came to see [ Condeleeza ] Rice on February 27 [ 2003 ] and the president dropped by her office. Rice moved to the couch so the president could take the chair closest to Wiesel.

Wiesel told the president that Iraq was a terrorist state and that the moral imperative was for intervention. If the West had intervened in Europe in 1938, he said, World War II and the Holocaust could have been prevented. 'It's a moral issue. In the name of morality how can we not intervene?...'

... In the face of such evils, neutrality is impossible, Wiesel said."

-Bob Woodward
Plan of Attack
New York, New York 2004.

"So may I speak to you, Mr. President, with respect and admiration, of the events that happened. We have met four or five times, and each time I came away enriched, for I know of your commitment to humanity. And, therefore, I am convinced, as you have told us earlier when we spoke that you were not aware of the presence of SS graves in the Bitburg cemetery. Of course, you didn't know. But now we all are aware. May I, Mr. President, if it's possible at all, implore you to do something else, to find a way, to find another way, another site. That place, Mr. President, is not your place. Your place is with the victims of the SS." - Elie Wiesel, being far more forgiving than necessary of Ronald Reagan, April 19. 1985

Which is why he never took the side of the Palestinians nor condemned Israeli actions which continue to make the Palestinians suffer and endure humiliation.

Indeed. He didn't like Slavs much either. Or leftists. Or Arabs.

Maybe the guy who lived through death camps was biased. Oh me oh my. What an imperfect human being. Maybe he thought continuing to live while being Jewish was the only cause he worried about.

If you're going to start an organization dedicated to working for human rights, you don't pick and choose which humans get which rights.

That he remained vehemently silent while Israel used many of the same laws and tactics against Palestinians as were used against the Jews speaks volumes.

So do you support Israel when their human rights are abused? Where are you standing up for the right of people you disagree with? Where are the Israels right?

Ah yes, and there we go. A country which has the unequivocal and complete support of the most powerful nation on the planet, a nation which with impunity subjugates others then tries to claim they are the victims, a nation which routinely attacks its neighbors claiming the right of self-defense even though those neighbors have not attacked it, I'm supposed to bend over backwards for and absolve them of all their crimes.

Just because I disagree with people doesn't mean I don't give them the same rights as others. I disagree with China and its human rights violations but they have every right to exist as any other country. I simply choose to not buy products made in their country and will point out their violations at every opportunity.

The same with Israel. They have every right to exist. But when they claim victim status despite being the bully on the block, when they have two sets of laws, one for its people and one for those under occupation, when they do not mete out the same punishment for equal crimes, that is what I have a problem with.

For a people who like to make sure no one forgets how much they've suffered, it's amazing how much they go out of their way to do unto others that which was done unto them. Then complain when people call them out on it.

P.S. Remember the USS Liberty. June 8, 1967

I guess you missed the part where I asked if Israel was justified doing anything they have done. Reacting to bombings, innocents being killed.

This may be a chicken or egg thing. Who owns the land that someone owned 1500 years ago.

Do you really think one party is justified for all the killing they do? Palestinians OK. Jews bad.

Going back to the original topic. Wiesel was just a bad guy because he never said out loud he agrees with your cause? Maybe his own death camp experience prevented that.

He made a good living from it.

He went to Auschwitz and left alive. That's stunning all by itself. Not many did. But almost all of them wrote memoirs of Auschwitz. I think there are more memoirs than survivors.

'Israel' is the invader, the colonist, the occupier and the aggressor.

There is no equivalency between the aggressor and the victims. There is no chicken/egg conundrum. There is no equality of force or blame.

Damn Jews. You got me. They are the only ones blowing up stuff and people. Nods head.:( And they just damn deserve it.

I believe his stay was at Buchenwald, although I doubt it's pointless to quibble over which Nazi camp he stayed in. After all, all internment camps were dedicated to eradiating Jews and all other groups Hitler decided shouldn't live.

On tv they said Auschwitz. I recall he was a Nazi hunter for much of his life. That's missed in the present celebration. I don't dispute the horrors of the Holocaust or Hitler's pathology, what I argue for is accuracy with the facts. Himmler closed and concealed a lot of Auschwitz before the Russians got there in January 1945. Many of the survivors perished at the end. Numbers vary for how many escaped death at Auschwitz, but it wasn't many. That said, those few people produced many of the memoirs. And the bogus memoirs stick out from the real ones, because their claims are inconsistent with the real reports. That is, the horrors happened at the wrong times and places.

Are you saying Wiesel was bogus?
