A handgun in the backpack of a Minneapolis elementary school student accidentally went off as classes were about to end for the day Tuesday, according to district officials.

The student was standing outside Bethune Community School, on the grounds of the North Side school, when the gun discharged about 3 p.m., some 10 minutes before the end of the school day. No one was injured.

The student's identity was not released. The child's parents were present for interviews with police, both at the school and at the police station, Hicks said.

The incident remained under investigation by Minneapolis police late Tuesday.

There are no metal detectors in any of the district's schools, Hicks said.

Mary McLeod Bethune Community School serves 325 students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

people of all ages are fascinated by guns, and children carry glossy innocence. sometimes the lightest brush can lead to fire.

There's no such thing as an accidental discharge. They're negligent discharges.

Real guns are a lot more fun than pointing your finger and saying "Bang" and you can get into almost the same trouble either way.

do you hold gun owners legally responsible for all firings of their weapon?

The only defense against a bad boy with a gun, is a good boy with a gun.

The part I bolded makes me wonder. Why was he standing outside ten minutes before the school day ended?
