I think it's the fact that the mouse is white against the earth. I suspect that a natural colored mouse would be ignored.

I don't see it so much as a fear of mice , but rather a size thing. "Look how small and puny it is. I wonder if it's catching???"

One of the best Mythbusters ever. Everyone's so amazed. And I don't think it's the whiteness of the mouse. The sand color of that road there isn't that dark that the white mouse stands out that much.
