Electoral College

Kinda like there's ejaculation, and then there's EJACULATION.

Wait......let me consult my "Presidential Sex Dictionary"

What's quite embarrassing is I actually followed that convo...

Hell, let's all just do write in votes next election......I'm voting for Dennis Miller.......:p

If we got rid of the Electoral College not a single President or candidate for President would ever visit Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Hawaii, Alaska, etc. etc. and wouldn't have to give a damn about any concerns those state might have because he'd only need New York, Texas and California to elect him.

It's the United States of America, and the states have many of the same powers that countries do. If you want to keep the country united you have a representational voting system, not a popular one.

The fact that this system was created over 200 years (despite that fact that it was also created because it would take too long for candidates to get their platforms heard because of distance) shows, again, the amazing foresight and care that went into the formation of the country. Americans are seriously protective of the charter documents like the Constitution because they have served us so well.

Even now, with this truly bizarre situation in Florida, the laws laid out at the Philadelphia Convention two centuries ago have given us a road map on how to proceed. No one's guessing at what we should do here -- there are steps to be taken that we laid out long ago, and they're being taken.

The Electoral College is complicated, can take a long time, but is a measured and fair distribution of public will.

I voted for Gore not because he was the best man for the job, but the lesser of 2 evils. He has 1 thing Bush doesnt......common sense. Under a Bush administration, there would be guns in every corner, we would eventually have to wear oxygen tanks because of pollution, and young women, whether by accident, incest or rape would again be forced into dark alleys for abortions. All the while the upper class so to speak would be getting all the tax cuts, while the lower class starved, our mothers, fathers and grandparents would eventually not be able to have even the simple medicines they so desperatly needed to survive, because the Bush admin had cut social security, and had no health plan for the elderly.

I have to admit it, JC. You really had me going. You start off this thread with a sound, reasoned argument in favor of preserving the Electoral College and, regardless of where you stand on the issue, you state your point with eloquence and conviction. But then, halfway down the first page of the thread, out pops this little diatribe.

WTF? I feel like I'm watching the Exorcist and I've just seen Regan's head do a 360. You know, I've been amazed at the amount of this stuff that's cropped up the last few weeks - on this site and others. If it's not CreamyLady and Flamingo Blue worrying about the Supreme Court (look out, it's Orrin Hatch!), it's Laurel and a return to high deficits and back-alley abortions. Where in hell does this stuff come from?

Electoral College aside for the moment, does anyone truly believe that if Dubyah stood for any of those things he'd get within 20 million votes of the presidency, let alone two hundred thousand? I haven't seen such a tar and feathering of a candidate since Reagan. I had to check my ballot twice just to make sure I wasn't voting for Pat Buchanan - wait a minute, maybe I did. RECOUNT! I want a recount in Vermont!)

Even if Bush did want to outlow all abortions, put a handgun in every pot and appoint gibbering idiots to the Supreme Court (obviously I don't think he does), his two partners in crime (the Senate and the House) are so closely divided (regardless of who's in the majority) that getting any bill passed in the next 4 years will be like kicking a field goal from 60 yards. If it's not right down the middle, it ain't going through.

Why is it that people have to play to the lowest common denominator? Christ, we're coming off the best economy in the history of the country and the best that the democratic nominee can do is say, "Don't vote for him because he'll take away your right to an abortion"?

And while I'm on the subject, let me just thank the PTB for the 22nd amendment. If I had to put up with Bill Clinton running again, I might really end up voting for Pat Buchanan. Or moving to Canada. Bill Clinton is a reprehensible human being who doesn't deserve to be elected dog catcher. Hillary (who in my opinion is no better) should divorce him right after the next inauguration.

Then he can fuck all the bimbos he wants.

The Electoral College...

The Electoral College...

The Electoral College Is against the Premise of: "For the People, By the People"...It consists of nameless, faceless powerful entities who make the descisions in this country. They do it on every level and without any seeming Limitations...They decide Who we vote for, then tell us who we will Have to choose...Has anyone ever seen someone from the Electoral college? Can you name one of them? Are the members of the Electoral college anyone that has been part of an open Election? Or do they just appoint themselves? There really isn't any Human Being that is a part of this Institution after all is there? It's merely an idea on paper meant to sum up the votes of a given State. After all, with his brother as Gov. of Florida, I've gathered that with all of the Electoral votes to be had there, the needs of the actual Popular Vote would be secondary at best for George W. Bush...

I think Thumper has stated it best near the beginning of this thread...The Electoral College was designed for a New Country, circa late 1700's, and is outmoded and now shooting ourselves in the foot...

That was quite graceful jc-are you sure you voted Dem-last I heard, everyone who did has the intellect of a thirteen year old.
Really?

Wouldn't it be cool....

If Bush wins Florida and then on Jan 6th they open the Electoral ballots and find several votes flipped for Gore giving him the Presidency (actually only two would need to switch)

Just listen to the Republicans howl then...

It could happen and it would be legal...

You say if it was a popular vote that the candidates would only focus on the most populous states...

Isn't that what they do now since the most populous states have the most Electoral votes and all you need to get all of'em is a bare majority in each state....

Without Florida, Gore has far more Electoral votes than Bush and he only had a handful of states...why worry about North Dakota under the present system?

"A small number of persons, selected by their fellow citizens from the general mass, will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated investigations."

Specifically, the electors are people who are capable of analyzing the qualitites necessary for a specific position, in this instance, the President, and recognizing which candidate better demonstrates those qualities.

Elitist crap....I don't need someone deciding for me...

Thumper...

Please explaine to me, is the Electoral College an actual group of people?

Thumper...

Though Gore did win huge states, didn't he also lose a number of states due to Nader's integrity?
